Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset News Release

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is awarding two $2500 academic scholarships to two graduating seniors who live in West Maui, Hana or Molokai and attend a Maui or Molokai high school. The students should demonstrate superior academic abilities, involvement in school activities and a winning character profile and must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.

The scholarship highlights the club’s commitment to support the educational goals of local youth.

Produce Distributed to Residents in Need

Molokai Chamber of Commerce News Release

On Friday, April 10, with generous financial donations from our business community, the Support Molokai Initiative was able to purchase produce from Valley Isle Produce and have it flown on Mokulele Airlines and Kamaka Air to Molokai. It will be distributed to our kupuna and needy families by the Molokai Homestead Farmers Alliance and community volunteers.

The Support Molokai Initiative is a partnership between the Molokai Chamber of Commerce, Representative Lynn DeCoite, Molokai Community Federal Credit Union, Molokai Homestead Farmers Alliance, Molokai Farm Bureau, Bayer Hawaii and other volunteers to help our community through the COVID-19 pandemic with various relief efforts.…

Mokulele Grocery Delivery

Mokulele Airlines News Release

Last week, Mokulele Airlines announced it would that it would offer free grocery delivery to Molokai and Kalaupapa in response to a temporary closure of one of the island’s two main grocery stores. Some store employees there reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. The offer for free shipping is good for up to 50 pounds of groceries per customer and is valid for the rest of the April.
Later in the week, Mokulele expanded its Grocery Airlift to include flights to Lanai, Hana, and Waimea starting last Friday morning and lasting until the end of the month.

Friendly Market on Molokai has announced that it will be closed until April 20, with all employees currently in self-quarantine.…

This new learning environment offers lessons in Hawaiian language and culture designed for students aged 5 through 11. Life Sciences Scholarship Deadline Extended

In response to hurdles posed by the difficult coronavirus situation, the application deadline for the Bayer Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship has been extended to May 15. The previous deadline was April 1. Molokai students have previously been awarded this scholarship.

According Alan Takemoto, community affairs manager for Bayer Hawaii: “Over the past few days, we’ve heard from students and counselors that school closures related to COVID-19 have created challenges to completing scholarship applications. Our hope in extending this year’s deadline is that more students statewide will be able to apply for scholarship funds to help further their education.”…

Filing for Federal Business Funding

Last Friday, just after 10 a.m., The Molokai Dispatch filed its application for assistance under the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) of the CARES Act. The filing was accepted by the Bank of Hawaii and assigned a reference number. We learned some things through the application process we think might be helpful for fellow Molokai businesses.

The PPP is designed to provide assistance to small businesses, generally defined as having less than five hundred employees, in meeting payroll and other key costs through this diffi-cult time. If a business keeps its staff through the eight weeks following the loan, then the amount of the payroll costs during this period will be forgiven and the loan balance re-duced.…

Micro Business Loan Program

County of Maui News Release

Mayor Michael Victorino announced the launch of the Micro Business Loan Program to help business owners impacted by COVID-19 on Molokai, Lanai and Maui.

The County of Maui is committing $1 million for the program, which will be administered by the Maui Chamber of Commerce, to support economic viability.

“This loan program is designed to help our smallest businesses applying for a loan online with 10 or fewer employees,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “We are so grateful to all those who are supporting the health of our people by staying at home. Through this partnership with the Chamber of Commerce we can help them cover their finances during this difficult time.”…

Small Business Assistance on MEDB Website

County of Maui News Release

Federal programs for small businesses on Molokai as well as step-by-step instructions on how to apply for assistance due to impacts from COVID-19 are available on Maui Economic Development Board Inc.’s (MEDB) website at medb.org.

The information and assistance is part of a joint effort between the County of Maui, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and MEDB.

Library Offers Free Film Streaming

Even though the Molokai Public Library is currently closed, you can still enjoy the benefits. The popular on-demand film streaming service Kanopy is now available for free until April 30 to all Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) library card holders. Library card holders can sign up to start streaming films by visiting ibrarieshawaii.kanopy.com. Films can be streamed from any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android or Roku.
