Molokai Inspired Art by MAC’s Artist in Residence

The Molokai Arts Center would like to invite you to review the release of Jamie Allen’s original artwork that she created during her three-week Artist in Residence program through the Molokai Arts Center. Allen carried out her residency in May of 2019 and is now sharing her diaristic works of paper. Her goals for her residency was to document native plants and experience the island of Molokai. She worked closely with the Molokai Land Trust, spent a night at Kalaupapa, hiked Kamakou, and drew at Mo’omomi and the gardens at the Hui Ho’olana. For Jamie, Molokai has been the example of peace and pausing these days.…

Hawaii Sustainability Plan Update

Molokai residents wanting to participate in the State of Hawaii Office of Planning (OP) Statewide Sustainability Program will be able to do so in a series of virtual statewide Information Sharing Sessions to inform everyone about the Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan (the Plan). The Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan is being updated and revised to serve as the State’s climate and sustainability strategic action plan.

“The people of the State of Hawaii have long understood the challenges of our finite resources and the importance of co-existing with our ʻaina,” said Gov. David Ige. “We are witnessing rising sea levels, temperature rise, and a decrease in precipitation; these climate change hazards require long-term sustainability planning to guide strategic implementation.”…

Applicants are being sought for 46 vacancies on Maui County boards, commissions, councils and committees, including on the Molokai Planning Commission.

Vacancies include five on the Council of Aging, four on the Public Works Commission and three on the Maui County Arborist Committee.

Molokai School Meal Changes

This is an announcement about precautions being taken due to a positive COVID-19 case involving a Molokai High School employee. The affected employee was last on the Molokai High School campus on Friday, Sept. 4, and had minimal interaction with staff and no interaction with students. Any impacted areas were professionally cleaned and disinfected over the weekend.

The case had the potential to indirectly affect meal service at multiple campuses.

We extend a sincere mahalo to Rep. Lynn DeCoite for her kokua in securing an alternative provider for student meals during this temporary period. This will allow for uninterrupted grab-and-go meal service for our students.…

Complete Census at the Library

The Molokai Public Library (MPL) was the recipient of a Library Census Equity Fund Mini-Grant from the American Library Association to support outreach activities for the 2020 Census. A table is available daily in front of the library Monday through Friday to inform the community about the importance of completing the census and to provide use of Wifi and an iPad to complete the census on site. Incentives are available for anyone completing the census on site.

New Online Travel Application Mandatory

A new online Safe Travels application will be mandatory for all travelers on Sept. 1, the State of Hawaii announced. This new digital application, which collects the required health and travel information, is critical to protecting the health of our residents and visitors alike. Safe Travels is one part of a multi-layered screening process which includes arrival temperature checks, and secondary screening for those with symptoms or temperatures of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The application can be found at travel.hawaii.gov.

Moratorium on Electric Disconnections Extended

Hawaiian Electric service disconnections for nonpayment have been suspended through Dec. 31 for Molokai residents and customers statewide. The company urges customers challenged by the financial impact of COVID-19 to seek utility bill assistance from government and nonprofits, and to set up a payment arrangement plan.

The Public Utilities Commission yesterday ordered utilities to extend through Dec. 31 the moratorium on service disconnections for nonpayment. The company voluntarily suspended its collection efforts in March to ensure customers’ electric service would not be disrupted while many were staying home. The PUC subsequently ordered all utilities to suspend disconnections and Hawaiian Electric has since been following with the commission’s orders and timing for the disconnection moratorium.…
