Complete Census at the Library

MPL News Release

The Molokai Public Library (MPL) was the recipient of a Library Census Equity Fund Mini-Grant from the American Library Association to support outreach activities for the 2020 Census. A table is available daily in front of the library Monday through Friday to inform the community about the importance of completing the census and to provide use of Wifi and an iPad to complete the census on site. Incentives are available for anyone completing the census on site.

New Online Travel Application Mandatory

A new online Safe Travels application will be mandatory for all travelers on Sept. 1, the State of Hawaii announced. This new digital application, which collects the required health and travel information, is critical to protecting the health of our residents and visitors alike. Safe Travels is one part of a multi-layered screening process which includes arrival temperature checks, and secondary screening for those with symptoms or temperatures of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The application can be found at travel.hawaii.gov.

Moratorium on Electric Disconnections Extended

Hawaiian Electric service disconnections for nonpayment have been suspended through Dec. 31 for Molokai residents and customers statewide. The company urges customers challenged by the financial impact of COVID-19 to seek utility bill assistance from government and nonprofits, and to set up a payment arrangement plan.

The Public Utilities Commission yesterday ordered utilities to extend through Dec. 31 the moratorium on service disconnections for nonpayment. The company voluntarily suspended its collection efforts in March to ensure customers’ electric service would not be disrupted while many were staying home. The PUC subsequently ordered all utilities to suspend disconnections and Hawaiian Electric has since been following with the commission’s orders and timing for the disconnection moratorium.…

Help Form a Community-Owned Energy Coop

On Saturday, Sept. 5, from 9 to 10 a.m., we will host another virtual public meeting to further our progress on formation of a cooperative to design and own renewable energy projects on Molokai. This follows in a series of community workshops hosted on Molokai about Community-Based Renewable Energy (CBRE). At these workshops, community residents expressed the desire for CBRE projects to be owned and managed locally by a cooperative entity. These meetings will be held regularly every two weeks to continue the effort to formalize this energy cooperative.

At this meeting, we will define and assign steering committee roles, draft a milestones timeline for incorporating the cooperative, draft a sources and uses budget, review site selection information and draft a rubric for vetting partners.…

Hawaii Craftsmen Exhibition Still On

Hawaii Craftsmen is still planning to hold its annual statewide exhibition and is doing everything they can to make sure that it will be a successful and safe experience for all of Hawaii’s artists. Hawaii Craftsmen has developed contingency plans that take into account different levels of social distancing and travel restrictions. Growing up on the Mississippi coast, the sea and adventure were always a part of Sister Ardis Kremers’ life. As the daughter of an engineer running a boat building business, being outdoors was natural. She loved to sail and experience life. With her love for God and spirit of adventure, she discovered the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America that we know as Maryknoll. She would have to wait a year before she could enter into religious life. She was invited to Maryknoll, New York to begin life as a Maryknoll Sister at the tender age of 19 years old.…
