Homestead Associations Upgrade Enrollment System

SCHHA News Release

The Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations (SCHHA) ended the 2021 calendar year by completing the installation of a modern membership enrollment database.  

“This is a major milestone year for our homesteads and waitlist families,” said Sybil Lopez, SCHHA Vice Chairwoman.  “After 35 years since our founding, we have a modern server and software system to replace our antiquated enrollment system of individuals that are members of homestead associations they belong to.”

The SCHHA Homestead Enrollment Modernization Project was adopted by homestead and waitlist leaders in 2019 from all across the state, to upgrade technology for a database that empowers individuals to register, engage and vote in elections of homestead associations including the SCHHA beginning in 2023.…

Funding Assistance for Restaurants and Bars

Maui County News Release

The Maui County Small Business Grant Program for Restaurants, Bars and Gyms was launched last week through a partnership with Maui Federal Credit Union, Mayor Michael Victorino announced. The grant uses American Rescue Plan funding to help businesses struggling in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Applications will be available online at mauinuistrong.info/maui-county-small-business-grant. Applications will only be accepted online and will not be available at the credit unions. A form 1099 is required upon application. Consult your tax preparer.

Grants are being offered, not business expense reimbursements.

“I encourage operators of qualifying restaurants, bars and gyms to take advantage of this opportunity to get a $5,000 grant to help them weather this pandemic,” Victorino said.…

Feral Animal Control Program Application

The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns is soliciting grant proposals for feral animal control program funds available for Molokai and Lanai in FY2022. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31. 

Grant applications may be submitted by all qualified private nonprofit and for-profit organizations providing or planning to provide island specific services and programs for the control of feral animals within Molokai and Lanai.

Contribute to Arts Education Funding

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is honored to once again participate in the annual “Aloha for Hawaii Charities” fundraising opportunity, in conjunction with the Sony Open PGA Tour tournament. Adopt-A-Highway Recognizes Molokai Teachers

For more than two decades, members of the Hawaii State Teachers Association’s Molokai Chapter have helped protect their island by removing unsightly and environmentally damaging trash along Maunaloa Highway. In 2021, Sust’ainable Molokai celebrated our 11th year of serving our island as a nonprofit. The organization has seen major growth in recent years. Today, we have nearly 20 employees operating a multitude of programs including a Food Sovereignty initiative that trains new farmers and brings locally produced food to the community through a weekly Mobile Market as well as monthly Food Bank distributions. Another blossoming program is our Energy Sovereignty initiative that is currently facilitating a community-led renewable energy plan and also responsible for Hui-Up energy-star appliance exchanges. ‘Aina Kupuna Bill

County of Maui News Release

Mayor Michael Victorino has signed Bill 118 — the ʻAina Kapuna bill — that establishes a mechanism to provide long-time Maui families with tax relief for inherited real property in a Special Management Area. Introduced by Maui County Council Vice-Chair Keani Rawlins-Fernandez of Molokai, the bill intends to protect kamaʻaina from being taxed out of family land due to real estate speculation by outside investors.

“I am in strong support of tax protection for our long-time Maui families,” said Mayor Victorino. “At the same time, I am recommending further review of the Maui County Code to determine if there are unintended consequences that may threaten the viability of this tax relief program.…

Art-Filled New Year

These past 20 months have been quite subdued at the Molokai Arts Center, but we’re looking forward to an exciting, art-filled 2022!

Our Artist in Residence program will be back on track with our first artist arriving in January. The MAC AIR program offers artists the perfect backdrop to create, explore, and experience a unique culture. 2022 will bring an established movie/TV scriptwriter, an Oceanic wood sculptor, a world-renown conductor/concert pianist, and a Kanaka Maoli musician.

The Performing Arts component will grow in 2022, beginning with ukulele classes and theatre workshops in addition to presentations by our AIR musicians.…
