Agricultural Micro Grant Available

Molokai farmers and ranchers have an opportunity for funding assistance. Applications for the popular Agricultural Micro Grant Program 3.0 – which offers up to $25,000 to Maui County small farmers and ranchers – will be available beginning Monday, Oct. 17.

The $3 million Maui County-funded program, administered by Maui Economic Opportunity’s Business Development Center, is open to operating farms on less than 12 acres and livestock ranches up to 40 acres possessing a county business or state general excise license as of July 1, 2022. Preference will be given to women and Native Hawaiians.

Grants may be used to directly impact the availability of locally-grown produce, livestock and poultry and other related products.…

Temporary Pool Closure Upcoming

Pool guard trainee testing will be conducted Oct. 20 at the Cooke Memorial Pool on Molokai. The pool will be closed to the public from 9 a.m. to noon for the physical swim test of pool guard trainees, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced. The facility will reopen from 1 to 4 p.m. that day for lap and recreational swimming.

The department appreciates the public’s patience and understanding.

Catch the Reading Wave

Friends of Molokai Public Library News Release 

The Molokai Public Library, working with all the island elementary schools and homeschoolers, is challenging all Molokai third graders to “Catch the Reading Wave.”

When they join the challenge, each third grade student will be given a bag of books to take home to build a personal library. Activities online and in classrooms will involve reading and thinking about what they have read, to build their reading skills. Challenging activities include identifying if a book is fiction or nonfiction, finding main ideas, defining words by using the dictionary that comes with the bag, and treasure hunts within the books.…

Fall Break Youth Theatre Class

This Fall Intersession, Oct. 3-7, the Molokai Arts Center (MAC), in collaboration with Kualapu’u School and FilCom CARES, will bring in Honolulu Theatre for Youth for a five-day theatre/drama class for students enrolled in grades 2 to 6. Limit is 35 students and registration has already begun.

The class will be face-to-face at Kualapu’u School Cafeteria from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. No transportation will be provided. Students must bring their own water bottle, snack, and lunch. The enrollment form can be found at forms.gle/1kQ8BMtdZe2wWS7LA. Complete one form per child.

On Sunday Sept. 4, 2022 Molokai lost Dr. William Thomas, Jr. Dr. Thomas came to Molokai over 20 years ago to “pay back” a Native Hawaiian student loan and quickly saw that he perfectly fit into this community.

Dr. Thomas’ entry to medicine was an interesting one. In his early 30’s working as a restaurant manager he decided to try to move into the medical field. That led to admission to John A. Burns School of Medicine and his eventual position as Medical Director of Internal Affairs at Molokai General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Thomas was instrumental in governance at MGH and was key to the ongoing strength of our oncology program.…

Volunteers Sought for Community Emergency Response

Maui County News Release 

The Maui Emergency Management Agency is seeking community volunteers in Maui County to be a part of the Community Emergency Response Team, also known as CERT. MEMA sponsors and administers this national program designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Maui Fire Department provides training for all CERT volunteers, including basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations, along with access to a comprehensive medical for firearm certificate.

Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) announced the addition of Dr. Raquel Cisneros to its clinical provider team. Dr. Cisneros is a board-certified family and community medicine physician with extensive experience working in underserved populations. She earned her medical degree at the University of Arizona and completed her family and community medicine residency training at the University of New Mexico as its chief resident. As the youngest of nine children to migrant farm workers, Dr. Cisneros understands the importance of the family unit and how it affects the health of the community. Maui Economic Opportunity on Molokai has stepped in to offer transportation services to youths who could not be accommodated by the public school bus service.

The state Department of Education sent out an email to families last week indicating that about 17 students on two central Kaunakakai routes were being put on a waitlist for rides on the school bus due to a driver shortage.

To fill the gap, MEO Transportation on Molokai will accommodate students on its 9 a.m. rural shuttle from the Mitchell Pauole Center, which should arrive at Molokai High in time for the 9:30 a.m.…
