Children’s Theatre of Molokai Launches

Hokulani CTOM News Release 

There are currently no ongoing theatrical opportunities in the community or any of Molokai schools. To fill this gap, a grassroots community effort began in 2022 by Vicki Boswell, a former elementary school performing arts teacher and social worker from the island. The mission of Hokulani Children’s Theatre of Molokai (Hokulani CTOM) is to enrich the lives of young people and inspire them to build a better community by gaining performing art experience that will deepen their understanding of human connections and values. Hokulani CTOM is in the process of being created.

Working with other community organizations we officially launch in January with our first community production play, “The Legend of Mulan” for youth between the ages of 7 and 14 years old. …

MHS Robotics Begins New Season

MHS Robotics News Release 

After a successful comeback in FIRST Robotics late last school year, the Molokai High School Robotics Team competed at its first in-person VEX Robotics Tournament in over two years on at Maui High and managed to finish as tournament finalists and won the Judges Award!

For this season, we are expecting to compete at least six times — four with VEX Robotics and two with FIRST Robotics.

In addition to competitions, MHS Robotics has also revived the Molokai Robotics VEX IQ League, which we last hosted in 2019. The league serves as an opportunity for local elementary/middle school robotics teams to compete without having to spend money traveling interisland.…

 “I walk a beach marked by the ebbing tide,” says ceramic artist Arabella Ark, “where I step over broken coral and loose limu to the pond wall. There I watch the heron fishing, the kolea pecking, the fish jumping, while whales breach in the channel beyond the reef. The wind picks up and the sea begins to churn. These are the elements of design on my ceramics.”

Life Sciences Scholarship Available

Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Bayer Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship.

High school seniors on Molokai interested in a life sciences degree are invited to apply. As many as 10 scholarships of $1,000 each are typically awarded each year. To date, more than $150,000 in scholarships have been granted to Hawaii students through this program.

 This scholarship is open to graduating seniors of all high schools in Hawaii who will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a discipline related to the life sciences (including agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science, soil science, and more).…

Hawaiian Homes Commission 2023 Meeting

The Hawaiian Homes Commission (HHC), the nine-person executive board that governs the Department of Hawaiian Homes Lands (DHHL), has approved and announced its 2023 meeting calendar. 

The meetings will be held in communities statewide in compliance with Act 220, passed by the 2021 legislature and signed into law by Gov. David Ige on July 6, 2021. Act 220 provides state agencies the flexibility to utilize interactive conference technology for the public to view meetings online as well as provide remote oral testimony so board members and other participants can hear the testimony whether through the internet, a telephone, or other means. …

In honor of King Kamehameha V, Lota Kapuāiwa Kalanimakua Aliʻiōlani Kalanikupuapaʻīkalaninui, who introduced the axis deer to Molokai and who’s lā hānau (birthday) is on Dec. 11, 1830, Molokai Hunting Club will host another free deer meat drive to our Molokai families. We honor our fifth reigning Monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, as axis deer continues to be a prime food source for our Molokai community. Onipa’a Kakou!

Farmers Union United Molokai Chapter Grows

Hawaii Farmers Union United (HFUU) is a statewide organization of farm owners, foodies, ranchers, gardeners, perma-culturalists, cultural practitioners, landscapers, suppliers, businesses, and policy advocates that are all part of the local food chain. HFUU asserts that a multitude of smallholder diversified family farms that implement regenerative ecological techniques in growing and raising our food will create a resilient, vital, and productive agricultural system to better feed the people of Hawaii. Partnership Makes Possible Prom Dress Giveaway

Maui Economic Opportunity Youth Services on Molokai, The Bella Project Hawaii and Mokulele Airlines are playing Cinderella by offering 75 prom dresses at no cost to Molokai youth, who normally have to travel off-island to purchase their formal wear.

The Oahu-based nonprofit collects donations of dresses, shoes, jewelry and accessories and gives them away to high schoolers. The Bella Project also partners with nonprofit organizations that work with low income, special needs, critically ill and military high schoolers.

Bella means beautiful in many languages; the goal is to create “Bellas of the Ball,” according to the Bella Hawaii program.…
