Twenty-three Molokai youth participated in games and activities that highlighted the negative impacts of alcohol, tobacco and bullying and learned about their “sources of strength” at the second Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) run Kamp Kaohi on April 13 and 14 at Molokai Baptist Church.
The middle and high school youth maneuvered around an obstacle course wearing goggles that simulate drunkenness, played the telephone game to illustrate the harm of spreading rumors, and learned the power of listening. Other activities focused on leadership, resiliency and effective communication.
Dr. Deborah Goebert of the John A. Burns School of Medicine stopped by to present her “Sources of Strength” curriculum, which touched on mental health and suicide prevention.…

Education Scholarships Available

Scholarships of up to $5,000 per year are available for Molokai residents who are AlohaCare members pursuing higher education in a healthcare related field.
To help celebrate World Health Day on April 7, nonprofit healthcare plan AlohaCare pledged to donate $1 million this year through its Imua Loa giving program. The program supports community organizations and future healthcare workers to help improve the health and well-being of our community. AlohaCare welcomes applicants for 2024 funding. Submissions will be reviewed and awarded on a rolling basis until June 3 for scholarships and through Oct. 31 for other funding requests until funds have been distributed.…

Molokai’s Hawaii Kai Corporation – Gourmet Sea Salts, was one of 40 Hawaii companies to showcase their products at the renowned 49th International Food and Beverage Exhibition (FoodEx) 2024. The event, held from March 5-8, at the Tokyo Big Sight in the Tokyo International Exhibition Center, stands as Asia’s premier food and beverage trade show.

With an impressive attendance of approximately 76,000 qualified buyers, FoodEx featured over 3,000 booths from more than 70 countries, making it a global platform for culinary innovation and commerce.

The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism sponsored the Hawaii Pavilion at FoodEx, a popular stop for buyers at the show.…

National Science Foundation News Release

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is conducting consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act related to NSF funding to the University of Hawaii for research entitled “Unmarked Burials at a Molokai Cemetery: Building and Broadening Community Engaged Research Methods, Faculty Networks, and Student STEM Opportunities.”

The research is in response to a request made by the Saint Damien Cemetery Committee for identification of unmarked burials at a cemetery located on Molokai, which would allow the Cemetery Committee to place commemorative markers where appropriate, to identify space for future burials, and to document who is buried at unmarked burials, to the extent that those are known, based on archival and ethnographic research.…

The period of youth is full of potential as young people apply themselves to developing their capacity to serve their communities. U’ilei Pimental’s passion is empowering these young people. She has experienced first-hand the impact moral empowerment programs have had on the lives of youth, their family, and the well-being of their community.

National Marine Sanctuary Proposal

Molokai residents can weigh in on a proposal by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) to create a national marine sanctuary in Papahanaumokuakea at a public meeting April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kulana ʻOʻiwi.

Following input from state and federal agencies, local communities and the public, NOAA has released for public comment its draft proposal to designate marine portions of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument as a national marine sanctuary. The proposal would supplement and complement existing authorities, including the area’s designation as a marine national monument, which will continue to be in effect.
