AlohaCare Appoints Molokai Resident to Board of Directors

As the state’s third largest health plan dedicated to serving Hawaii’s most vulnerable populations, AlohaCare has appointed Molokai resident Desiree Puhi, executive director of Molokai Ohana Health Care, Inc to its board of directors for 2010-2011. Other new board members include Sheila Beckham, Executive Director of Waikiki Health Center; Dr. Janet Onopa, Medical Director at Queen Emma Clinic and; Anthony Guerrero Jr., who recently retired late last year as Vice Chairman and Group Manager of Retail Banking Group at First Hawaiian Bank.

Molokai’s Affordable Housing to Expand

Molokai Habitat for Humanity News Release, with Artice Swingle and John Wordin

Emillia Noordhoek recently attended the annual advocacy conference for Habitat for Humanity International, ‘Habitat on the Hill,’ in Washington D.C.  At this important conference, training is given on advocating regarding issues dealing with affordable housing.  Post-conference interviews allowed Noordhoek to advocate for affordable housing on Molokai with Senator Daniel Inouye and Representative Mazie Hirono. 

Issues concerning Federal dollars allocated to affordable housing and mortgage regulation related to the SAFE Act have a direct bearing on the operation of Molokai Habitat for Humanity.  Noordhoek was able to present a clear picture of the needs of the community to our lawmakers who were very receptive and helped to stress the importance of continued funding and support. 

Molokai Habitat for Humanity is expanding its operation to support both affordable housing on Hawaiian Homelands and other properties as well.  Critical to this expansion is tapping into federal programs which will support this effort.   Sustainable building and achieving high level efficiency in terms of energy use is key in working toward a sustainable Molokai.  Noordhoek’s contact will be critical in uncovering and maintaining federal funding for our community.

Supporting Molokai’s position in the conference with Inouye was Jonathan Reckford, CEO for Habitat of Humanity International.   Inouye as Housing Appropriations Committee is critical to the success of Habitat for Humanity and continued funding for affordable housing.

Hirono’s support  was welcomed.  Suggestion was made that we request funds from Housing L.A. which funds affordable housing projects.  This will be Noordhoek’s challenge upon returning to Molokai. 

As community members concerned with providing affordable energy efficient housing for all qualified applicants, we are indeed delighted that Noordhoek had this opportunity to represent Molokai and her needs.

Veterans of Italy Tour

Association of Descendents of Veterans of WWII Italian Campaign will tour Italy and the American battlefield cemeteries during September 2010.

Veterans, their families, children and grandchildren will visit Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Cassino, Salerno and the military cemeteries at Florence and Anzio-Nettuno to honor and to remember those 24,000 combat soldiers and Navy men who gave up their lives in the battle against the Nazis in 1943-1945.

Molokai Fishers Register Laynets, Bottomfish Rules

Department of Land and Natural Resources News Release

Lanai and Molokai fishers can register their laynets with staff of the Department of Land and Natural Resources Aquatic (DLNR) Resources Division, who will be on island this month for scheduled public hearings on proposed amendments to bottomfish rules.

The Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) staff will also be available to answer any questions or concerns about various marine resource management issues, such as regulated species rule changes, and will be able to issue commercial fishing licenses or information on DAR’s new onlline commercial fish catch reporting system using the Internet.

What Book got you Hooked on Reading? Contest

First Book News Release

Hawaii won the nation wide contest and now the 50,000 books are on their way to Hawaii.  Thanks to all of you who voted and made us the winner.

The books will arrive in March.  There will be a First Book 50,000 Book Celebration on March 25th on Oahu and the books will be distributed on March 26th. All past recipient of a First Book grant should be on the list to receive books, it is very important that you check frequently with www.firstbook.org  and follow any and all directions.

Hawaii Eco-Lights Saves Locals Money

Hawaii Eco-Lights, the leader in energy saving concepts, announced two local companies, Napa Friendly Island Auto Parts and Molokai Shores, have taken advantage of LED technology and are seeing the cost savings.

“We have seen at least a fifty five percent cost savings on our monthly electricity bill.” said Ed Wond, owner of Napa Friendly Island Auto Parts in Molokai. “While Hawaii Eco-Lights works in conjunction with our solar panels, we have found LED to be much more cost effective for our business.”

Tsunami Response

When we received news Friday night of the devastating earthquake in Chile and the resulting tsunami waves that were approaching Hawai‘i, emergency response personnel across the state sprang into action.  The outstanding coordination resulted in a well-executed operation to keep the residents and visitors of Hawai‘i safe.

State and County Civil Defense officials, scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, lifeguards, police officers, firefighters and other first-responders were well prepared to carry out their duties, and they worked together calmly and efficiently.

Military leaders at Pacific Command on O‘ahu and officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were standing by in case we needed their help. Hawai‘i tourism leaders worked closely with state and county officials to make sure our visitors were safe and well informed.  The media ensured residents and visitors received accurate and timely information.

Our residents did their part by evacuating from danger zones and stocking up on emergency supplies – and they did so without panicking and without losing their aloha spirit.

Fortunately, the tsunami waves were much smaller than predicted and no damage was reported on any island. We were very fortunate.

Looking back at the events of this weekend, I come away with an even deeper appreciation of how extensively our state has prepared for emergencies, and how professionally everyone responded when the time for action arrived.

This gives me great confidence that our state will be ready for the next emergency, be it a tsunami, hurricane, earthquake or other natural or man-made disaster. At the same time, it is critical that we continue to prepare for emergencies and work to improve our response capabilities. Mahalo to everyone who played a part in keeping Hawai‘i safe.

U.S. Census Road Tour – Molokai

2010 Census questionnaires will be mailed beginning March 15-17. Residents are encouraged to mail back the questionnaires by Census Day on April 1. In early April, census takers will go door to door to assist residents who did not mail back their questionnaire.

For those without mailboxes, the Hawaii Counts 2010 Census Road Tour is making four stops on Molokai this week.
