The Global Citizenship Speaker Series at the Molokai Public Library continues Wednesday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. with a presentation by U’ileiuluwehi Pimental from Kona, Hawaii Island. Her talk is titled “Empowering Youth: Reflections on its implications for individuals and communities.”
The period of youth is full of potential as young people apply themselves to developing their capacity to serve their communities. U’ilei Pimental’s passion is empowering these young people. She has experienced first-hand the impact moral empowerment programs have had on the lives of youth, their family, and the well-being of their community.

National Marine Sanctuary Proposal

Molokai residents can weigh in on a proposal by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) to create a national marine sanctuary in Papahanaumokuakea at a public meeting April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kulana ʻOʻiwi.

Following input from state and federal agencies, local communities and the public, NOAA has released for public comment its draft proposal to designate marine portions of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument as a national marine sanctuary. The proposal would supplement and complement existing authorities, including the area’s designation as a marine national monument, which will continue to be in effect.

The third presentation in the Global Citizenship Speaker Series at the Molokai Public Library will occur Wednesday, March 13 at 5:30 p.m. with special guest Dr. Keanu Sai of Hilo. Dr. Sai will speak on the theme “Sovereignty in a Globalized World.”

Keanu Sai is widely known for his research and publications centered on the continued
existence of the Hawaiian Kingdom as an independent state. A founding member of
the Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics, he served as Lead Agent for the Council of Regency representing the Hawaiian Kingdom in arbitration proceedings at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague from 1999-2001.…

The 14th Annual Soup ‘R Bowl will be held on Saturday, March 9, and brings us back to the Molokai Community Health Center, under the banyan tree with an oceanside backdrop. Doors will open at 6 p.m.This year also sees the return of the VIP Early Entry for our patrons to select bowls and/or find seats first. If you didn’t get your ticket in the mail, we’ll have your name at the VIP entry to the right of the main entrance.

This year, Future Fest will include one and two hour workshops along with the college and career fair. The goals of each workshop are to provide students hands-on opportunities to further explore their career interest and assist students in making a plan to make their post-high school dreams and journeys a reality. For 16 years, Molokai Drugs has been a preceptor site for interns from the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICOP) at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. As you can imagine, it was an honor to host Dr. Rae Matsumoto, the new dean at DKICOP, and Dr. Jarred Prudencio, the professor in charge of internships and experiences, on their first ever trip to Molokai. They were hosted by Molokai Drugs’ staff and were able to see first-hand the benefits and challenges of managing a rural, community pharmacy on an island with 7,000 residents.

Fiber Internet Service Available for 95% of Molokai

Hawaiian Telcom expanded availability of its fast, reliable fiber internet service Fioptics to four of Molokai’s five zip codes, which equates to more than 95 percent of the island. Many Molokai residents may qualify for free service from the HI Connect Broadband Project.

Nearly 4,500 residents and businesses of Ho‘olehua, Kaunakakai, Kualapu‘u, and Maunaloa can access Hawaiian Telcom’s Fioptics internet service that delivers the fastest upload speed in the state of 500 megabits per second and 1 gigabit per second download, which is among the fastest speeds in Hawaii.

Snake Found in Shipping Container

A live snake was found in a shipping container on Molokai the morning of Jan. 8, while it was being unloaded at a hardware store in Kaunakakai. Maui County Police on Molokai were called to the hardware store shortly after 8 a.m. Arriving officers shot and killed the snake with a pellet gun. The snake measured about 20-inches long and has been identified as a non-venomous gopher snake.

Staff from the Molokai Invasive Species Committee (MoMISC) held the dead snake at the hardware store until Maui Plant Quarantine Branch inspectors from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) arrived on the island just before noon.…
