Berry, Hawaiian Telcom News Release
The race is on to see what island’s schools can collect the most telephone directories per student to win cash prizes. Berry and Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages (HTYP) are once again challenging local schools to Think Yellow, Go Green and reduce their environmental footprint. Berry is kicking off its yellow pages recycling program, Think Yellow, Go Green (TYGG), on behalf of HTYP. Forty-five schools on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai are competing in the contest.
“If you lined up last year’s 16 tons of recycled directories, it would stretch one-and-a-half miles long, end to end,” said Scott Szczekocki, client services regional director for Berry, publisher of HTYP directories.
Door to Door
U.S. Census Bureau News Release
Haven’t sent in your census form? You may be getting a visit soon – and you’re not alone. On May 1, nearly 2,700 census takers will begin statewide door-to-door canvassing to collect information from about 200,000 households that did not return their census forms by mail.
In Maui County, including Molokai, an estimated 36,500 households are scheduled to be contacted. Other numbers around the state are even higher, with Honolulu County alone having 77,000 homes that will be visited.

Molokai High School News Release
Jocelyn Buchalter and Heidi Jenkins have been selected to travel to Japan with the Department of Education (DOE). They will be traveling to Kyoto and Tokyo in June to visit six schools and the Board of Education (Shibuya Ward). This trip is sponsored by the JTB Goodwill Foundation, a non-profit Hawaii corporation formed by Japan Travel Bureau International, Inc. (JTBI).
The Foundation’s purpose is to promote cultural, educational and athletic exchanges among the Pacific nations, to make contributions to other charitable organizations, and to engage in other charitable activities. With full cooperation from the Honolulu Japanese Consulate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the JTB Goodwill Foundation has sent over 100 educators to Japan. This year marks the 20th year of the Hawaii Educators' Mission to Japan.

Habitat for Humanity, Lowe’s Challenge Women
Habitat for Humanity – Molokai News Release
In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, construction crews of women volunteers will be pounding nails and raising walls at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 1 – 9. Lowe’s and Molokai Habitat for Humanity are looking for local women volunteers to work one day on a Molokai Habitat construction site during the nine-day event. Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary.

Marching to the Band The Hawaii
All-State Marching Band has been selected to perform in the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The All-State band, composed of high school band students from across the state, will represent Hawaii in the world-famous holiday spectacular with their fantastic musical, marching and cultural artistry. The Hawaii All-State Marching Band is one of 10 bands selected for the 2011 Parade out of more than 150 applicants nationwide. The superior musical ability, marching and performance skills the group has displayed under the leadership of John Riggle and his team won them a slot in the legendary Parade that will see them step into the

Thousands lined up in front of the Waikiki Community Center to apply as extras for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." Some of them got there as early as 2 a.m. Sande Alessi Casting of California started early last Saturday morning in its call for hundreds of extras in the fourth installment of the Disney action-adventure film series starring Johnny Depp. The film seeks men to play pirates, sailors and stand-ins, including authentic-looking scavenger types ages 18 to 60 of all ethnicities. It seeks men who are thin, tall, short or emaciated as well as those with huge noses, lazy eyes, grizzled and wrinkled faces, odd body types and missing limbs and teeth. The "Pirates" film will be shot on Kauai and Oahu this summer, wrapping up some time in August. The film is slated for release in summer 2011.

Have you mailed in your census information yet? Molokai is lagging behind state averages for response rates, and Census 2010 workers are doing extra work on the island to raise participation. Census information is important because it plays a key role in determining where more than $400 billion of federal funding goes to such services as hospitals, schools, bridges and roads and emergency services. Many use the data on an everyday basis to improve people’s quality of life. It also affects the numbers of seats Hawaii occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives.

With the tax filing deadline of April 15 close at hand, the IRS wants taxpayers to know several excellent tips to consider if they are still working on their federal tax return.
“It’s important the taxpayers carefully review their tax returns before filing,” said IRS spokesman David A. Tucker II. “Accuracy is always important. There may also be credits taxpayers are eligible for that will help reduce their tax responsibility or increase their refunds.”

Community Work Day Program Starts Battery Recycling Program
Community Work Day News Release
Kicking off the annual Great American Cleanup in Maui County is the Community Work Day Program (CWD), launching a county-wide household battery recycling program. Fifteen local businesses have partnered on this program to be drop-off sites to recycle household batteries on the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai.
CWD will be distributing several “Big Green Box” battery receptacles to participating stores and will handle pickup and shipping of the batteries to the mainland for processing. The “Big Green Box” program offers an easy way for consumers to care for the environment. Used household batteries on Molokai can be dropped off at Misaki's.
