Help us celebrate this year’s National Library Week from April 8-14 with a series of programs around the state, and on Molokai.

John Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). Keawe will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the music of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and others, in addition to presenting his original compositions, at the Molokai Public Library on April 11 at 3 p.m.…

Molokai Arts Center is pleased to announce that a weekly open house for ukulele practice will be held on Sundays at 1 p.m. beginning Sunday April 8. Bring your uke and music to strum and sing old and new favorites.

This kanikapila style get together will be hosted by April Torres. Afterwards, you may wish to attend the weekly concert by Na Ohana Hoaloha on the deck at Coffees of Hawaii from 3 to
5 p.m. The Essence of Ohana coffee shop is open on Sundays serving their famous Mocha Mamas as well as soups, salads, sandwiches and local food favorites such as saimin and spam musubi.…

Molokai Arts Center is pleased to announce a new class offering beginning in April 2012. Yoellah Yuhudah will teach the art of glass and clay bead making beginning on Tuesday April 17 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. for an eight-week session. This art is also called “lampworking.”

In this structured curriculum, students will learn to make perfectly round beads as well as glass techniques like flowers, raking stripes and dragging techniques to create shapes and feather colors. The emphasis will be on safety and proper use of tools including the mandrell, the torch and various materials.…

Kaunakakai Resident Completes 78-day Expedition

National Outdoor Leadership School News Release

Colby Smith of Kaunakakai recently completed a 78-day semester exploring the mountains, deserts and coastlines of the Baja California Peninsula with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS.)

From Sept. 21 to Dec. 7, 2011, Smith’s group of 14 students was introduced to a variety of adventure-based skills such as backpacking, sea kayaking, sailing and costal navigation.

The first section of the students’ semester began with 21 days of hiking in the Sierra San Pedro Mountains in northern Baja California— a volcanic mountain range extending over 1,000 miles down the spine of the peninsula. Students learned skills like terrain management and navigation.…

Marine Corps Consultations to Be Held on Molokai Airport Use

Marine Corps Base (MCB) Hawaii is proposing renewed use of the Molokai Airport as a re-fueling location for MV-22 “Osprey” and H-1 “Huey” and “Cobra” helicopters, as well as increased use of Kalaupapa Airport by the H-1 helicopters. On Tuesday March 27, at Mitchell Pauole Center conference room from 5 to 7 p.m., the Marine Corps is holding National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 consultations to discuss issues and concerns related to potential effects on historic properties in the vicinity of these airports.

MCB Hawaii initiated Section 106 consultations in November 2010, and expanded consultations in December, 2011, to include discussions of other locations in Hawaii outside Oahu.…

Stand Up paddle Association of Molokai (SUPAM) had their first race of the this year’s series Makani Ikaika O Molokai, on March 10th, 2012. This event lived up to its name. The Molokai to Oahu leg of the Olamau canoe race was postponed to Sunday, March 11 due to high winds and big seas and therefore SUPAM did the same for the long course, Kamalo to Kaunakakai.

However, the short course was inside the reef and in shallow water so the short course – three miles from One Ali`i fishpond to Kaunakakai Harbor – continued as scheduled. The wind was howling and for the kids that entered this was quite the adventure.…

Paddlers Inn to Get an Addition

Paddlers Inn will be getting an addition of a permanent roof over the lanai dining area and a landscaped park lot later this year. Construction is awaiting approval of permits.

General Manager Earl Gordon has directed the launch of the new Paddlers Inn. The project was made possible by the support of the island community for the reopen of Paddlers and the new Texas barbeque food format. The delicioussmoke house barbeque has been created with Leon and Blanche Howe bringing years of experience from their Las Vegas restaurant.

Paddlers Inn will go on to fulfill the promise of bringing excellent food and a local watering hole for the community.…

Organic Initiative Funding Available

Federal funding is available for organic farmers, and now is your chance to benefit from this program. Offered under the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a division of the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Organic Initiative provides a wide array of conservation practices specifically designed for organic production. Practices will help the selected applicants meet many requirements of their USDA Organic System Plans and stay in compliance with USDA’s National Organic Program.

Pitching a Homerun for Youth

The County of Maui Parks and Recreation will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition for Molokai youth. The event will take place on March 31 at the Kaunakakai Little League Ball Park at 9 a.m.

Pitch, Hit & Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

Competitors are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game®.…
