Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages, The Berry Company, Hawaii Food Banks and Local Schools, Work to Collect Directories for Recycling

Students around the state are competing in an annual event to recycle the most telephone directories with the goal of surpassing last year’s recycling totals and winning cash prizes. The Think Yellow, Go Green program is put on by Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages in conjunction with its sales agent, The Berry Company, LLC. The companies team up with schools on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai for the program, set to run April 25 through May 25.…

Ocean Resources Management Meeting

Add your input to a new state ocean resources management plan during a listening session on Molokai, to be held May 30, at the Mitchell Pauole Center. An open house will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a formal presentation at 6:30.

The State of Hawaii Office of Planning Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program is inviting coastal and ocean users, as well as other stakeholders and interested individuals, to the state-wide series of listening sessions as it begins the Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan (ORMP) update.

The ORMP takes a place-based approach to management of ocean resources in the islands, taking into account recognition of the ecological connections between land and sea, the link between human activities and impacts on the environment, and the need for improved collaboration and stewardship in natural resources governance.…

Kualapu`u School Receives $2.75M for Improvements

Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced the release of $34.5 million in Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) for education, health services and communications projects statewide. As part of those funds, Kualapu`u School will receive $2,750,000 for construction of a new water line.

Rep. Mele Carroll and Sen. J. Kalani English who represent East Maui, the islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kaho`olawe and Molokini worked together with their colleagues and appropriated $2,750,000 in the budget.

“Kualapu`u Elementary School has needed to improve its infrastructure,” said Rep. Carroll. “The $2,750,000 would cover design and construction for a new water line and/or provisions for fire suppression; ground and site improvements and equipment are a major step in our continued school maintenance initiatives.”…

Undersea Cable Impacts and Costs Too Severe, Says National Grid

A high-voltage undersea transmission cable planned for Massachusetts has been killed by one of the nation’s major utilities because it would be a “high-risk” installation, too expensive to construct, with too many severe environmental impacts and too difficult to maintain.

The National Grid, which serves much of New England and New York State, released the findings of its Cable Feasibility Study this week. The cable would have been built using the latest technology called horizontal direct drilling – the same technology planned for sections of the interisland cable proposed by Governor Neil Abercrombie and HECO, and now being considered by the Hawaii Legislature.…

This year’s Molokai Ka Hula Piko festival will be held Thursday May 3 to Saturday May 5. This year’s theme celebrates our kupuna and is “Lei `ia Molokai ke aloha hulu mamo,” or “Molokai wreath in the love of the ancestors.” We honor our kupuna both living and of old who have perpetuated and preserved the traditions and knowledge of our culture that we have today.

Thursday’s festivities include two on-site excursions and an evening lecture. Friday we will be showing a documentary film titled “The Hidden,” featuring the late Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua, with a short Q&A to follow.…

The Hawaiian Home Lands Agriculture Extension Program will host a Molokai Swine Production Clinic/Tour on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop is open to producers who currently produce swine or who are interested in learning more about selection and management.

Special guest will be Dr. Halina Zaleski who serves as the UH CTAHR Swine Production/Management & Reproductive Physiology Specialist. Dr. Zaleski specializes in swine production management, including artificial insemination, livestock waste management, herd health and biosecurity, and swine welfare. Dr. Zaleski is a certified trainer for the National Pork Board’s Pork Quality Assurance Plus Program.…

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Molokai at Molokai Drugs on May 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events or who have accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

“This is a nation-wide effort to dispose of medications correctly so it protects our oceans and water systems and keeps drugs from getting into the hands of people it doesn’t belong to,” said Molokai Drugs Pharmacist Kelly Go. “It gives Molokai residents the opportunity to hand over their unused or expired medications correctly.”…

International Fellowship Seeking Applications

Become a part of a fellowship program designed to develop emerging leaders in Hawaii to become significant community contributors in natural, cultural and land stewardship. Applications for Kamehameha Schools’ First Nations’ Futures Program (FNFP) are available now through June 15.

FNFP is an international collaboration between Kamehameha Schools, Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu of New Zealand, Stanford University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The objective of the program is to bridge western academic and corporate philosophies with traditional First Nations’ philosophies to develop successful leaders.

A one-year commitment is required, which involves six to 10 weeks of programming including a three-day orientation, a two-week leadership development institute at Stanford University, an `oiwi leadership `aha (gathering) and a research project in Hawaii.…

Guzman to host “Talk Story” on Molokai

Maui County Council candidate for Kahului, Don Guzman will be hosting a “Talk Story” meeting on the island of Molokai this Thursday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at 260 Kokio St. Ranch Camp, Kaunakakai. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is invited.

Guzman is looking forward to meeting with the residents of Molokai, talk about his campaign, and hear their ideas on how county government can be improved.

Guzman is a former deputy prosecutor for the County of Maui and runs a small general practice law firm. He also served on Congresswoman Mazie Hirono’s staff as the Maui Field Representative and was a legislative aide in the Hawaii State House of Representatives.…

Molokai Student Winners in Poster Contest

Kilohana Elementary School Kindergartener Kiara Lima took first place in her division in the county-wide Department of Water Supply’s third annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. The contest drew 543 entries from public, private and home schools around Maui County. Kualapu`u School’s Carly Dudoit also placed third in the Kindergarten division.

The goal of the contest was to educate Maui Nui’s youth on the importance of water conservation and to encourage them to take an active role in ensuring the sustainability of our islands’ water supply. This year’s theme was “Malama I Ka Wai,” or to take care of the water.…
