Land Conservation Program Seeks Applicants

DLNR News Release

If you have an agency or non-profit land conservation organization that could use from funding for its efforts, this program may be for you. The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ (DLNR) Legacy Land Conservation Program (LLCP) is seeking applicants for grants from the State Land Conservation Fund to fund the protection, through acquisition, of lands having value as a resource to the state.

The Legacy Land Conservation Program provides an annual source of funding for the acquisition and conservation of watersheds; coastal areas, beaches, and ocean access; habitat protection; cultural and historic sites; recreational and public hunting areas; parks; natural areas; agricultural production; and open spaces and scenic resources.

Molokai Students Enter UH Medical School

Two students from Molokai are among 66 new students selected to enter the John A. Burns School of Medicine Class of 2015. The students, chosen from more than 1,600 applicants, received the short white coats that mark them as physicians in training during a ceremony last Friday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel.

Molokai’s Kaimana Chow graduated from Kamehameha Schools and is a recent graduate of the UH Imi Ho`ola Post-Baccalaureate Program, a year-long intensive study for students from culturally, socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The second Molokai student, Dayton Wong, attended Molokai High Intermediate School before college.

PUC Requires HECO to Reopen Renewable Energy Bids

HONOLULU – In a July 14, 2011 Decision and Order, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) required Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) to restart within 90 days the bidding process for renewable energy generation that would have come from a 200 MW Molokai wind project. The decision also allows the Castle & Cooke portion of the Big Wind project on Lanai to proceed.

Monsanto Molokai Earns ‘Top Safety’ Award

Monsanto Molokai Earns ‘Top Safety’ AwardMonsanto Hawaii’s Molokai farm received the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA (OSHA) top safety designation, the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star.

 In Hawaii, the VPP is also known as “Hana Po’okela” (excellent work), and is administered by the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations under OSHA.

 The program recognizes employers who meet exemplary standards in workplace safety and health. Nationally, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of companies accomplishes a Voluntary Protection Program.

 Monsanto is the first company on Molokai to become a VPP Star site, and the only agricultural company in the state with a VPP certification. Monsanto Hawaii’s Maui operations received its VPP designation in 2006.

 “Gaining the VPP certification is an extremely rigorous and lengthy process that requires everyone to be thoroughly committed to safety in the workplace,” said Ray Foster, Monsanto Molokai’s farm manager. “It’s not easy to become a VPP Star, so I commend all of our employees for this exceptional achievement.”

 Achieving the VPP Star designation is a multi-year effort, involving an extensive series of safety audits, inspections, employee training programs, meticulous record-keeping, trends analysis, improvements to the workplace and visits by OSHA inspectors.

Molokai Culinary Center News Release

Danish pastries for 24 cents? Cookies four cents each? Dinner for about a buck?  Don Hill and the Molokai Culinary Center can show you how. Hill, a long-time resident of the island and well-known local chef, has just begun a new non-profit cooking school.

The school is aimed at several target groups. The first are homemakers and caregivers, especially those on tight budgets, food stamps and WIC. The school will teach them how to get the most nutrition for their money, including how to shop.

Students can also learn from the school.  Young children can learn about nutrition, especially the vital role played by fruits and vegetables.  Older students will learn to cook, and even to earn a living from this skill.

The Molokai Humane Society (MoHS) is seeking qualified applicants for its full-time Executive Director position. Applicants must have at least four years nonprofit employment experience with references, successful grant writing and fundraising experience, at least two years of board volunteer experience and staff/volunteer management experience.

The Executive Director's functions will be to implement and execute the strategic goals and objectives of the organization work closely with the board president to enable the board to fulfill its governance function and to give direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization's philosophy, mission, strategy, long range and annual goals and objectives.

Hawaiian Sovereignty Gathering

Hui, hui to all! This is a kahea to all residents of Molokai Nui a Hina. There will be a general meeting for anyone and everyone wanting to gain information and enlightenment about ea, or sovereignty, on July 9 at the QLCC conference room, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The focus will be about the Reinstated Hawaiian Government (RHG), and the speaker, Henry Noa, will present background information. RHG was incorporated in March 1999, and Noa will share some of the progressive steps and evens that have since occurred, and present plans for the immediate future. Citizens of RHG will be present to answer and share their experiences.

Emergency Mortgage Assistance Available

Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation News Release

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers an Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP), of which 130 homeowners in Hawaii may be assisted with a 0 percent interest, forgivable loan.

EHLP provides emergency mortgage assistance to homeowners who are temporarily and involuntarily unemployed or underemployed due to the economy, or have a medical condition and are at risk of foreclosure.  The forgivable loan is up to $50,000 that pays past-due mortgage payments, as well as a portion of the homeowner's mortgage payment for up to 24 months.  Homeowners will receive counseling before and during the loan period.

Rate Increase for Water

The Department of Water Supply (DWS) would like to remind its customers that water rates will increase by an average of 5.5 percent effective July 1, 2011. The rate increase should generate approximately $2.9 million in additional revenues, which will be necessary to offset increases in electrical expenses, debt service, and operations and maintenance expenditures. In addition, the balance of additional revenues will be used to fund capital replacement projects. The County Council approved the rates during the fiscal year 2012 budget approval period.

The new monthly rates, per 1,000 gallons, are as follows: 0-5,000 $1.75; 5,001-15,000 $3.20; over 15,000 $4.60; agriculture less than 15,000 $1.05; and non-potable $1.05.

More Grants for Farmers

U.S. Department of Agriculture News Release

Local, independent agriculture producers, farmers and ranchers, as well as cooperatives, are encouraged to apply for economic assistance grants through the Value-Added Producer Grant Program (VAPG).

VAPGs may be used for feasibility studies or business plans, marketing value-added agricultural products and for farm-based renewable energy projects. Value-added products are created when a producer increases the consumer value of an agricultural commodity in the production or processing stage.
