Community Health Center Moves to New Location

MCHC News Release

Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) made the big move into their newly renovated Oceanside facility Sept. 16.  Staff and patients alike are excited to have the expanded space to better serve our community. 
 
The renovation of the former Pau Hana Inn property, however, is far from complete.  Two more phases to the project remain, including the renovation of the smaller buildings, pool rehabilitation, landscaping, and parking lot expansion.

“We’re in and that’s huge, but we still have some work ahead of us,” said Desiree Puhi, MCHC executive director.
 
Board President Rosie Davis stated, “It was so exciting to see everything come together as planned. The campus came to life right before my eyes.”

Coffees of Hawaii Closes Espresso Bar

Coffees of Hawaii, LLC (COH), based in Kualapu`u, Molokai, will be winding down its food and beverage services at its Kualapu`u Plantation Espresso Bar beginning Oct.1. The Molokai airport location will remain open seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will continue to serve their famous Mocha Mamas at the airport. The Blue Monkey Gift Shop at the COH Plantation will remain open and will continue to sell the COH retail coffee brands. Na Ohana Ho Aloha will also continue to play every Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Plantation.

Cut Back Energy Costs

Kanu Hawaii is pleased to announce the start of the Molokai Home Energy Monitor Program, a new energy pilot project intended to help Molokai renters and homeowners understand and manage their energy use.

The project will invite 100 Molokai households to receive a free whole-house energy monitor that displays real-time, minute-to-minute energy consumption and cost data via a table-stop display about the size of a cell phone.  The display shows up-to-the minute dollar costs for all electricity use in the home, from "phantom" draw from electronics to opening the fridge door or taking a hot shower. As appliances are turned on and off, the monitor shows the changing cost.

Become a Voice in the Reinstated Nation

Share mana`o and become educated on the Kingdom of Hawaii, also referred to as the Reinstated Hawaiian Nation. Register to vote in the upcoming election. We need more mana`o and ike so we can shape what the government will be like. Meetings are held every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Mitchell Pauole Center. This is also an opportunity for those who want to become participants or citizens of the nation, to start the process. All are welcome to attend and register to vote. The time has come for us to stand up for our basic human right called sovereignty in Hawaii, and especially on Molokai. This effort is supported by Hui Kane.

Get Your State ID

Need a State ID? Your chance is coming up. State ID personnel will be at the Kaunakakai Elementary School to process applications for State ID cards on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $10 for senior citizens 65 years and older, and $15 for all others, payable in cash only. State ID cards will be processed and mailed to applicants within 10 business days.

Priority will be given to applicants with completed application forms and required certified documents. Applications without these documents cannot be processed.

• New applicants must provide at a minimum an original social security card and a
certified copy of their birth certificate (or resident alien card, if applicable).

Local Vendors Invited to Showcase at Mainland Show

Are you a local vendor who wants to market your products nationally? This is your chance. Maui County is looking to showcase Hawaii-made products and cultural crafts at the Philadelphia International Flower Show, held from March 4 to 11, 2012.  The theme of the flower show this year is “Hawai`i, Islands of Aloha.”

The Maui County Office of Economic Development (OED) has announced that it has purchased ten booths at the show, which is the largest fresh flower and products show in North America. Show organizers have offered vendors from all counties in Hawaii a “Hawai`i Market Place.” Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Maui Visitor’s Bureau will also be participating in the show to promote Hawaii and Maui County.

Agriculture Transportation Reimbursement Program Ends Sept. 9

Agriculture producers exporting crops have until Friday, Sept. 9 to apply for reimbursements covering transportation costs.  Authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill, the Reimbursement Transportation Cost Payment Program for Geographically Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers (RTCP) provides payments intended to offset a portion of the costs of transporting agricultural inputs and products over long distances. The program assists farmers and ranchers in Hawaii, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands and Republic of Palau.

Science Education Grant Available

Applications are now being accepted for the Monsanto Hawaii Science Education Fund. This Monsanto Fund grant program is open to public schools serving students at the intermediate, high school and college levels on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Molokai.

Established in 2005, the fund helps provide Hawaii public schools with programs, tools, supplies and equipment to enhance science education, and encourage today’s students to consider a future career in the sciences. To date, the program has awarded more than $115,000 to public schools throughout the state.

Concert to Celebrate 25 Years

For more than 25 years, The Molokai Dispatch has been bringing you Molokai news, Molokai style – and now we’re bringing you an awesome family-friendly concert to celebrate!

Molokai-born music sensation Sashamon will perform at Mahana Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 10. Bring your own blankets, beach chairs and beer, and make yourself comfortable while enjoying some of Hawaii’s best jams.

Located at the new Mahana Gardens nursery, expect a beautiful tropical setting that lends itself to good times. With discount admission for kids ($5 for kids under 13, and free for children under 5), families are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $15 for adults. Proceeds support the island’s only free newspaper.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and the show goes until midnight. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Sodas and ono BBQ plates will be available for sale, as well as exclusive commemorative Dispatch T-shirts. Drawings and prizes will be held throughout the evening – must be present to win!
