CFL Bulb Recycling Protocol

Blue Planet & Sust `aina ble Molokai News Release

Over the past two years, Molokai residents who have participated in the “Go Green and Carbon Clean” program organized by Blue Planet Foundation and Sust `aina ble Molokai have been benefiting from the energy savings of highly efficient compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs, which use 75 percent less electricity than incandescent bulbs.

The nearly 40,000 bulbs installed in Molokai homes today represent an important first step in moving the island toward energy self-sufficiency. The project’s success was made possible by the collaborative efforts of students, teachers, businesses, and community leaders.

Blue Planet Foundation and Sust `aina ble Molokai want to ensure that the community is aware of the proper usage and disposal recommendations for CFLs.…

Molokai Math Day

Molokai High School’s Math Department, in partnership with Aka`ula School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, announces the Fourth Annual Molokai Math Day, to be held this Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lanikeha Center. This year’s Molokai Math Day will showcase more than 25 interactive, hands-on stations for students of all ages, from 3 to 103 years old. Participants will explore a variety of Common Core standards-based activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

These range from solving numeric and geometric puzzles to predicting, observing, measuring and collecting data. Stations will be manned by a mix of Molokai High and Aka`ula School students who are partnered with graduate students from the UH Manoa Math Department.…

County Offers Molokai Counseling Sessions

In light of the recent tragedies faced by Molokai families, the County of Maui wants to offer support. Counselor Mark Nowicki and county staff will be available on Friday, April 12 at the Mitchell Pauole Center from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to talk with groups or individuals about how these events have affected them. This opportunity is open to everyone from elementary school students to families and friends of county employees.

“We’ve been getting feedback from county employees who are deeply affected and are concerned for others, and we would like to help” said Karin Phaneuf, administrative officer for the Department of Public Works.…

Lady Farmers Take Weekend Series

The Molokai High School Lady Farmers Softball Team split a pair of games two weeks ago with the Lady Dragons from Hana and then won the series by taking the tiebreaker.

Amanda Venegas-Makaiwi went the distance for Molokai in the opener and picked up the win in an 11-5 victory.  Venegas-Makaiwi gave up five hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.  She walked six and hit one Hana batter.

A misplayed fly ball put the Lady Dragons up by a run in the top of the first but the Farmers took advantage of four Hana errors to score four runs without the benefit of a hit. …

Tonight’s DLNR Meeting on Wildlife Rule Amendment

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will host a public hearing tonight to receive testimony on proposed amendments to Hawaii Administrative Rules, Title 13, Subtitle 5, Part 2, Chapter 124, “Indigenous Wildlife, Endangered and Threatened Wildlife, and Introduced Wild Birds.”

The primary purpose of the proposed amendments is to prohibit and deter the transport and release of introduced wildlife. Introduced species can impact Hawaii’s ecosystems and economy by introducing harmful predation and competition to indigenous species, damaging watersheds, spreading pathogens and diseases, and harming agriculture.

“The movement of live, introduced wildlife poses direct threats to our native ecosystems, and the proposed amendments will help prevent harm to our natural resources and economy,” said William J.…

Molokai High Artists Earn District Honors

High school students through Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District competed in an arts competition sponsored by the district’s congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard. All three Molokai High School students who were among 16 finalists received honors in the contest, Gabbard announced last week. MHS’ Kierstyn Esteron earned third place, while she and fellow MHS students Rizpah Torres-Umi and Eliana Kalilikane-Garces won the “People’s Choice” contest on Gabbard’s Facebook page.

Eighty contest entries were received from high school students throughout the district. Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.…

Molokai Boxer Named Regional Junior Olympic Champion

The 2013 Hawaii State Regional Junior Olympic Boxing Championships were March 16 and 17 at Palolo Gym. On the first day of the competition, Molokai Southside Boxing Club’s 13 year-old Kekaiomalu Adachi weighed in at 110 pounds and fought hard in three one-minute rounds, coming up short in points against 14-year-old Matthew Perez of BoxFit808. Later, 16-year-old Hunter Manaba weighed in at 141 pounds, defeating 15 year-old Charles Naone of Pearlside Boxing Club in a non-tournament but sanctioned match. Hunter advanced to the finals and will represent Team Hawaii in the upcoming National Junior Olympics.

On day two, 15-year-old Michaiah Soares weighed in at 154 pounds and fought three tough two-minute rounds against Waipahu’s seasoned15-year-old Kekoa Balasi; with only a few seconds left in round three, the contest was stopped.…

Moms on a Mission – Molokai News Release

Every Saturday during the month of March, thousands of individuals across Hawaii, have been marching to express their love for the land, the ocean, and their desire to protect them from genetically modified organisms (GMO) chemical testing and farming. Participants have included families with their children, local farmers, and advocates for food safety. Marches have already been held in Hale`iwa, Oahu (March 2), Kauai (March 9), Hawaii Island (March 16), and Maui (March 23) and the final march will take place here on Molokai on Saturday, March 30.

Supported by Hawaii SEED, Moms on a Mission – Molokai, Hawaii GMO Justice Coalition, and Aloha `Aina, the Molokai march will focus on moving forward for a safer and healthier today and tomorrow for our keiki.…

Chamber of Commerce Offers Scholarship

Molokai Chamber of Commerce will award two scholarships of $500 each to Molokai High School and University of Hawaii Maui College Molokai Campus students who are in good standing this year and will attend an accredited college or University to pursue a post-secondary education in business or related studies.

The deadline to submit completed applications is April 15.

5K Race Results — 3.9.13

Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

Rain clouds parted this weekend for the second race in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle schools 5K series.  Racing under cool, wet road conditions, MHS basketball standout Kaimana Kahale pulled away from MMS honor student Kaina Adolpho shortly after the mid-point turnaround.  The two runners finished first in their respective divisions with times of 21:25 and 22:18.  Winning first in the elementary school division was first-time contender Bucky James Torres who had an impressive debut, running 26:16 for the 3.1 mile course.

For the women, the duel continued between Jessie Ford and Sue Forbes, with Sue attributing her win to foregoing libations and an early night’s sleep.…
