Tobacco Documentary to Screen on Molokai Saturday

Tobacco education in Hawaii is getting added inspiration with special screenings of the documentary film “Addiction Incorporated,” a lauded documentary about the duplicity of the tobacco industry. The film is showing around Hawaii this week, including at Kulana Oiwi on Saturday, Nov. 10. The showings are in preparation for the nation-wide anti-smoking campaign on Nov. 15, the Great American Smokeout, when smokers are asked to stop smoking for at least one day.

The documentary film has won critical acclaim for its riveting, true story of the tobacco industry’s lies and its attempt to silence the scientist who blew the whistle on them and testified at the Congressional hearing.…

In 2011, Hawaii’s youth ranked second highest in the nation for high school students who have made a suicide plan, and highest in the nation for middle school students who have made a suicide plan.  Native Hawaiians are at higher risk than other students. As a community, what can we do to better understand the risks facing these youth? And, more importantly, what are our resources?

High Tech Maui News Release

Creating works of art from all types of media including pottery and jewelry, the artists at Molokai Arts Center (MAC) have been busy since the Center’s opening in March. Now everyone is excited as they choose one or two of their favorite pieces to display in the First Annual MAC Art Show to be held from Nov. 4 through 16 at the Molokai Public Library and continuing in the Ike Lihi Gallery the Molokai Arts Center until December 8.

The Molokai community will have an opportunity to view a small sample of the original and creative work completed over the first full year of operation of the MAC by many of the volunteer artists that have helped to make it a success.…

Monsanto Fund Donates $20,000 for Molokai Watershed Protection

The Monsanto Fund awarded a $20,000 grant to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Hawaii for watershed protection at Kamakou Preserve on Molokai. Since 2006, the Monsanto Fund has contributed a total of $130,000 to TNC’s protection and restoration efforts of critical watershed and fragile ecosystems on Molokai.

Located high in the mountains of East Molokai, the 2,774-acre Kamakou Preserve is a rainforest like no other on the planet. This magnificent natural treasure not only shelters hundreds of native plants and animals, but also serves as an important source of water for the island and its people.

TNC’s work at Kamakou Preserve, in collaboration with the public and private landowners of the East Molokai Watershed Partnership, is focused on invasive animal and weed control.…

Natural Honey Challenge Open to Beekeepers

The third annual Hawaiian Natural Honey Challenge (HNHC) will be held in conjunction with the Hilo Harvest Festival on Saturday Nov. 10, in downtown Hilo, Hawaii.  This year’s Hilo Harvest Festival is dedicated to honeybees and beekeeping.  Beekeepers from throughout the state of Hawaii are encouraged to submit entries of their favorite liquid, solid, and/or comb honeys for judging at this event.

The deadline for submissions to the Challenge is Friday, Oct. 26.  The requirements to be considered a Hawaiian Natural Honey include samples must be collected and bottled by the contestant from apiaries located in the state of Hawaii, no heat may be used in the extracting or bottling process, no additives, seeding or flavoring may be used and honey should not be processed in any way such as “creaming,” “spinning,” “churning,” or other manipulations.…

Goat and Sheep Workshop to Be Held

The 2012 Hawaii Goat and Sheep Association Workshop will be held on Nov. 9 and 10 at Kahua Ranch on Hawaii Island.  This year, the workshop will focus on Grazing Management for Healthy and Productive Pastures (with Charley Orchard of LandEKG), and Animal and Herd Health Management (with Dr. Liz Hamilton of Veterinary Associates).

Molokai goat and sheep producers are encouraged to attend if possible. The number of meat and dairy goats on the island is steadily increasing.  Production, coupled with the drought the last couple years, makes it very important to learn about parasite prevention and control.  …

Monday is Voter Registration Deadline

The Office of Elections and the city/county clerks remind the public that the last day for new voters to register to vote in the general election is Monday, Oct. 8.

Completed voter registration forms must be turned in to the appropriate city/county clerk by 4:30 p.m. Applicants who choose to mail their voter registration form are urged to have it postmarked by Saturday, Oct. 6.

Now Is the Time to Tell Government What You Want

From now until Oct. 9, Hawaii residents have a unique chance to tell the federal government what kind of energy projects we want on our islands. This is the Hawaii Clean Energy Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement, or PEIS. In plain English, this means the feds are writing guidelines based on input from all of us. The more questions we ask, the more comments we make, the more our state will have to plan ahead, protect our resources and scenery, and pick projects we might be able to afford.
