Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

The first 5K in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle School series of five 5K’s went off without a hitch this Saturday with over 40 participants – racers, runners and walkers – taking on the three-mile challenge from Coffees of Hawai`i to Ala Ekahi and back.

Taking first place overall was Molokai High School track standout Akona Adolpho, winning in a time of 20:07.  Second and third places went to fellow MHS teammates: Hunter Manaba with a time of 21:50 and Grayson Aldridge with a time of 22:08.  In the women’s open division, Sue Forbes and Jesse Ford continued their three-year duel with Sue managing to outlast her longtime rival and friend. …

Research Team Discovers Existence of Hawaii Sign Language

A research group based in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa announced this morning that they have confirmed the existence of a previously undocumented language in Hawai‘i called Hawai‘i Sign Language (HSL). This is the first time since the 1930’s that a previously unknown language, either spoken or signed, has been documented in the U.S., and it could be the last of America’s undiscovered languages.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation at UH Mānoa.

HSL, the indigenous language of Deaf people in Hawai‘i, is one of only two known surviving sign languages in the United States.…

An Evening with the Galliard String Quartet

The Galliard String Quartet, considered Hawaii’s premier string quartet, will perform a free concert March 5 in the Kaunakakai Elementary School Cafeteria. The students from the Molokai String and Brass program, under the direction of Bob Underwood, will open for the Honolulu-based quartet. The Molokai students will also work with the quartet individually in master classes while the musicians are on Molokai.

The Galliard String Quartet performs programs that include the works of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert and Brahms. Music of the masters is the Galliard’s forte, but the group’s repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes, romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music and more.…

The Molokai Bowhunters Club wishes everyone a Happy New Year. We plan to keep everyone informed of our club activities throughout the year. Our range is located in Kalae, just past Coffees of Hawaii on the left, heading up to Kalaupapa. The range consists of 10 acres of official targets, uphill & downhill challenges and practice targets.

The national FoodCorps is recruiting service members throughout Hawai‘i who are passionate about healthy food, farms and kids to help connect our keiki to real food and help them grow up healthy. Sust `aina ble Molokai, the grassroots community organization that educates keiki to bring back Molokai’s legacy of `aina momona, will be a service site for two members.

FoodCorps, a national organization addressing childhood obesity and food insecurity in underserved communities, operates in 12 states and will add Hawai`i, California and New Jersey this year. The Kohala Center will be the Hawai`i host site.

FoodCorps is accepting applications for its third class of service members and is seeking to hire ten service members in Hawai‘i.…

Value-added and specialty foods consultant Lou Cooperhouse will present his “Food Business Basics: Getting Started and Finding Your Niche in the Specialty Foods Business” workshop March 15 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Lanikeha Community Center in Ho‘olehua, Molokai.

The workshop is designed for farmers seeking to develop their raw product into a value-added product that they can bring to markets, entrepreneurs and restraunteurs interested in diversifying their revenue streams with specialty food products and established producers looking to take their food business to the next level.

Cooperhouse will deliver his three-hour “Food Business Basics” workshops, and then Nicole Milne, agriculture business specialist at the Kohala Center, will present two one-hour sessions focused on financial resources available to Hawai`i farmers as well as strategies for marketing agricultural products.…

Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety, with assistance from and in partnership with various local agencies and businesses, has established a Smoke Alarm Installation Program. The goal of the program is to provide smoke alarms and install them in the homes of the highest risk memebers of the community in Maui County at no cost to residence.

How does the program work?

We will use an application process to determine eligibility. If applicants are eligible, they will be called to arrange an installation day for our trained teams of installers and educators to perform the in-home inspection, education and installation of the alarms.…

5k Race Series Raises Funds for Schools

Molokai Middle School is joining forces with Kualapu’u Charter School to host five 5K FUN-raising races this spring. Race dates are the following Saturdays: March 2, 9 and 16, and April 6 and 13. All 5K races will begin at 8 a.m. at Coffee’s of Hawaii.

The five races in the series will be used as qualifying races for each school’s team that will compete in the Honolulu 5K for Kids Sunday, April 28. School teams will be chosen based upon each runner’s best three out of five race results. Total combined time in three races will be used to determine selection.…
