Molokai residents know all too well about high gas prices.  The island has some of the highest in the nation.  Electric vehicles – cars that can plug in to the electricity grid for some or all of their power – promise relief from these high costs.  Plus, they offer a sustainable and energy-independent way to get around the island, reinforcing the island ethic of caring for the environment.

At the end of the day, when Cooke Memorial Pool closes at 4:30 p.m., the Molokai Chapter of Maui Dolphins Swim Club (MDSC) gets in the water.  From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, swimmers from 5 years old and up enjoy private, structured pool time with coaching.

Membership ranges from Kindergarten to Masters-age swimmers, all with the opportunity to compete in sanctioned USA Swimming meets.  This fall is a great time to join – school is in session, and healthy students and parents both perform better throughout the day.  Family membership comes with discounted rates; discounted insurance rates are available.…

Joseph Kahee, Pa`oneakai Lee-Namakaeha and Ryan Mahiai, employees of the Solid Waste Facility of Kalaupapa National Historical Park (KNHP), were awarded one of 33 grants across the country in the amount of $12,500. The funding was through the Horace M. Albright-Conrad L. Wirth Grant Program at the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks. The Albright Wirth Grant Program supports a wide range of innovative projects that give National Park Service employees the opportunity to pursue personal and professional training experiences.

This group grant was used to implement a comprehensive “greening” plan for KNHP. One of the core components of the plan was to lay the groundwork for an integrated solid waste management system in Kalaupapa.…

MECO Scheduled Kaluakoi Outages

Maui Electric Company (MECO) is scheduling an electricity outage for the Kaluakoi subdivision in west Molokai this Friday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The planned outage is part of an improvement project to install new equipment in that area.

As part of this project, periodic outages will be scheduled through October to replace several switchgears. A combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment, switchgears provide continued reliability of the electrical supply.

ART 113 Intro to Drawing is being offered at University of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC) Molokai campus this fall semester. It is structured as a beginning level class and focused on exploring a variety of media from charcoal to marker, pencil to pastel, ink to conte crayon.  You will discover more techniques and styles for how to draw what you see three dimensionally as well as how to express your feelings, culture and knowledge visually. Most importantly, you will learn how to see as an artist and realize that everyone can learn to draw.

MHS Student Receives Monsanto Scholarship

Monsanto Hawaii News Release

Sixteen Hawaii students were selected to receive the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship or Hawaii Agricultural Scholarship, collectively earning a total of $20,000 to further their college educations. LesleyAnn Escobar of Molokai High School was one of ten students awarded $1,000 each for the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship. LesleyAnn plans to pursue a BS in Biology at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.

This award is open to students of all public and private high schools statewide who graduate in good standing and will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a post-secondary education in a discipline related to the life sciences.…

The County of Maui is soliciting proposals for tourism programs on Maui, Molokai and Lanai for 2014 under the County Product Enrichment Program (CPEP). The intent of the program is to diversify and enrich Hawaii’s tourism product by developing new and enhancing existing community-based events, experiences, and projects related to the niches of agriculture, culture, education, nature, health and wellness, sports and technology. The program is supported through a partnership with the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA).

Molokai schools helped a statewide effort to collect nearly 40,000 pounds of outdates telephone directories for recycling during a month-long program called Think Yellow, Go Green. The program was initiated by Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages and its sales agent, The Berry Company, LLC, along with schools on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai. This year marked the fifth annual recycling drive.

The month-long environmental awareness program was driven by strong community support and invited the local schools to compete to collect the most outdated directories for recycling. The schools had the opportunity to win cash prizes for their students’ participation in the program, and award amounts varied depending on the school’s location.…
