Red Cross Hawaii Chapter News Release

The American Red Cross is recruiting disaster services volunteers on Molokai. The first step for all new disaster volunteers is to take a series of basic disaster classes, which will be offered on Molokai. All Disaster Services training is provided free of charge.

New volunteer candidates must register for, and attend, the entire series. We are
offering the new volunteer training series of four courses in your community on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Oct. 11-13. All courses will be held at the Home Pumehana Senior Center meeting room.

Oceanic Franchise Hearing

As part of the renewal process for Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s Maui County cable TV franchise, a series of public hearings are being held to gather community input. The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is continuing with the process of Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s renewal of its Maui County cable TV franchise. The DCCA will be holding public hearings on Maui, Molokai and Lanai to offer customers and community members the opportunity to submit testimony on Oceanic’s application.

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will present an exhibition of new works by local artist Kathleen Mendes from Oct. 5-18 at the He `Ike Lihi Showroom. Called “Inspired and Fired by Kathleen Mendes,” the exhibit will feature ceramic pieces composed with a variety of techniques, including slab, coil, and wheel.

When Molokai’s master potter Dan Bennett opened his studio doors in 2007 to those eager to explore ceramics, Mendes had the opportunity to pick up a ball of clay and turn it into a useful object.  Since then she has been working with this medium, discovering all the exciting possibilities it holds for the artist. …

Molokai Clean Energy Initiative: What’s Next

Last week, we offered an update on the Molokai Clean Energy Initiative (MCEI), a forum for communities, organizations and other stakeholders to meet together, share ideas, and envision an affordable clean energy future for everybody. This is the conclusion of that update.

I Aloha Molokai (IAM) President Kanoho Helm saw early on that energy planning is closely linked with emergency preparedness. Without built-in redundancy and back up, no system is likely to function in a crisis. Several MCEI presenters alerted us to the fact that state disaster plans are incomplete, and that some statewide response sequences have not been established or tested.…

Grant-Writing Workshop

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Regional Grants Cooperative will be offering a grant-writing workshop on Molokai. The workshop will help interested residents develop quality submittals to respond to NOAA grant solicitations.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center Activity Room, and lunch will be provided.

You will learn how to identify funding opportunities, understand the NOAA grant process, how NOAA evaluates grants and tips and resources to improve your submittals.

After five productive meetings the time has come to bring the general public up to date on the Molokai Clean Energy Initiative, or MCEI. These monthly meetings are held at Kulana Oiwi here on Molokai. They are sponsored by I Aloha Molokai (IAM) and chaired by IAM President Kanohowailuku Helm. Our goal is to provide a forum for communities, organizations and other stakeholders to meet together, share ideas, and envision an affordable clean energy future for everybody.

IAM is a nonprofit, volunteer community organization, originally formed to oppose the Big Wind turbines slated for Molokai’s west end. Two years ago, Molokai Ranch approached us to discuss other issues of concern to the community.…

Maui Adult Day Care Centers and the Maui County Office on Aging invite the public to a free caregiver workshop, The Affordable Care Act: Health Coverage in 2014.  Speaker Kanoelani Davis, a Hi`i Ola Program Specialist with the Hawaii Health Connector will present on topics including what is the Affordable Care Act, how it will affect Medicaid/Medicare and common benefits offered in option plans. She will also offer information on the new health insurance marketplaces, what is the “Connector” and how they can help, and how one will qualify for no- or low-cost insurance coverage.…

AARP to Tour Fishpond

The Molokai AARP has scheduled a bus trip for Tuesday, Sept. 24 to the  Ka Honua Momona Fishpond.  Lunch will be provided for a charge of $10.  Anyone wishing to go, please call Frances Feeter, 553-9857, for more information.  Reservations for lunch must be made by Thursday, Sept. 19.    The bus will leave from Mitchell Pauole Center at 9 a.m.  Lunch fees will be collected prior to departure.

Youth Water Activities

Youth in Motion News Release

Youth In Motion will be starting up on Monday, Sept. 9 with a 10-week program of activities. They include American Red Cross swimming and Stand Up Paddling.  The primary age group is 11 to 15 years old but 10 year olds may join if they can show commitment and are willing to listen and learn. Younger children and older youth/adults who choose to come or help for the Stand Up Paddling will be part of the Steward and Shepherd program and can still sign up. An adult must be present for anyone under 10 years old.…
