The fifth annual Hawaii STEM Conference was held on Maui on May 2-3, bringing together over local students, educators and industry professionals with some of the most innovative technology companies in the world. This year, 300 students representing 30 intermediate and high schools across the islands participated,including Molokai Middle and High Hawaiian Immersion school STEMworks students.

Since it began in 2009, the Hawaii STEM Conference has grown in popularity and star quality.  The event continues to attract national partners and sponsorships from top tech companies like Google and National Geographic Society, as well as Apple for Education, SketchUp, Chevron and ESRI.…

World-Renowned Biology Prof to Speak on Pesticides

A state-wide speaking tour of world-renowned University of California Berkeley Professor of Integrative Biology Dr. Tyrone Hayes will include Molokai on May 16. Paul Towers from Pesticide Action Network will be speaking as well, presenting an overview of pesticide use nationally and internationally and the significant role that Hawaii plays as ground zero for open-air pesticide experimentation.

The Molokai event will be held on Friday, May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Molokai Community Health Center. Other special guests will include Lorrin Pang, M.D. of the Hawaii Department of Health and Jeri Di Pietro, president of Hawaii SEED.…

First ‘Made In Maui County’ Festival Accepting Applications

The inaugural “Made in Maui County” Festival will be held November 7 and 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development announced. Approximately 6,000 to 8,000 residents and visitors are anticipated to attend the event, which will showcase a wide variety of made-in-Maui County products, including foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and more in one location.

Planning for the first-ever festival is in full swing with vendor applications and sponsorship forms now being accepted on the event’s official website, MadeInMauiCountyFestival.com. The event is being presented by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development in partnership with the Maui Chamber of Commerce.…

Kualapu`u School’s 5K Team Races on Oahu

The Kualapu`u School 5K team raced against a strong field of Oahu runners in the Honolulu 5K for Kids held on Sunday, April 27. Keahe Ross was the top finisher from Molokai finishing in 25:01 for third place in her age group.  The next three Kualapu`u School runners ran the course together finishing within 23 seconds of each other.  First in the pack of Kualapu`u runners was Namaka Ross finishing in a time of 28:37, good for 10th in his age division.  Close on his heels came Kapili`ula Naehu in a time of 28:59, good for seventh in the girl’s 11-12s. …

Harlem Ambassadors Tour Coming To Molokai

We are pleased to announce that the Molokai Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Harlem Ambassadors on Tuesday May 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Barn at Molokai High School. Hoops and hijinks are on their way as our very own local challengers, the Molokai All-Stars, take on the Harlem Ambassadors in a comedy basketball show the whole family will enjoy.

The Harlem Ambassadors offer a unique brand of Harlem-style basketball, featuring high-flying slam dunks, dazzling ball-handling tricks, hilarious comedy routines, music, dancing and games for the kids.

A hardy group of Green Guerillas (Seed Savers over age 65) braved the rain and winds for a tour of the Sustainable Molokai Food Forest under the direction of Fred Richardson. Fred explained the design of the forest, the water flow and catchment, terracing, plantings, composting and future goals. An area of land that had been left without management where the soil was running off onto a road at the bottom of the hill has been turned into a beautiful forest with hard wood trees, fruit trees, construction grade bamboo and vegetables. A community work day is held the fourth Saturday of every month and seeds, cuttings and plants are available as they are produced in the forest.…

Ikehu Molokai Project Update

As most Molokai residents know, the Ikehu Molokai project has been proposed to convert the island’s electricity to 100 percent renewable energy.  The project aims to bring down the cost of electricity, stabilize the grid, make the grid able to absorb more rooftop solar systems, make Molokai self-sufficient in energy and more in control of its energy future, and create jobs.  The Ikehu Molokai project will produce electricity for Molokai only, with no connection to a cable or export to other islands.

The Ikehu Molokai team has been working on the design and financing of the project. …

Yamamoto Finalist in School Leadership Award

Principal Joe Yamamoto of Maunaloa Elementary on Molokai was named as one of the 13 finalists in the 2014 Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Awards, which recognizes outstanding Hawaii public school principals for their efforts to provide high-quality learning opportunities for their students.  Each finalist received a $1,000 personal cash award and a Certificate of Recognition at a presentation ceremony held on March 29.

The finalists will by vying for the $25,000 (a $10,000 personal cash award and $15,000 towards a school project of his or her choice) grand prize award at the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation dinner on May 1 in Honolulu. …

Molokai and Lanai High Athletics Fundraiser a Homerun

Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii News Release

The Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii’s (DACH) second annual benefit fundraiser, “Cheers for Molokai and Lanai High,” held on Jan. 29 outside Murphy’s Bar and Grill, raised $131,500 to benefit student athletes from both schools, and donations are still coming in.

DACH Board of Directors President Keith Amemiya said the outpouring of support from across the state was emotional and overwhelming. Of the proceeds, $85,500 went to Molokai High and $46,000 will benefit Lanai High’s athletic program.

DACH arrived at the financial allocation with the agreement of Molokai High and Lanai High athletic administrators based on the respective numbers of student-athletes served and certain donations that were earmarked by sponsors.…
