Child and Family Services News Release

Are you dealing with difficulties due to current or former sex assault or abuse? Help is here. The Molokai Sexual Assault Center provides information and referrals, supportive advocacy, clinical therapy, case management, support groups and other services for youth, survivors, kupuna and children.

Call Child and Family Services at 553-5529. Our office is located at 107 Ala Malama, Room A and B in Kaunakakai. Office walk-ins are welcome. Regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on holidays. Our Sex Assault hotline is open 24 hours a day.

Our hotline offers confidential advocacy support and referrals.…

Federal Funds for Conservation Ag

USDA News Release

As a Molokai farmer or rancher, you may be eligible for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) most common Farm Bill Programs. These include the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program, Agricultural Management Assistance Program, and Conservation Stewardship Program. Contact the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Ho`olehua to find out if you are eligible for this funding. Applications for the first ranking period of 2014 are due at NRCS offices by close of business on Jan. 17.

“We are encouraging farmers and ranchers to utilize the federal funding available to help improve conservation on private land,” said Shirley Nakamura, NRCS Assistant Director for Programs.…

I Aloha Molokai (IAM) regrets to announce the cancellation of our third Alternative Energy Festival, scheduled for Jan. 14. We had hoped once again to host vendors, speakers, and vigorous public discussion of energy options for our island and our state. Recent confidential negotiations between Molokai Ranch, California wind developer Princeton Energy, Maui County and Maui Electric, however, have cast doubt on our ability to keep the Festival as transparent and neutral as the previous two.

These negotiations concern a proposed 25 megawatt solar farm with pumped hydro backup, to be placed on Molokai Ranch land above and below Manila Camp.…

Once again during this holiday season, Hospice Hawaii Molokai is partnering with Bank of Hawaii to host a special Dove Memory Tree. You may honor the memory of a departed friend or loved one by writing their name on a paper dove, and hanging it from the tree. The County of Maui Office of Economic Development (OED) is coming to Molokai on Thursday, Dec. 12 to talk story about the programs they offer, but more importantly to talk story with Molokai to see how we can better serve the island.

Grateful for, awed and encouraged by Molokai’s tremendous response to her first children’s picture book, Marie Yamashita has published a second children’s book, “Tonbo’s Amazing Adventure.”

Tonbo, the little airplane at the Honolulu International Airport, sees huge jets thunder and roar off to faraway places in the world and wishes that he, too, could be a big jet like them. He gets his wish and goes off in search of a place no one has seen or heard of.

Amazing adventures follow. He lands in a magical place and is befriended by “wishers” like himself. A time comes when he longs to return home.…

Mobi PCS 3G Network Upgrade on Molokai

Mobi PCS has completed a 3G network upgrade on Molokai, significantly boosting performance of the company’s voice-and-data network.

Data download and browsing speeds are now more than 10 times faster. Voice-calling capacity during times of high usage has been doubled.

Molokai Power Outages Today

Maui Electric News Release

Shortly after 8 a.m. this morning, approximately 1200 Molokai customers in the East End and Kaluakoi lost power when two electrical lines came down in the Kaluakoi area. Electrical service was restored to East End by 8:40 a.m.

As of this time, about 60 customers in Kaluakoi remain without power as crews work to access and repair the lines which are located in difficult terrain. We estimate that power will be restored at about 2 p.m.

Maui Electric is looking into what caused the lines to come down. We sincerely appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we work to restore power.…
