Kualapu`u School 5K Race Series

Kualapu`u School News Release

Kualapu`u Charter School announces the first of six 5K fun-raising races to be held this Saturday, Feb. 8.  All interested runners, joggers and walkers are invited to come to Coffees of Hawaii this Saturday to race.  Registration begins at 8 a.m.  Event start time is 8:30 a.m. The $10 adult registration fee will be used to send a team of Kualapu`u School runners to Oahu for the Honolulu 5K for Kids, slated for April 27.  There is no entry fee for students.

The six races in the series will be used as qualifying races for Kualapu`u School’s six member team that competes on Oahu.…

`Aha Ho`okuku `Olelo

In celebration of Mahina Aloha `Olelo (Hawaiian Language Month), February, we will be hosting our first `Aha Ho`okuku `Olelo (Hawaiian Language Competition) on Molokai. This event will be held on Friday, Feb. 28 at Kulana `Oiwi Halau. It is open to all levels of Hawaiian Language speakers. There will be two categories: Ho`opa`ana`au (Memorized Verse) and Uluwale (Impromptu). You may choose to enter in just one category or both. Levels will be separated by grades for youth and by skill for adult entries.

Our theme, “He ali`i ka `aina, he kauwa ke kanaka,” honors our ali`i as well as our `aina of Molokai.…

Molokai Farmers’ Half-Court Shot for $10,000

Some lucky fan will win $10,000 if s/he can make a shot from the half-court at Molokai High School’s Barn.

The “Molokai Farmers’ half-court shot at $10,000” is a fundraiser for the Molokai High athletics department. One randomly chosen ticket owner (age 18 or older) will attempt the shot on Friday, Feb. 7, at halftime of the boys’ varsity game against St. Anthony School. The fundraiser is sponsored by Shirley Rawlins of Rawlins Chevron and David Mikami of Molokai Drugs.

Tickets are currently being sold at $5 each at Molokai General Store and Rawlins Chevron.…

There will be three meetings to accommodate customers across the island. Light refreshments will be served.

Documentary Featuring Challenges of Molokai High Athletics Airs This Weekend

“Going the Distance: The Journey of Molokai and Lanai High Sports,” a new documentary chronicling the unique, harsh challenges faced by students representing Molokai High School or Lanai High School in interscholastic athletics, airs on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. on KGMB and Sunday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. on KHNL. “Going the Distance” was filmed and produced by aio Hawaii and the Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii (DACH) with the broadcast support of Hawaii News Now.

Unlike other high school teams nationwide that simply board buses, every away game or tournament for Molokai and Lanai student-athletes means a bumpy ferry or small plane ride, often departing in the early morning, twelve hours or more before game time.…

On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the Molokai College Career Tour Club (MCCTC) will present Keola Beamer, internationally recognized Hawaiian slack-key guitar master and composer, in concert at the Molokai Community Health Center (Old Pau Hana Inn). There will be dinner, music, silent auction, Valentine’s treats, and more for couples and families. The doors for silent auction will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with entertainment by the MCCTC members and other performers followed by Keola Beamer’s concert at 8:30 p.m. Tickets including dinner cost $50 while the VIP tables cost $75 a seat. …

HI Businesses Support Molokai and Lanai Athletics

Proceeds from a fundraiser event called “Cheers for Molokai and Lanai High,” held on Oahu, will support student-athletes at Molokai High and Lanai High whose athletic departments annually face travel budget shortfalls. Held by Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii (DACH), a nonprofit founded in 2012 to advance sports programs of Hawaii’s public schools and support student athletes, the fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in front of Murphy’s Bar and Grill in downtown Honolulu.

In the current 2013-14 school year, Molokai High is underfunded by about $32,000, and Lanai High is often forced to travel with partial squads and offers a limited number of sports due to lack of funding and resources.…

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is pleased to announce Storytelling and an Exhibit of Paintings of Molokai by Donald Sunshine, FAIA, Professor Emeritus of Architecture, Virginia Tech, an award-winning architect, artist and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.   In addition to technical writing and 16 volumes of travel sketches, he previously authored a memoir, “Recollections of an Urban Refugee,” as well as three books about Molokai.   Professor Sunshine and his artist/collaborator wife live on their family farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and on the island of Molokai, where his latest books, “Life’s Moments,”  and a book of poetry, “Here ‘N There,” were written.…

Together we can have a greater impact on improving the health of our neighbors and the island community we love.  That is the philosophy of a large group of health professionals and volunteers who will be on Molokai during the first week of February.    The purpose is to reduce preventable blindness and assist the community in identifying approaches and strategies which can lead to better health and longer, stronger, happier  lives.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year

We will be having a Chinese New Year Celebration and Historical Gun Exhibit at Shop2 / Mel Chung Gunsmith in Kaunakakai on Friday, Jan. 31 from noon to 6 p.m.

Our shop will be decorated to celebrate the coming “Year of the Horse,” which begins on Jan. 31.  Chinese snacks will be available for sample and for sale.  A historical gun exhibit will also be put on by Mel Chung – Gunsmith. The theme of the exhibit is “Chinese and other Military Mauser rifles.”   Under-aged children must be accompanied by an adult for safety reasons.

This event is being presented to perpetuate Chinese culture on Molokai.…
