Molokai Landfill to Pay Violation Fines

DOH News Release

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) and the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management have reached a settlement on two enforcement cases concerning solid waste violations at the Central Maui Municipal Solid Waste Landfill and the Molokai Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility. The combined settlement involves a cash penalty payment of $70,000 and a supplemental environmental project that is valued at not less than $70,000.

The proposed supplemental project is a household hazardous waste collection program for the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai to be conducted during fiscal year 2015 (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015).…

Distance Education at Molokai Campus

In addition to classes held at our Molokai campus, the University of Hawaii Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) offers a distance learning program with courses delivered through various technologies.

Online courses are taught completely online via the internet. Students access course material from their personal computers. Most online courses use Laulima, the course management and collaboration system for the University of Hawaii.  Some courses are taught for residents of the neighbor islands through Interactive Television (ITV), using classroom facilities provided by, University of Hawaii, Maui College and the University Education Centers at Molokai, Lanai, Hana and Lahaina. Students meet at the ITV receive sites to participate in classes. …

Wetland Classroom Goes High-Tech

The Monsanto Fund has awarded $8,000 to Nene O Molokai for its Wildlife Without Walls environmental educational program at the Koheo wetland. The funding will be used to purchase a laptop computer for field work at the wetland, enabling students to conduct onsite GIS (geographic information system) mapping of the on-going wetland restoration, and download water quality data collected with Pasco Probeware donated by the Center for Advanced Communications and Engineering at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Also included in the award is funding for the site’s operation and propagation supplies for the out-planting of native vegetation utilized culturally and agriculturally, and for endangered waterbird habitat enhancement.…

Athletic Mandatory Parent Meeting

Due to new policies for the Department of Education, Molokai High School (MHS) Athletic Department will conduct three parent athletic meetings during the sports seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) for school year 2014-15.

The fall season meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 30 at the Café from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The winter season meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at the MHS Library. The spring season meeting will be on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at the MHS Library. All meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The kolea, Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva), is revered in Hawaiian mythology as Koleamoku, a messenger of high chiefs, and was considered to be the embodiment of the god of healing. On their northern migration, Kolea may have aided ancient navigators with the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. Within a few weeks, the kolea will make a transoceanic southbound migration between breeding grounds in Alaska to wintering locales as far away as Madagascar. Recent research using light level dataloggers have tracked kolea at speeds from 36 to118 miles per hour, and with an average flight between Hawaii and Alaska taking 40 hours.…

Molokai Resident New Crop Assc. President

Recent Molokai resident Kirby Kester is the new president of the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association (HCIA), as well as Dow AgroSciences’ Hawaii R&D Leader.

With nearly 20 years’ experience in the seed industry on Kauai, Kester now resides on Molokai and serves as site Leader for Dow AgroSciences’ R&D Station on Molokai, as well as provides oversight for Kauai’s Seeds and Traits R&D program.

Kirby holds a M.S. of Agriculture degree from Iowa State University and a B.S. in Agronomy from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.  He has been a member of HCIA since 1995, and will serve a two-year term as president.…

Long Range Development Plan for College Campus

After years of effort, UH Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) has completed its Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) 2013, which was approved and received in June 2014.  The purpose of the LRDP is to guide the development of the Molokai Education Center to the year 2027, beginning with the transition from the existing two-acre campus and expanding to a five-acre campus utilizing the land to the west along the main road to Duke Maliu Regional Park.

The LRDP includes engaging visual aids on accordion style fold-outs to provide the reader with a clear idea of how the future campus might look. …
