$9.7M for DHHL

Sen. Brian Schatz News Release

The Hawaii Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) has been approved to receive a Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant (NHHBG) totaling $9.7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA). U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz announced these funds can be used for a variety of eligible affordable housing activities, including new construction, acquisition, modernization or rehabilitation of rental or owner­ occupied housing, housing services, crime prevention, safety, or model activities as described in the recipient’s Native Hawaiian Housing Plan.

DHHL says it will use the $9.7 million for projects in Kona and Keaukaha on Hawaii Island, Kalamaula on Molokai, Waimanalo on Oahu, and Anahola on Kauai. …

OHA Trustees to Hold Meetings on Molokai

Native Hawaiians on Molokai will get an opportunity to provide feedback to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) at a community forum as well as a regular meeting scheduled by the Board of Trustees.

The community meeting is designed for OHA officials to listen to concerns and highlight efforts to improve conditions within Hawaiian communities. Both meetings are open to the public.

The community meeting will be Wednesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Kulala `Oiwi Halau, while the Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday, June 19 at 9 a.m. at the same location.

Pre-K Program Offered

Kaunakakai School News Release

Starting this school year, nearly 20 public elementary schools around the state will be offering a prekindergarten program. As part of Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s vision to prepare as many four-year olds as possible for kindergarten, the Executive Office on Early Learning (EOEL) has been charged with developing this prekindergarten program in collaboration with the Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE). On Molokai, the selected site is Kaunakakai Elementary School.

PALS Offers Free Meals

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation announces that free meals for children will be available at all County PALS sites on Maui and Molokai through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Children do not have to be enrolled in the PALS program to take advantage of the free and nutritious meals this summer.

Mandatory Boater Ed Enforced in November

With less than six months to go before Hawaii’s new mandatory education law for boaters is to be enforced, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) would like to inform boaters that there is still ample time and multiple ways to become compliant.

Beginning Nov. 10, 2014, all individuals who operate a motorized vessel in Hawaii’s state waters must have taken a boating safety course and be able to show proof of certification. The rule applies to all boaters unless they and/or the vessels being used fall under one of the exemptions mentioned in the new rule.…

Molokai Keiki O Ke Kai and Friendly Isle United Fund present the 25th Annual drug and alcohol-free Keiki Surf Meet Series this summer. Held at Waialua Beach, Mana`e, the meets will be held on Saturdays, June 14, June 28 and July 12.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with heats starting at 10 a.m. Participation is $5 per meet per keiki, plus a one-time insurance fee of $5.

End of Isolation at Kalaupapa Commemoration

Hui Malama Makanalua News Release

This year, June 30 marks the 45th anniversary of the end of the isolation of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients at the Makanalua peninsula, commonly known as Kalaupapa. To observe this anniversary and honor those who were subject to the policy, local nonprofit Hui Malama Makanalua will be placing lei made from natural materials at every known burial site on the peninsula. This project, named Lei Hali`a O Kalaupapa(lei in remembrance of Kalaupapa), will be completed with the assistance of Kalaupapa National Park personnel.

From 1866 to 1969, nearly 8,000 individuals with Hansen’s disease were sent to live in “quarantine” on the peninsula.…
