Lanikeha Kitchen Changes Hands

MCSC News Release

After providing commercial kitchen space at the Lanikeha Center for more than a dozen years, the Molokai Community Service Council (MCSC) has turned the kitchen back over to Hawaiian Homes (DHHL). On Feb. 27, DHHL advised MCSC that they plan to transfer the kitchen license to the Homestead Farmers Alliance. The Hawaiian Homes Commission will be asked to approve this transfer at their April 21 meeting here on Molokai.

The kitchen began when community members decided to include it as a project in the 1998 federal Enterprise Community (EC) competition. After Molokai won an EC award, county, state, and federal agencies provided funding to help DHHL establish a kitchen in the newly-planned Lanikeha Center.…

Friends of Molokai High and Middle Schools Walk in Charity Walk

Calling all friends and alumni of Molokai High and Molokai Middle Schools!  Put on your walking shoes and help Friends of Molokai High and Middle Schools Foundation (FMHMSF) raise money during this year’s charity walk.

The Molokai Visitor Industry Charity Walk begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 3.  If you’re interested in helping FMHMSF raise money, please contact Ron or Camie Kimball, Lori Kaiama, Kuulei Pico, Kelley Dudoit, Bobo Alcon, Robert Ribao, or Lisa Takata for an official walker registration form.

It’s hard to believe Molokai High School (MHS) has been educating young minds for 75 years. MHS has transformed through the years — our kupuna remember raising swine and growing crops. Today still known as the Farmers, MHS continues to perpetuate its long standing motto.

In commemorating this wonderful achievement of 75 years, MHS will be celebrating its anniversary starting May 22-26 on campus the grounds. We’re creating a family fun-filled weekend for all to enjoy.

Registration on campus will be Thursday, May 22 from 8 a.m. till 2 p.m. Friday May 23 is also the commencement exercise of the graduating class of 2014, gymnasium doors to open at 4 p.m,…

Three-Year Business Training Continues

Our Native American Business Network returns to work with the Kuha`o Business Center and Native entrepreneurs as a part of their thee-year program to provide entrepreneurial training to the community on Molokai. Trainings are made possible by a grant provided by the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) and allows a local organization, Kuha`o Business Center, to partner with the Portland-based, national nonprofit to work with area citizens on business development initiatives three times per year. Molokai Battles Back Against Cancer

Relay for Life Molokai News Release

Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the 2014 American Cancer Society Relay for Life Molokai gets underway with teams of residents gathering on August 8 at 6 p.m.

Relay for Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at the Kaunakakai Ball Park with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening.  Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay, sporting chili plates/bowls, popcorn, glow sticks, and many more. …

Hawaii Meth Project Teen Advisory Council

The Hawaii Meth Project, a nonprofit organization that implements large-scale, research-based campaigns and community action programs to reduce methamphetamine use in the state, is seeking applications for its Teen Advisory Council for the 2014-2015 school year.

During their terms, Teen Advisory Council members will have the opportunity to lead and facilitate outreach in their schools and communities across the state. They will be charged with raising awareness about the importance of methamphetamine prevention, especially among Hawaii’s youth.

All high school students entering grades nine through 12 for the upcoming school year and attending public, private, and home schools statewide are encouraged to apply for one of 20 available positions on the council.…

This past Friday, March 14, Sust`ainable Molokai welcomed the FoodCorps Hawaii state team to Molokai. The team consists of eight service members, with five from Hawaii Island: Jane Lee serving at Kohala Elementary, Julia Nemoto at Mala`ai Garden, Jessica Sobocinski at Honaunau Elementary, Kalu Oyama at Na`alehu Elementary and Leina`ala Kealoha at Kua O Ka La Public Charter Schools. Additionally, Tasia Yamamura is serving at Ma`o farms on Oahu and here on Molokai, Lacey Phifer and Simon Mendes are our service members. The state fellow is Amelia Pedini, and our host site leader from the Kohala Center is Nancy Redfeather.…

Entrepreneurial Empowerment Workshops

A free, two-day workshop will teach business concepts for anyone starting up or running a small business. Held by RedWind and ONABEN hosted by Kuha`o Business Center, this small business development workshop will be provided in Kaunakakai at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) on Monday, April 7 and the Queen Lili`uokalani Children’s Center (QLCC) at Kulana Oiwi on Tuesday, April 8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Community Health Center Gets $500,000

Molokai Community Health Center will receive $500,000 in capital improvement grant funds, Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced last week.

Identified by the state Legislature, this grant will complete phase II of the Center’s capital improvement project that includes renovation of structures, an addition of a central deck, repaving the parking lot, installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant walkways, as well as irrigation and landscaping at its Oceanside Center in Kaunakakai.

“The Molokai Community Health Center serves approximately 3,000 of the island’s 7,200 total residents, which is more than 40 percent of its population.” Abercrombie said. “This project will expand and improve access to quality health care on the Friendly Isle.”…

Maui Electric Aerial Line Inspections Wednesday

Maui Electric Company will be using a helicopter to perform routine power line inspections throughout Molokai on Wednesday, March 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting.

Dates and location routes are subject to change due to weather. Routine aerial inspections of Maui Electric’s equipment, including electrical lines, poles and substations, are necessary to maintain stable and reliable electrical service for the Maui County community.
