Ka Ipu Kukui Program Accepting Applications

The Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows program recently completed its seventh year and is now seeking applicants from Molokai for the 2014-15 session. A Decisions Maui and Focus Maui Nui initiative, the program is a yearlong endeavor designed to promote and train community-identified future leaders of Maui County.

Interested applicants are welcome to talk story with Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows at the Paddler’s Inn on June 3 from 5to 8 p.m.

Since it began seven years ago, 85 fellows have completed the program, including 11 graduates who were honored during a commencement ceremony held on Wednesday, May 7, at the Kahili Golf Course in Waikapu.…

Harbor Ferry Terminal Project Completed

DOT News Release

A $9.1 million project to improve the Kaunakakai Harbor Gerry Terminal has been completed, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announced last week.

Passengers using the ferry from Kaunakakai Harbor, Molokai, to Lahaina Harbor, Maui, now have an upgraded and modernized facility with an expanded passenger waiting area, upgraded restroom facilities, and a larger parking lot that allows for better traffic flow.

“This project demonstrates my administration’s commitment to improving Hawaii’s infrastructure across all islands, and is a great example of state departments working together to complete projects,” said Gov.…

June is the only month that the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program is offered and MEO Molokai will be taking applications June 2-30, Monday through Fridays except on June 11.  We ask that if anyone is interested to please pick up a brochure that is posted in town or at MEO office at the end of Kolapa Place.

Please join Sust`ainable Molokai on Saturday, May 31 in a celebration of gardening and community as we begin the morning exploring our High School Permaculture Farm. Have a Project or Idea that Benefits Molokai?

It’s that time of year again when the Friend Isle United Fund (FIUF) accepts grant applications from community projects, schools and organizations. While a 501(c)(3) IRS tax exemption is not necessary,  the project requesting funds from FIUF must be nonprofit, and it must benefit the  Molokai community.  The deadline to apply for a grant is Wednesday, May 30.  In order to be eligible for consideration, proposals must be submitted to the Molokai Community Service Council (MCSC) by 5 p.m. via email, regular mail or hand delivery.

In 2013, FIUF (a community service program of MCSC) distributed grants to 25 local nonprofit programs and schools. …

Please join Sust`ainable Molokai on May 31 for our next community workday. Community workday is a chance for any interested community members to come out to our high school permaculture farm to put in a few hours of educational, rewarding labor, followed by a potluck lunch for all.

We try to prepare our meals around what is growing in the garden, and this next community workday will be a very special opportunity. We are bringing our Forno Bravo wood firing pizza oven to the permaculture site, and after work we will have a make-your-own pizza party. Bring whatever ingredients you wish to put on your pizza, we’ll be supplying the dough, and also feel free to pick fresh vegetables from our garden sites.…

 Molokai Resident Named ‘Outstanding Older American’

Eighty-three-year-old Molokai volunteer Kanee Wright was named one of two winners of the Maui County Office on Aging Outstanding Older American Awards. Wright and Maui’s 84-year-old Fred Ruge were honored at the 46th annual awards ceremony on May 6 at the Maui Beach Hotel. The two were chosen out of 10 nominees.

Wright is a volunteer at Hale Maha`olu’s Home Pumehana site in Kaunakakai, Molokai. She loves to help and lives up to her middle name of “Happy,” bringing a smile with her everywhere she goes. She loves to keep busy by cleaning Home Pumehana’s windows, screens, tables and chairs, as well as running errands for the kitchen, office and maintenance shop, and delivering parcels when she is not on the road delivering nutritious meals to the Friendly Isle’s frail, homebound seniors.…

Last year, Hui Malama o Mo`omomi hosted a successful `Ohana Lawai`a Camp. Thanks to our sponsors, Conservation International/Hawaii Fish Trust and Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development, we are once again hosting our second annual `Ohana Lawai`a Camp. The camp will be held on Friday, June 13 through Tuesday, June 17 at Mo`omomi Beach.

What makes our camp unique? We target the entire `ohana, requiring two generations but encouraging three or more generations to participate if possible. We feel that when more generations are included, families can share and learn from one another, and the knowledge and skills that are developed from camp will more likely continue to be practiced in the home when everyone shares the same beliefs.…

As a community service project in conjunction with Law Week in Hawaii, attorneys from the Senior Counsel Division of the Hawaii State Bar Association will be holding a free legal clinic to provide legal information to the people of Molokai.
