The Maui County Office of Economic Development Molokai Kuha`o Business Center along with MEO Business Development Center will partner with ONABEN-A Native American Business Network to present a series of business workshops on Thursday, Nov. 13. The workshops will be held at the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development Kuha`o Business Center which is at 2 Kamoi Street, Suite 600, Kaunakakai, HI, 96748.

The first workshop will occur from 12:30 to 2 p.m. April Lemly, ONABEN’s Marketing Coordinator, will lead an overview of web design basics for small businesses.

The second workshop will occur from 4 to 5:30 p.m.…

Strong Start for MMS Robotics

The 2014-2015 VEX IQ Robotics season has begun successfully with two regular season tournaments for Molokai Middle School (MMS) Robotics.

The first tournament was the 2014 VIV aio Maui Fair VEX IQ Tournament held on Oct. 4 at Baldwin High.  Ten teams from Maui County competed in the VEX IQ division, including both 434M and 434K teams from Molokai.  Team 434M Menehune Farmers won the Team Excellence Award and Trophy and qualified for states.  Team 434M members were Kaitlin DeRouin, Kodie Place, and Makani Davis.

The second tournament was the 2014 aio Hawaii VEX IQ Qualifying Tournament on Nov.…

Veterans Benefit Workshop

The Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) are hosting our second Veterans Affairs Benefits Workshop on Molokai on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Hale Mahaolu Home Pumehana in Kaunakakai from 9 to noon.  The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hopes to have two workshops a year on Molokai.

Several VA benefits personell will be at the workshop to provide information. These include the VA Honolulu Regional Office Director of Benefits, Tracey Betts, and her staff, Rommel Dasmarinas, benefits counselor; Richard McDonald, Vocational Rehab and Employment counselor; and others. They will offer information on topics like medical travel, loan guaranty, death benefits and any other veteran issues.…

Continuing Quest in Sexual Violence Prevention

The Consuelo Team of Molokai continues to do primary education on the prevention of sexual violence with an emphasis on prevention of child sexual abuse.  In September, we had a two-day training session with the Sexual Abuse Treatment Center facilitated by the Education Coordinator HaeOk Miller.  In lieu of our training, women from different on-island agencies were invited to have lunch on Sept. 5 with HaeOk.  The discussion included on how we all can collaborate as a community to protect our children against this prevalent but quiet issue.

On Oct. 16, Dr. Barry Coyne, state prison psychologist, had an opportunity to meet with both on-island agencies and community members discussing what happens to “sex offenders” and how they are rehabilitated back into the community. …

County of Maui News Release

Twelve businesses from Molokai have been selected to be among a 130 of Maui County’s top businesses at the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival. They are selling products certified as 51 percent or greater Made in Hawaii.

The 2014 event will be held Nov. 8 from 8:30 a.m. til 4:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.  Help the County of Maui – Office of Economic Development and Maui Chamber of Commerce, congratulate the following businesses.

GMO Moratorium Survey Results

Out of a total of 219 Molokai residents who participated in an online survey, 109, or 49.77 percent, are in support of a moratorium (temporary suspension) of all GE operations and practices within Maui County. The moratorium would last until an environmental and public health impact study is conducted and finds the proposed cultivation practices to be safe and harmless.  Of the total survey participants, 110, or 50.23 percent, were not in favor of this bill.

One of those in favor shared that, “because of their history of contamination, collusion, coercion and endless greed for capital and control, companies like Monsanto cannot be trusted, and therefore independent studies need to be conducted to insure these practices taking place on our island are safe for its inhabitants and future inhabitants.”…

The Hawaiian Language Immersion program at Molokai Middle School, `O Hina i ka Malama, is having a benefit concert and dinner on Friday, Nov. 7 at the Molokai Community Health Center (Old Pau Hana Inn) at 5 p.m., under the banyan tree.  Dinner tickets are $50 per person and our VIP tables are $1000.  We have a great lineup of entertainment starring our own Middle Schools students of `O Hina i ka Malama, Na Pua Ho`oheno, and guest artist Darren Benitez and friends.

Proceeds of the benefit concert and dinner, along with a silent auction that night will support our students to travel to Aotearoa, New Zealand. …

There will be a Farm Tax Workshop held Nov. 6, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Business Development Classroom.  Michael Holl will be the returning to Molokai to speak to farmers and ranchers about business taxes. This workshop will help you manage your labor, financial and legal risks. Holl, who is from Oahu, is an enrolled agent who is a federally-authorized tax practitioner, licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to negotiate with the IRS on behalf of taxpayers.

The Molokai Farm Tax Workshop is designed to enable farmers to lower their tax liabilities by better understanding business deductions, tax preparation, and record keeping to minimize taxes and the chances of an audit, business entities for your farm, how employment laws and independent contractor requirements affect your business, and special provisions in the tax code regarding farm income averaging to significantly lower taxes resulting from “bumper” crops.…

Community Plan Update

A public open house for the Molokai Community Plan Update will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kaunakakai Elementary School cafeteria.  The purpose of the open house is to present and review key information that will be used during the community plan update process. Because the event is organized as an open house, people can drop in at any time. There will be several displays that depict the planning process and schedule, summaries of previous workshops, and a description of key issues that the Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) will be addressing.…

Aha o Molokai and Malama Mo`omomi News Release

Hawaiians always had strict rules and regulations when it came to harvesting from the shoreline and ocean. The Kapu System was set up to protect the natural resources from misuse and to insure that the future generations had the same resources for them to survive.

Molokai’s shorelines, especially west Molokai, are dotted with fishing Ko`a and Ku`ula shrines.  The fisherman’s first catch was placed on these ahu to honor the gods of the ocean, family aumakua, and the great teacher of fishing, conservation and sharing… Ku`ula Kai.

Molokai is in the process of applying for a State Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) designation, which will help to protect Mo`omomi’s ocean and shoreline resources.  …
