Study Alternatives for New Electric Utility Model

County of Maui News Release

The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development announced today it has posted a Request for Proposals (RFP) to study the options available for a new electric utility model.

The $30,000 analysis is in response to the County’s concerns about the looming NextEra/Hawaiian Electric Industries merger before the Public Utilities Commission, and how it may affect area residents and businesses. The study will look at alternative forms of ownership and the alternative utility business models for Maui County’s electric utility company.

“We must look at our options, but to do that and have a constructive conversation about the matter we need more information,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa.…

Hawaii Farmers Have a Bright Future

UHMCM News Release

According to Gov. Ige’s Action Plan “Engineering Hawaii’s Future, “Agriculture is critical to self-sufficiency and food security.  Instead of continuing to import 90 percent of our food, we need to take steps to produce more food locally.  We are committed to making farming and local food production a thriving industry here in Hawaii.”

UH Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) offers certificates and degrees in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management.  The Molokai farm includes a 5,000 square foot greenhouse, orchards, and vegetable fields.  In Fall 2015, UHMCM will be offering Agriculture classes in Sustainable Crop Production (propagation planting, fertilization, irrigation, harvesting and marketing) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m.…

Proposals Sought for Community Grants

County of Maui News Release

The County of Maui Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program is seeking funding proposals for a second round of proposals for a total of $1.7 million for Fund Year 2015 (July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016).

The deadline to submit proposals is 3 p.m. on Friday, May 8. Proposals may be submitted “ATTN. 2015 CDBG Application” and delivered to the CDBG Program Office at 251 Napua Street in Wailuku, or mailed (must be received by the deadline) to Office of the Mayor, CDBG Program Office, 200 S. High Street, Wailuku, HI  96793.

Earlier this year the CDBG program office submitted six proposed projects to the County Council, which rejected the following proposals:

Ka Hale A Ke Ola, $653,869 for rehabilitation and improvements to its homeless shelter; County of Maui, $650,000 for a Maui Fire Dept.…

The Berry Company, LLC, proud publisher of the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages, is partnering with schools on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai to launch “Think Yellow, Go Green,” the company’s annual environmental awareness and recycling campaign. The seventh annual program kicked off on Earth Day, April 22, through the end of May, and runs concurrent to the 2015 Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages directory delivery on the neighbor islands.

Local schools on each island will compete to collect the most outdated telephone directories, which will keep the directories out of landfills through recycling. The schools have the opportunity to win cash prizes for their students’ participation in the program, and award amounts vary based on the school’s location.…

French Classes at Kualapu`u

The Kualapu`u Charter School is again this year offering classes in beginning French twice weekly, as part of the after school enrichment program.  Mlle. Marine Malet from Toulouse, France, will be teaching the popular course to students grades K through six, until May 21.

Last year, Mlle. Christelle Raoul from Brittany taught French language and culture for two quarters at Kualapu’u School, where students learned songs, stories, and how to make their own French crepes.

“The French classes are an opportunity to bring an international flavor to the school,” said school principal Lydia Trinidad. “Also, the chocolate crepes are always a hit with the students and staff.”…

New Veterinarian

Molokai Humane Society News Release

The Molokai Humane Society is happy to announce that we have a new veterinarian.  Over the last month and a half, some of you may have been fortunate enough to have met Dr. Susan Baillie as she has gotten a feel for our little clinic and the island of Molokai.  We are excited to add such a great asset to our team!

Dr. Baillie is originally from a small farming community in South Africa, and later moved to California with her family.  She was a preschool teacher for eight years, until she discovered her passion for animals, and graduated from University of California-Davis with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2005. …
