School Receives Peace Grant

Kualapu`u Public Conversion Charter School has received a $50,000 grant from the “Pillars of Peace Hawaii” fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.  The grant will sustain and improve Kualapu`u School’s implementation of “Getting Along Together,” a school-wide social and emotional learning program that helps children develop empathy and compassion, manage their behavior, focus their thinking, build positive social relationships, and understand and cope with their feelings in ways that support learning and life success.  The funding will support training for the entire school staff including EAs and custodians, four parent workshops, and a one-year part-time administrative position to support the Student Services Team.…

Mokulele to Give Passengers Lei

Mokulele Airlines will celebrate King Kamehameha Day by lei’ing the first 500 passengers who island hop on June 11 from all nine airport stations.

Sign Up For New Emergency Alerts

Now that the 2015 Pacific Hurricane Season has officially kicked off with the formation of Tropical Storm Andres off the Coast of Mexico last week, Maui County residents are urged to sign up for “Maka`ala,” the Maui County Civil Defense’s new Emergency Alert System.

We need to be prepared for this storm and the several other storm systems that are predicted to form this year.

“Maka`ala translated from Hawaiian means to be alert, aware and vigilant and we want residents to be just that,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “We have had a number of tropical storms, hurricanes, tsunamis and other emergency events hit Maui County in recent years, and Maka`ala notifications will allow people to watch out for the next emergency event and hopefully enable them to stay out of harm’s way.”…

In Native Hawaiian tradition, it is common for natural elements to symbolize body forms of ancestors.  The natural element will usually have characteristics that are reminiscent of the ancestor represented.  This year’s Molokai Ka Hula Piko T-shirts will be available for purchase on Saturday, June 6 at this year’s Ka Hula Piko celebration at Lanikeha Community Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This year’s design depicts kinolau, or body forms, representative of Laka and `Olohe.  It symbolizes the foundation and commitment of their given kuleana to malama all that they were entrusted with.

Nonprofit Receives OHA Grant to Restore Fishponds

Ka Honua Momona (KHM), a Molokai nonprofit focused on sustainability mauka a makai (from the mountains to the sea), has recently been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to restore two Hawaiian fishponds, Ali`i and Kaloko`eli.

The greater goal of the project is to return momona (health and abundance) to the land and people of Molokai through the community-based restoration of two ancient Hawaiian fishponds.

Ali`i and Kaloko`eli, located just past Kaunakakai Town, are approximately 30 acres each and were originally built in the 15th century. KHM holds a license for both fishponds, as well as 1.5 acres adjacent to Ali`i Fishpond, from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.…

Tyson Pactol First to Earn Malama Aina Degree

After serving in the U.S. military and earning the privileges of the GI Bill, Molokai boy Tyson Pactol returned home and utilized the opportunity to attend college.  Back in the fall of 2011, UH Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) offered an Associate in Technical Studies (ATS) Degree called Cultural and Natural Resource Management (Malama Aina).

At that time, Tyson was working with The Nature Conservancy on Molokai.  With natural resource management being his field of interest, Tyson pursued the ATS Malama Aina degree.  In fall 2014, Tyson successfully finished the degree.  He is the first Molokai resident to earn this Associate. …

Bully Free Unity Pledge

Our Families Against Bullying (FAB) Project Bully Free youth classes that took place March 25 through May 27 at the Molokai Youth Center (MYC) is asking support from our youths and community. We have a large unity pledge banner available at the MYC for everyone to come out and sign, to pledge their support against bullying. The goal is to get 100 signatures by Aug. 31 to untie together as a community to end bullying in our schools.

We are very excited and hope that you all will take the time to come out and support our children of Molokai.…

Community Plan Workshops

County of Maui Planning Department News Release

The Molokai Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) will be holding meetings on June 3 and June 4 to discuss the ongoing update of the island’s Community Plan. The June 3 meeting will focus on Chapter 5, Economic Development, and the June 4 meeting will cover Chapter 6, Land Use and Housing and Chapter 7, Community Design.

Both meetings will be held at the Lanikeha Community Center. The June 3 Economic Development Workshop begins at 3:30 p.m. and the June 4 Land Use, Housing and Community Design Workshop starts at 9:30 a.m.

The meeting will begin with presentations and discussion on the specific topics to provide background information to the CPAC and the public. …

Still looking for something for your child to do this summer? Molokai CORAL offers a free summer program for grades Kindergarten through 12th that runs from June 9 to July 10. Molokai CORAL, which stands for Creating Opportunities for Rigorous Academic Learning, seeks to develop high quality education programs that increase the academic achievement and learning readiness in reading, science, technology, engineering, math, and improves student knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture and language. This program is possible through the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools funded by the United States Department of Education Native Hawaiian Education Act and sponsored by Aloha Productions,  LLC,  in  partnership with Molokai High School.…

OHA Awards $7.4M To 27 Projects

The Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiians Affairs voted to award $7.4 million in grants to 27 community-based projects to improve conditions for Native Hawaiians. Almost 4,400 Native Hawaiians are expected to directly benefit from the projects addressing OHA priorities such as battling obesity, improving middle and high school test scores and increasing housing stability.

In addition, thousands more are expected to indirectly benefit from projects to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and to manage Hawaiian resources sustainably. The grants will fund OHA priorities over a two-year period beginning July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2017. The 27 grantees were selected from 149 proposals that were submitted to OHA.…
