UH Maui College News Release

Prospective students interested in community health can take advantage of two new short-term certificate programs launching this fall at the University of Hawaii Maui College. The certificates can be earned in one or two semesters, with class schedules designed for participants already balancing work and family obligations.

The new Community Health Worker/Health Navigator 1 Certificate of Competence requires 15 credits, and will allow participants to finish in less than a year. New distance learning options will be also be available for Molokai, Lanai, Hana, and Lahaina.

Community health workers (CHWs) in Maui County hold job titles that include outreach specialist, wellness navigator, program assistant and health aide.…

Grant Supports Youth Training in Sustainable Ag

Sust`ainable Molokai News Release

Sust`ainable Molokai (SM) recently received a $17,434 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the efforts of SM’s Molokai Agricultural Youth Leadership Development Program.

The Youth Leadership Program aims to train high school and college youth in sustainable agriculture and permaculture practices through an ongoing mentorship program. The mentees will gain knowledge in the areas of traditional Hawaiian agriculture, professional business skills, hands-on experience, and will be encouraged to find their own unique way to contribute to food sovereignty in their community while earning a stipend upon the completion of the program.…

Molokai Half-Marathon

Kualapu`u School News Release

Kualapu`u School is hosting Molokai’s first-ever half-marathon and relay on Saturday, Aug. 15. Start time is 7 a.m. at Papohaku Beach Park. Runners and walkers can choose to solo the 13.1-mile distance or compete as a relay team of three.

Relay leg distances are 4 miles, 4.7 miles, and 4.4 miles. Leg one is Papohaku to Dixie, let two is Dixie to Kulawai Loop to Papohaku and leg three is Papohaku to Pa Loa Loop to Papohaku.

Race entry fee is $30 for solo runners and $45 for teams ($15 per team member.) All entry fees go to expand Kualapu`u School Parent Involvement and Family Support at the school.…

Ariana Nadia Nash and Brandon W. Jones will be reading from their works in progress at Kalele Bookstore on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in a lively literary event cosponsored by Kalele Bookstore and the Molokai Arts Center (MAC).

Wine and the written word have gone hand in hand since before the time of Euripides, so bring a bottle of wine and/or a pupu dish to share and come lift a glass to the literary tradition.  Ariana will be reading new works of poetry and Brandon will be reading one of his short stories, with time at the end to ask them questions about their work. …

Traveling Memorial Wall

A smaller version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall will be visiting Molokai, and its creator is asking for our help. Janna Hoehn is a Maui resident and has dedicated herself to developing a traveling memorial, a portable model similar to the wall in Washington, D.C. Like its larger counterpart, it has all 58,307 names of the men and women killed in action in Vietnam. Janna will grace us with herself and her wall at the dedication of the new Molokai Veterans Center on Aug. 14. Janna travels all over our state and even California with the wall, going to schools and veteran events.…

Molokai Dolphins Swim Club News Release

The state meets are wrapped up, bringing the long course summer swim season to a close.  Congratulations to Kahale Naehu-Ramos, the first Molokai Dolphin to compete at the Junior Age Group State meet at the Veteran’s Memorial Aquatic Center in Waipahu, Oahu, July 26-27.

Now that school is back in session and fall is almost here, the short course winter season begins. Molokai Dolphins Swim Club returns to its fall schedule on Monday, Aug. 3.  Practices will be Monday through Thursday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with double practices held in the mornings twice weekly, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:45 to 7 a.m. …

Join Mo`omomi Beach Cleanup

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii News Release

For the second year in a row, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii (SCH) is hosting the Mo`omomi Beach Cleanup and Community Service Project on Molokai on Saturday, Aug. 1. Sponsored by Matson, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Parley for the Oceans, this cleanup removes harmful marine debris from one of the most remote beaches on Molokai. Mo`omomi Beach, a mix of rocky and sandy coastline on the island’s north shore, is the first stopping point in the main Hawaiian Islands for marine debris coming from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

“Each Hawaiian Island has issues with marine debris but Molokai gets hit extra hard due to its open geography towards the north,” says Kahi Pacarro, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii’s co-founder and executive director.…

Arts Center Poetry Workshop

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is excited to present “An Introduction to Poetry,” a two-day creative writing workshop taught by award-winning poet Ariana Nadia Nash.  The two-part course will take place on consecutive Saturdays, July 25 and Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a private residence in Kawela Plantation.  The cost will be $55 for the general public and $44 for MAC members.  The workshop enrollment fee includes catered lunches both days by Roshani Nash.

The course is intended to be a fun, no-pressure introduction to the basics of modern poetry. In the first class, students will learn fundamentals of craft, both as readers and writers, and in the second class, students will try their hands at writing poetry.…

Vet Center Grand Opening Next Month

The Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) board of directors held their monthly meeting last Wednesday. Vice Commander John “Longie” Dudoit announced that we have received our permanent certificate of occupancy from Maui County for the Veterans Center. It took eight years, is dated June 23, 2015 and is now framed on the wall at the Veterans Center for all to see.

With the certificate obtained, Commander Sam Makaiwi announced that the long-anticipated dedication and grand opening of the new space will take place on Friday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. All veterans and their families are cordially invited, as are the people of Molokai.…

Movie Night Raises Funds for Pavilion

Heart of Aloha Church News Release

Heart of Aloha Church invites the community to take part in a Free Family Movie Night on July 24 on their open air church property in Kualapu`u.  The featured movie is called “Little Boy” and is made possible through a partnership with Trinity Broadcasting Network.   Food booths will be open at 5:30 p.m. and will be selling popcorn, drinks, malasadas, and Chinese food plates with the movie following at 7:30 p.m.   Please bring your own mat, blanket, beach chair, etc. as these will not be provided.

Heart of Aloha is a non-denominational church located on the Island of Molokai and currently meets at Lanikeha Community Center in Hoolehua. …
