Keiki Vaccines Offered on Molokai

Last week, health care providers on Molokai began administering COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 5 to 11 following recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last Tuesday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued emergency use authorization for the Pfizer vaccine for children.

“The CDC reviewed the clinical data and determined the vaccine is safe,” said state Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char. “The Pfizer vaccine is effective in preventing severe illness and death. The vaccine will provide another important layer of protection in keeping our children and the entire community safe.”

Na Puʻuwai offers regularly scheduled COVID-19 vaccine clinics for those who individuals needing their first, second or booster Pfizer vaccine. Our remaining COVID-19 vaccine clinic dates this year are Nov. 19 and Dec. 10. 

COVID-19 vaccination is free to the public, available to those who are age 5+ and by appointment only (no walk-ins will be accepted).

Na Puʻuwai is now also offering the flu vaccine! You can make an appointment Monday through Friday. Walk-ins for the flu vaccine are accepted and welcomed.

Cases Decline, State Readies for Child Vaccines

Molokai COVID cases continue to slow as the island logged two new COVID cases on Oct. 18, marking the only positive tests in the past week. According to the Dept. of Health, nearly 73 percent of Molokai’s population has initiated COVID-19 vaccinations – or 4,566 residents – and just over 68 percent, or 4,315 residents, are fully vaccinated, as of last week.

Vaccine Mandate Concerns Voiced

A few dozen residents took to sign-holding in Kaunakakai last week to air concerns about recent vaccine mandates imposed on state and county employees, which also includes Dept. of Education teachers, as well as students wanting to participate in school athletics.

The island and state are in the midst of the largest spike in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, causing dire concern to health officials and leading to many workplace vaccine mandates in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. And though strongly urged by many community leaders and officials, getting vaccinated in still a personal choice, and some residents are standing up for the freedom to choose.…
