TV and Your Child

Column by Tutu and Me Traveling Preschool

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 2 should not watch any TV or videos. Children at this age need to be interacting with people and materials, rather than sitting passively watching TV. Children over 2 should also be engaged in play activities with adults and other children, but may watch a limited amount of TV. Choose educational programs for your child, such as “Sesame Street” or “Dora the Explorer,” and age-appropriate videos.

Children who watch too much TV tend to do worse in school, be more overweight, and learn behaviors from television.…

Opinion by Christopher Carey

When was the last time you thought about bicycles? Was it watching Carlo riding down from Kaunakakai Wharf, or a vague memory of keiki days?

Many of us dismiss bicycles as childhood relics, but gasoline prices continue to soar in Hawaii. Rather than casting stink-eye at Molokai Chevron as we pass, perhaps it’s time to do something more constructive about a real economic crisis that only continues to worsen each month.

Recently, three college students drove an old London taxi 32,500 miles around the world in about 14 months. Buying gasoline in a number of countries highlighted the fact that the United States has the cheapest gas in the world.…

Teas of Hawaii

Herbal tea made from the dried fruit of the coffee plant is a Molokai product that’s spread its wings over the past two years. Originally produced by Coffees of Hawaii (COH) in Kualapu`u, the business has now been sold as Teas of Hawaii to COH employee Jessie Ford, who initiated the product’s development on Molokai.

“Tea is a passion and has been a dream of mine since I discovered it in my early days of college. I am very excited for this new company and adventure,” said Ford in a COH press release last week.

Hospice Celebrates Life

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Tis the season, let us celebrate life.

At Hospice Hawaii Molokai we like to celebrate life with compassionate end-of-life care.

Join us Friday Dec. 9 or 16 between noon and 4 p.m. at Bank of Hawaii for our annual fundraiser. Celebrate life and help fill our Christmas tree with doves by making a gift to Hospice Hawaii Molokai in memory or in honor of your special loved one.

Life is a journey each of us makes. Along the way there are opportunities to make a difference as well as moments to cherish memories and honor loved ones. Making a difference in end-of- life care is Hospice Hawaii’s gift to Molokai and together with support from our community we can continue to bring hope, reduce fears, and impact lives.
