Health Practitioners Share ‘Talking Circle’

“Close your eyes,” began Molokai Kahupono Francis Wong.

Young and old, patient and practitioner followed suit and allowed Wong to guide them in an exercise to empty their minds and let go of their problems.

Wong explained that our emotions guide us throughout our day and it’s important to calm that emotion sometimes to prevent injury to yourself and others.

Hawaiians have long believed that thoughts and words can become a reality, manifesting in our daily lives and affecting those closest to us. Wong’s exercise was a lesson in meditation and ho`oponopono, a Hawaiian practice used to restore and maintain good relationships within a family or group.…

‘A`ole GMO’

The main streets of Kaunakakai were closed Saturday morning as people young and old marched through town, carrying signs and shouting protests aimed toward Monsanto and calling for clear labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Molokai activist Walter Ritte and Oahu resident Dustin Barca organized the series of rallies called March in March that took place across the islands throughout the month. The marches on Maui and Kauai had more than 2,000 participants each.

“This is equal to the other islands because in its own way, it’s making just as much noise and raising just as much awareness,” Barca said about the Molokai rally, which had about 200 marchers.…

Public Shoreline Management Meeting Friday

On Friday March 29, Good Friday, an important meeting is being called by the Pala`au Moku of the Aha Kiole O Molokai. A “Shoreline Management Plan” from Ilio Point to Pelekunu on the north shore of Molokai will be presented.

The plan gives management powers of the shoreline resources to the community. Rules are needed in order to preserve the resources so our children and their children will be able to have free fish, limu, opihi, he`e, lobster, crabs, etc.

Come and learn, and share your mana’o and help manage the Ho`olehua icebox. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.…

Moms on a Mission – Molokai News Release

Every Saturday during the month of March, thousands of individuals across Hawaii, have been marching to express their love for the land, the ocean, and their desire to protect them from genetically modified organisms (GMO) chemical testing and farming. Participants have included families with their children, local farmers, and advocates for food safety. Marches have already been held in Hale`iwa, Oahu (March 2), Kauai (March 9), Hawaii Island (March 16), and Maui (March 23) and the final march will take place here on Molokai on Saturday, March 30.

Supported by Hawaii SEED, Moms on a Mission – Molokai, Hawaii GMO Justice Coalition, and Aloha `Aina, the Molokai march will focus on moving forward for a safer and healthier today and tomorrow for our keiki.…

Farming in the Shade

Along Hua`ai Road in Ho`olehua, there’s a wooded area grown over with weeds and bushes. This area is disguised as a simple, unkempt forest, but within it lays a flourishing garden of fruits and vegetables, all growing in the shade.

Molokai resident Joe Kennedy is the man behind the food forest. He began planting crops there last March, and a year later he has healthy, productive plants that use each other for support and protection. Avocado, taro and spinach are just a few of Kennedy’s crops. He founded the forest based on the idea of permaculture, a conservation theory that reflects his own love for the earth and a desire to preserve the land for future generations.…

Les Misérables: A Reflection on Bullying

“Les Misérables,” the Hollywood musical, caused me to think, as all good art will do, about my own life and the human response. Written in 1862, a true classic suspends time to relate characters with modern concurrent issues. Each character is an archetype of how we choose to follow our own souls. The antagonist (Javert), obsessed with power and control over a man (Jean Valjean), containing power within which cannot be diminished or broken down. Sound familiar? “Les Misérables,” on screen now at this current time of American bullying culture rampant in our schools, institutions, families and personal lives.…

5K Race Results — 3.9.13

Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

Rain clouds parted this weekend for the second race in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle schools 5K series.  Racing under cool, wet road conditions, MHS basketball standout Kaimana Kahale pulled away from MMS honor student Kaina Adolpho shortly after the mid-point turnaround.  The two runners finished first in their respective divisions with times of 21:25 and 22:18.  Winning first in the elementary school division was first-time contender Bucky James Torres who had an impressive debut, running 26:16 for the 3.1 mile course.

For the women, the duel continued between Jessie Ford and Sue Forbes, with Sue attributing her win to foregoing libations and an early night’s sleep.…

Filmmaking for Peace

When Kaycie Kahalewai’s teachers and friends saw the movie she made, they cried as a girl facing severe bullying turns to self-harm. Kahalewai, a Molokai High School junior and class president, made the short firlm for a competition, shooting the video on Molokai and drawing from her own experiences to create a moving account of violence amongst youth.

It’s no surprise that a film made close to home hits close to home. Kahalewai addressed an issue that affects every high school student in one way or another. She was a victim of bullying herself and tapped into those emotions to make her video.…

Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

The first 5K in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle School series of five 5K’s went off without a hitch this Saturday with over 40 participants – racers, runners and walkers – taking on the three-mile challenge from Coffees of Hawai`i to Ala Ekahi and back.

Taking first place overall was Molokai High School track standout Akona Adolpho, winning in a time of 20:07.  Second and third places went to fellow MHS teammates: Hunter Manaba with a time of 21:50 and Grayson Aldridge with a time of 22:08.  In the women’s open division, Sue Forbes and Jesse Ford continued their three-year duel with Sue managing to outlast her longtime rival and friend. …
