Molokai Wind Farm

By Steve Morgan

A quick disclaimer – I currently do not represent a position of support or opposition in regard to the proposed wind farm. My only intention of this series is to help our community in getting a basic understanding of this project.

Why is the state actively seeking to build windmills on Molokai?
The urgency to build a wind farm on Molokai originates with State Bill HRS 269-92, which mandates that the state of Hawaii replace 40 percent of its oil consumption by the year 2030 with renewable energy. Mandated intervals also require a 10 percent reduction in oil consumption by 2010, which has been met. By 2015, renewable energy must reach the 15 percent level and by 2020 a 25 percent level must be reached.

Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism News Release

With Lanai’s wind farm taking a tentative step forward, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) are seeking public comment at meetings on Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Oahu regarding the Hawaii Interisland Renewable Energy Program (HIREP), and the Wind Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

A meeting will be held on Molokai on Feb. 3 at the Mitchell Pauole Center at 5:30 p.m.

The EIS reviews possible environmental impacts that may arise from wind energy program development under the HIREP and the range of reasonable options.

DBEDT Energy News Release

The first step in the long process of running an undersea electric cable between islands has begun. The State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) Energy Office has announced preparations for a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) for the Hawaii Interisland Renewable Energy Program (HIREP). The PEIS will examine the impacts of the development of up to 400 megawatts (MW) of wind energy on Maui County, the transmission of that energy to Oahu via an undersea cable and its integration into Oahu’s electrical grid.
