The Molokai High School Athletic Department is currently creating a list of qualified applicants for coaching positions in a number of sports. If interested please pick up a coaching application at the front office or Athletic Directors office in the Gym. The deadline to turn in applications for the 2015-2016 season is August 3, 2015. Na Pua No`eau Brings Youth Programs

Na Pua No‘eau, Center for Gifted and Talented Hawaiian Children, is pleased to announce that their Molokai office has been reopened after a slight intermission. Na Pua No‘eau Molokai has an array of planned programs coming up for the students of Molokai, Kindergarten through 12th grade in the next couple of months.

One in particular is an exciting five-day `Ai Pono workshop where the students focus on kalo and learn how to make a pohaku ku`i `ai. This workshop is open to students in grades seven through 12 and will take place from July 14-24. Players Test Skills in Football Showcase

Competing in one of two Hawaii eight-player football leagues, Molokai rarely gets the chance to test itself against neighbor island teams in a sport without a state championship. However, at a football showcase on Oahu from June 5-7, the Farmers got to rub shoulder pads with scores of the state’s best athletes and take tips from some of the nation’s top college coaches.

Maximum Exposure Camp, put on by Hawaii’s Gridiron Performance Academy, helps players hone fundamentals while connecting with college coaches. In its second time at the camp, Molokai brought nine players, the most out of any Maui Interscholastic League school.…

College Credit Program Success

Molokai High School (MHS) has started a new initiative called Early College High School (ECHS), a program designed to give high school students access to college courses to earn college credit while still attending high school.  Nineteen ECHS program sophomores and juniors start their first college course this summer on the University of Hawaii Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) campus.

The students earn dual credits, meaning they earn credit for high school and college with each course.  Potentially, students can graduate with up to 30 credits, or one year of college already completed!

Molokai Student Among 3 Scholarship Recipients

Josh Jerman Foundation News Release

The Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship program recently awarded three Maui County high school graduates scholarships of $1,000 each. This year’s recipients are Sarah Jenkins from Molokai High School, Marc Pader from Lanai High School and Ja`ie Victorine-Dyment from Hana High and Elementary School. In the fall, Jenkins will be attending Duke University, where she plans to study environmental engineering. Pader will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with plans to major in architecture. Victorine-Dyment will be attending the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, where she will pursue a degree in psychology.

“It is always an honor to get any type of recognition for hard work and dedication in accomplishing my personal and academic goals; however, I believe getting a scholarship is an investment in me as a person,” said Jenkins.…

New Zealand Study Tour for Educators

Nineteen educators participated in the Malama Honua New Zealand Study Tour coordinated by the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) and the Hawaii State Department of Education. The 10-day spring-recess tour allowed participants to meet up with the Polynesian Voyaging Society crew during the New Zealand leg of the Worldwide Voyage of the Hokule`a and Hikianalia, and to build networks and relationships with New Zealand educators around issues of global and local importance.

Two Molokai educators participated, Uluhani Wai`ale`ale from Kualapu`u School and `Iolani Kuoha from Molokai Middle School.

Participants shared teaching approaches based upon place, projects, and culture.…

School Receives Peace Grant

Kualapu`u Public Conversion Charter School has received a $50,000 grant from the “Pillars of Peace Hawaii” fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.  The grant will sustain and improve Kualapu`u School’s implementation of “Getting Along Together,” a school-wide social and emotional learning program that helps children develop empathy and compassion, manage their behavior, focus their thinking, build positive social relationships, and understand and cope with their feelings in ways that support learning and life success.  The funding will support training for the entire school staff including EAs and custodians, four parent workshops, and a one-year part-time administrative position to support the Student Services Team.…

Youth in Motion Takes on Ka`iwi Channel

The Maui Jim 40th Annual Molokai Challenge was held on Saturday, May 30 with an international fleet of paddlers racing Surf Ski’s OC1, Prone and SUP (Stand Up Paddle) from Kaluakoi, Molokai to Hawaii Kai, Oahu in this 32 mile race. Youth in Motion put a three-person SUP team together so that the kids could experience the channel as they lead up to their main event in July 2015.  The team consisted of 13-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai, 15-year-old Lara Claydon from Maui, whose Dad works with the Molokai Baptist Church, and Youth in Motion founder Clare Mawae.…
