Molokai Holds Hawai’s First Ever Robotics League

On Saturday, Oct. 24, STEM Robotics was proud to host the first Robotics League competition to ever take place in the State of Hawaii right here on Molokai. The Molokai VEX IQ League was hosted at Molokai Middle School with robotics teams from Molokai Middle (MMS), Akaula, Kaunakakai Elementary, and Kilohana Elementary.

Eleven on-island teams from Molokai schools attended the event. Molokai Middle had three teams that included last year’s State Champs Menehune Farmers and Kalo Farmers, with a newly added third team Na`iwa Warriors. Akaula had two teams, an elementary team Voyager 1 and a middle-school team Voyager 2.…

Maui Realtors Send Gifts for Molokai Schools

Realtors Association of Maui Community Foundation News Release

Students of five Molokai schools are sitting pretty and cool after a cooperative effort spearheaded by the Realtors Wishing Well program. Last month a shipping container full of resort furniture, supplies and new fans arrived at Kaunakakai Harbor thanks to the Realtors Association of Maui Community Foundation and kokua from other Maui residents.

According to Foundation’s founder and director, Sarah Sorenson, the Molokai initiative began in March when she was contacted by Randall Nelson, general contractor and site supervisor for Elements of Hospitality who was overseeing the renovation of the WorldMark Wyndham Resort in Kihei.…

Farmers Become First-Time Football Champs

Running through the tunnel at war Memorial Stadium in Kahului, Maui, is a young football player’s dream. Running through that tunnel and then winning in the championship game against an archrival is a Molokai football player’s dream come true.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the big stage, the Molokai Farmers football team won their first eight-man Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) championship by defeating Seabury Hall 55-16.

“We came out and scored on our first two possessions, then we lost our way a little bit at the end of the first quarter,” said Head Coach Mike Kahale. “But in the second quarter we played better and it’s how you respond to adversity.…

Runners Reach Season’s Finish Line

After posting their best times of the season at the league championships, Molokai cross country runners Keao Ross and Juaquin “Jake” Samaniego represented Molokai at the state championships last Saturday.

On Seabury Hall’s three-mile course, Ross finished 78th out of 200 in 18 minutes and 28.5 seconds, while his teammate Samaniego came in 105th, posting a time of 18:43.5, as reported by The Maui News.

Despite only traveling to a handful of meets this season due to limited funding, Molokai’s boys had strong showings when they did get the chance to compete. The Farmers finished in the top four of Division II teams at every meet they attended.…

Farmers Shoot Season Highs at States

Molokai’s boys all bested their league championship scores and shooter Keaa Davis reached her goal of competing at the state level at last week’s air riflery championships on Maui.

Out of 50 boys shooters, Molokai’s Josh Cabreros tied for 22nd with 512 points, Jershon Kaalekahi tied for 29th with 506 points and Cody Nip was 40th with 492 points. Davis finished 49th out of 60 girls shooters with 467 points.

“The main person who wanted to improve his score was Josh,” said air riflery coach Chinky Hubbard, after Cabreros was dissatisfied with his league score. “… [The boys] were super happy and stoked.…

Volleyball Closes Season in No. 3

It was a long week of volleyball for the Molokai High School Lady Farmers at the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Division II Championships at Seabury last week. On Tuesday, Molokai claimed the No. 3 seed for the MIL D-II tournament by beating Lanai 25-22, 25-16, 25-12. The Farmers and Pine Lasses both finished the regular season at 5-5, forcing a playoff to determine third and fourth place in the standings.

The rest of the tournament brought mixed success for the Farmers.

On Wednesday in the quarterfinal, Molokai defeated Maui Prep 25-7, 25-8, 22-25, 25-8 to advance to the semifinals against Hana.…

Legislators Face Molokai Issues Firsthand

Last week, House Finance Committee members visited Molokai for the first time in years to get an up-close picture of problems facing island residents.

State House Representative Lynn DeCoite (Molokai, East Maui, Lanai) said she felt legislators needed to hear her native island’s concerns in person and urged the committee to make the trip.

“It’s just a matter of having my colleagues understanding what we’re going through,” said DeCoite. “… They have their own districts to worry about. But they came, they wanted to support, they wanted to see what we’re facing.”

Committee members spoke with residents at Home Pumehana and met with homestead farmers at Lanikeha.…

Kaalekahi Shoots Second, Davis Third at MILs

Molokai High School’s Keaa Davis saved her best for last.

At last Saturday’s Maui Interscholastic League air riflery championships, the senior shooter finished in a season-high third place with 500 points in the girls’ individual competition. Teammate Jershon Kaalekahi placed second with 504 points for the boys, as reported by The Maui News.

Cody Nip joined Kaalekahi on the medal podium in third place. Nip posted 501 points and the second highest prone total at 188. Josh Cabreros’ 477 points tied him for ninth place, while Edwin Greenleaf came in 46th with 353 points to put the team in fourth overall.…

Homestead Gardening Program

The next round of the Hawaiian Homesteaders Gardening Program will start in late November. The purpose of this educational program is to increase homestead families access to fresh vegetables. Participants will be taught all aspects of establishing and managing a garden, and growing vegetables adapted to Molokai.

This program is open to all Hawaiian homesteaders residing on Molokai, and participation will be limited to 15 families. Classes will be held two to three times each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with occasional workshops. The choice of a Tuesday or Thursday meeting date will be determined by participants.…

The story goes that the great Chinese philosopher and teacher, Confucius, was teaching his class one day on his Silver Rule, “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” Evidently the class was not responding to his message in the manner he had hoped for and desired, or perhaps just did not get it. So wishing to get some positive reaction, he raised his voice a decibel and said, “He or she who sits on tack gets the point.” Almost immediately one young student rose to his feet and said, “Yes, Master Confucius, and rises to the occasion.”…
