Akaʻula School and their swim program has incorporated water polo, considered by some the most ruthless and competitive water related sport ever. Water polo is a full contact sport. Swimming, wrestling, shooting, passing and dribbling are all aspects of this sport. On top of that, players are treading water the entire time to keep afloat for long periods. To participate, students should have swimming experience for a safer game; meaning, endurance, speed, and agility.…

MHS Farmers Get Back to Sports

After not being able to compete for more than a year and a half because of COVID-19, Molokai High athletes are excited to be back to practicing for a season of competition. It’s been a bumpy road of hurdles, false starts and frustrations but “things are going in the right direction.”

“I’m very proud of our coaches and our kids doing their best to get out on the fields doing what they need to do,” said MHS Athletic Director Lee DeRouin. “I’m really proud of their attitudes. That’s what sports teaches us… there’s ups and downs and we’re getting through it and moving in the right direction.”…

COVID has had its toll on the Molokai High School (MHS) students with missing out on so many fun activities. With the start of a new school year, MHS is proud to announce the new Molokai High School Executive Board. The students on this board are earnest to ensure that the high school is a safe learning environment.  They plan to bring some fun activities to make up for much of the student isolation of the last school year.  These chosen students want to make a difference for the 2021/22 school year and are keen to hear from the students’ voices and opinions on making the school a better place.  …

PALS Keiki Kare Winter Program

County of Maui News Release

Online registration will begin Monday, Nov. 1, for the 2021 PALS Keiki Kare Winter Program, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

This modified program aims to provide working families with essential child care during the winter break and help to strengthen their family and community connections.

The PALS Keiki Kare Program will begin Tuesday, Dec. 21, and continue through Thursday, Dec. 30, excluding holidays.

The Molokai program will be located at the Mitchell Pauole Center. 

Registration for the program will need to be completed online only between Monday, Nov. 1 and Monday, Nov. 15, and is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old.…

Virtual Fall Break Camp

Learning Endeavors is offering its Citizen Science Fall Camp with a virtual session October 15 for kids from all islands ages 7-12. Campers investigate coastal ecosystems, such as wetlands, and engages youth in hands-on science, art projects and games! 

The virtual one-day session will take place Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Since this session is 100 percent virtual, it is open to participants from Molokai. Campers will engage in hands-on coastal ecology science and art projects, as well as fun games — and get to make friends with kids all around the islands!

No prior knowledge of citizen science is required to participate.…

Bike Bonanza Brings Joy of Riding

Nearly 50 bikes were given away free to Molokai keiki and more than 200 bikes were repaired during an event brought to Molokai by Krank Cycles Maui last Saturday. The giveaway opened at 9 a.m., and within half an hour, all the bikes donated by the Maui community had been given away, said Krank owner Aaron “Moose” Riechert. Kids arrived at the Molokai Youth Center on foot and left on a bike, while hundreds more bikes were dropped off in a drive-through repair line to become functional once more. 

“It’s a little hectic,” said Riechert with tools in hand, fixing a brake line as about half a dozen other mechanics worked their way through long lines of broken bikes.…

Science Education Fund Grants

Bayer News Release 

Applications are now being accepted for the Bayer Hawaii Science Education Fund. This Bayer Fund grant program is open to public schools serving students at the intermediate, high school and college grade levels on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Molokai.

Established in 2005, the Bayer Hawaii Science Education Fund helps provide Hawaii public schools with programs, tools, supplies and equipment to enhance science education in the schools, and encourages today’s students to consider a future career in the sciences. To date, nearly $320,000 has been awarded to schools in Hawaii.

Molokai High SCC Holds First Meeting

New school year, new discussions! The Molokai High School Community Council held its first meeting on Aug. 25, on Google Meets and covered topics like the budget, latest safety precautions, new staff and school celebrations to kick off the first meeting of the year. The meeting was attended by the five stakeholders of the school community: two students, two parents, two community members, four teachers, two classified staff, and the principal, Dr. Katina Soares.

The council welcomed new teachers, Jason Elder, Building and Construction teacher, and Geneva Castro-Lichtenstein, counselor, and the new student representatives, Mele Kanealiʻi and Quedin Bumatay.…
