Swimmers Headed to States

Two Molokai swimmers will be making a splash at the state competition this weekend after standout performances at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last weekend. Kama Ward won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and along with teammate Mauli Pupuhi, will be representing Molokai at the state pool. 

“Everyone swam really well today,” said Head Coach Amanda Labriola after the championships. “A lot of best times and one new school record!”

“Kama broke his 100 free record. Mauli Pupuhi took 5th in the 100 free and 50 free and swam his best time in the 100 free,” she continued.…

Boys Basketball Ends Season in 4th

Molokai High Boys Basketball team closed their season with a fourth place finish in the Maui Interscholastic League Championships. 

“Our boys made so much improvement through the season despite all the challenges,” said Head Coach Kalei Adolpho. 

In the semifinals, Molokai fell to Maui Prep 61-22, followed a quarterfinal win over Haleakala Waldorf 50-40. In the battle for third place, Lanai beat Molokai 76-53. 

“Seniors Namaka, Owen and Elijah represented Molokai with pride through their high school careers as athletes and have set a great example for the younger boys. They will be missed,” said Adolpho.…

Learning Endeavors is offering a free Coastal Camp for grades four to six during spring break. Campers will visit two coastal areas and engage in science experiments, art projects, and stewardship activities!

The two-day Molokai Coastal Camp is part of the Champions of Coastal Resilience (CCR) program, which seeks to develop climate stewards that care for our coastal communities. This camp is open to all Molokai elementary school students from grades four to six.  It will take place on March 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each day will start and end at Kaunakakai School.…

Girls Basketball Ends Season in Third

The Molokai High Girls Basketball season closed their season two weeks ago after taking third at the Maui Interscholastic League tournament. Molokai lost to Seabury Hall 47-15 in the semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 10, and Seabury went on to beat Lanai for the championship and the only MIL Division II team to represent this year at states.

Molokai got the win over Hana 36-25 on Friday to claim the third place title. Leila Hooper-Phifer led the Lady Farmers with 13 points and Lia-Chae Meyer had 11.

Last weekend, five Molokai High sports teams competed, with some losses and some wins. 

On the mat, Molokai’s wrestling team raked in more top finishes. On the girls’ side, Kailani Bicoy finished third in the 107-pound division, Barbara Simon placed second at 112 pounds and Carly Dudoit earned third at 138. For the boys, Austin Kaalekahi placed second in the 106-pound division, Reyn Raguindin came in third in 113B, Johnson Harris finished third in 132A, Hezekiah Horner placed second at 152, Clarence Horner finished third at 160, in the 195-pound division Heno Kaiama and Elisha Horner placed first and second respectively, and Leo Kalipi came in third at 220. …

Molokai High wrestlers competed on the mat for the first time since the pandemic last weekend at Maui High, with many top results. 

“We had a good first tournament of the season and the first in almost two years,” said Head Coach Randy Manley. “Fourteen of the 16 that wrestled had at least one win. Our standouts were Chloe Manaba, Johnson Harris and Heno Kaiama.”

On the girls’ side in the top three finishers, Chloe Manaba took first place in the 102-pound category, Barbara Simon third place at 117 pounds, Carly Dudoit and Kuulei Simon second and third place respectively at 132 pounds, and Stephanie Gandeza second place at 155.…

Two Molokai runners were named among the The Maui News MIL Boys and Girls Cross Country All-Stars. Molokai’s Namaka Ross and Kailani Bicoy made the cut to the All-Stars list, which is comprised of the top 10 finishers for the boys and girls Maui Interscholastic League Championship races. Ross is a senior and Bicoy is a junior at MHS, where they competed in the 2021 cross country season.…

Wins for Girls Basketball

The Molokai High Girls Basketball team got their season off to a strong start with two wins in Hana last weekend. Friday’s score was 47-14, and Saturday’s was 42-16, with high scorers including Lia-Chey Meyer, Leila Hooper-Phifer, Sally Andallo-Merkel, Kailana McGuire-Guerrero, Kaia Yamashita and Kaualea Helm. 

“Overall a great weekend of competition against Hana,” said first year Head Coach Kaimana Kahale. “Girls finally had an opportunity to play amidst this tough and challenging season so that was the biggest positive. Coaching wise we can establish a good foundation and had a chance to see what else we need to improve on.…

Bayer Fund News Release

Applications are now being accepted for the Bayer Hawaii Science Education Fund. This Bayer Fund grant program is open to public schools serving students at the intermediate, high school and college grade levels on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Molokai.

Established in 2005, the Bayer Hawaii Science Education Fund helps provide Hawaii public schools with programs, tools, supplies and equipment to enhance science education in the schools, and encourages today’s students to consider a future career in the sciences. To date, more than $325,000 has been awarded to schools in Hawaii.

Kupu Summer Programs Open Now

Kupu, Hawaii’s leading conservation and youth education nonprofit, announced applications are open for the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps Summer Program, which offers an intensive hands-on experience into the world of conservation. This year Kupu is inviting applicants to apply on Molokai, along with Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island. Application deadline is Feb. 25. 

The program runs for seven weeks, from June 7 to July 22. If selected, participants are partnered within a team of five to seven other like-minded individuals and each week they will get to explore and serve within a different partner site, which holds new adventures, challenges, teachings and opportunities for personal growth.…
