Blue Planet is recruiting for our fourth Climate Crew cohort! If you know of any motivated high school students on Molokai, Lanai, or Maui who might be interested in making an impact in their community through clean energy and sustainable efforts, please forward this to them! Last week, Kualapu’u School’s Hawaiian Immersion Program honored Hawaiian royalty in the annual La Aliʻi celebration. The entire school, along with some others island wide, will be prerecording May Day observances for broadcast this month, while a few schools will be doing live May Day celebrations this year. Donning colorful lei and representing the royal courts and colors of various islands, Lei Day is a beloved annual tradition among schools, one of many that was put on hold during the pandemic.

Judo Preps for States, Track Heads to MILs

Four Molokai judoka won titles at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last weekend, while two more earned second places and all six will be advancing to states this Saturday. 

Kaia Yamashita won the championship at 109 pounds, Sonni Han took the 154 division title, ‘Ekolu Horner won first place at 178 pounds and Nalu Kalipi won gold at 220 pounds. Kiliohu Duvauchelle took second at 109 pounds and Ara Puaa also earned silver at 172 pounds. 

The State Judo Championships will be held on May 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. 

The Track team competed in its last regular season meet last weekend and are headed to the MIL championships this weekend. …

Softball, Tennis End Their Seasons

The Lady Farmers went to bat at the Maui Interscholastic League Softball tournament on Lanai, closing their season short of the win. On Thursday, Molokai beat Hana 15-6, advancing to the final game. Lanai bested Molokai 15-6 in four innings on Friday, winning the championship and the state berth.  “Great moments are born from great opportunity.  As a coaching staff we are so very proud of our Lady Farmers Softball team and the progress they have made this season,” said Head Coach Kalei Pastrana. “Although they fell short this weekend, they played with a lot of heart. …

Volleyball Hosts Championship, Ends Season

The Boys Volleyball team hosted the Maui Interscholastic League Championships at the Barn last weekend for the first time since 2016. Molokai won Thursday’s game against Lanai 3-0 — 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 — then fell to Seabury 3-0 in a close championship Friday night, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18. 

“You know, it’s not quite the ending we wanted but the MIL will be very well represented by Seabury [at states],” said Head Coach Hale Domingo. “We had a game plan from the start but when you fall behind from the start, the game plan goes out the door.…

MHS Student Gets Citizen-Scholar Award

Last week, the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, in partnership with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the Department of Education, hosted its 18th annual Citizen-Scholar Awards luncheon at the Prince Waikiki and distributed more than $60,000 in scholarships to 42 public high school seniors. Among them, was Molokai High School student Paige Fukuoka.

The Farmers were named Maui Interscholastic League Division II champions last Friday after an unbeaten 8-0 season. They cinched the title with a 7-0 win over Seabury Hall in the MIL tournament final at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku. 

Head Coach Keahi Rawlins was happy for the victory but is keeping his eye on the next prize: states. 

“Coming home with the gold and a couple more wins,” he said Friday. “These boys all work hard and I’m happy for their accomplishments. We still got a lot of work ahead and we got to get working come Monday to prepare for states.…

Wins for Volleyball, Losses for Softball

The Boys Volleyball and Softball teams both had games last Tuesday and Wednesday, with two wins over Lanai for volleyball, while the Lady Farmers fell to Lanai in both softball games. 

Volleyball played at home, with both games ending 3-0 – Tuesday’s sets were 25-11, 25-14, 25-21 and Wednesday’s scores were 25-13, 25-14, 25-13. 

“Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was fun yet different,” Head Coach Hale Domingo said of the mid-week games. “Even if we won in three, the start of all games is a battle to get to 10 and Lanai made a few mistakes and we capitalized on it and took the momentum and we rode it out and got two big wins.”…

The Judo team closed their regular season with a Maui tournament last weekend, bringing home many top three finishes. 

For the boys, top finishers were Randyn Cabreros in third place at 121 pounds, Ekolu Horner taking first at 178 and Nalu Kalipi winning the 220 division. On the girls’ side, Anjolie Manaba finished first at 98 pounds, Kaia Yamashita and Kiliohu Duvauchelle took first and second, respectively, at 109, Noeau Lenwai placed second at 115, Olapa Duvauchelle claimed second at 122, Reina Kahue Cabanting placed third at 139, Sonni Han won the 154 division and Ara Puaa placed second at 172 pounds. …

Baseball Continues Winning Streak

Molokai High’s baseball team hit it out of the park last weekend playing on their home field against Seabury. The Farmers picked up two more wins, coming out of the weekend with a 6-0 season record and the title of regular season champs. 

On Friday, Molokai beat Seabury 14-4 in six innings. Saturday’s game closed with a 12-1 score, in a game that honored the team’s five seniors, Steven-James Arce, Hezekiah Horner, Angelo Duvauchelle, Gavin Ainoa and Saven Kaahanui.

The team goes into the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament seeded number one, and will play Hana (0-6) in the semis on Thursday.…
