“Spring Break” in America — since the 1930s — meant college students breaking from long winter studies to bask in lazy sun-and-surf days. But that wasn’t the case for a select cohort of 13 Molokai High School students, members of the Molokai College Career Club (MC3).

The MC3, during this March 13-18 holiday, traveled 5,000 miles on a self-funded college career tour to Columbia University and New York University in NYC and Princeton University and Monmouth University in New Jersey.

They further enjoyed a customized career night organized by Emily Harris, a NYC resident, longtime MHS supporter since 2014, and mainland paddler in Na Wahine o Ke Kai.…

On Saturday, Lanai beat Molokai 13-3 in five innings.

Robotics Team Goes to Regionals

By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor

Molokai High’s Robotics team built their own robot over the past few months and last weekend, took it to the regional First Robotics Competition (FRC) organized by Hawaii First Robotics, a nonprofit that fosters STEM learning and competitions. Along with other Hawaii teams, the event, held at Oahu’s Stan Sherriff Arena, also hosted teams from Japan and Australia.

Molokai teamed up with ‘Iolani and St. Louis high schools, an alliance that got them to the semifinals, according to ‘Iolani parent and Molokai resident Jeannine Rossa.

“Going into this event, we never actually got to test our hanging mechanism properly since we didn’t have the space to build the hanging bars,” posted Coach Edwin Mendija on social media.…

2 Wins for Baseball

By The Molokai Dispatch Staff

The Molokai High Baseball team traveled to Lanai last weekend, where they won Friday’s game 13-3 and Saturday’s game 15-0, both in five innings. Rainy conditions caused a delay in Friday’s start but the boys managed to begin their season strong with a 2-0 record.

“[A] short rain delay allowed the boys to settle down and play some quality ball,” said Head Coach Keahi Rawlins on Friday. Solid pitching and timely hits allowed us to separate ourselves.”

Saturday’s game went even smoother for the Farmers.

“Today was a more complete team effort win,” said Rawlins on Saturday.…

Kilohana Native Garden

By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor

With fingers caked in dirt, members of Kilohana’s fifth grade class patted native plants into the ground, learning their names, their growing habits and cultural uses. The school now has a native plant garden thanks to their efforts and the support of several local organizations.

It’s a dream at least 10 years in the making, said fifth grade teacher Tammy Castor. She said the school previously planted a native garden area behind the campus but it fell prey to deer and wild pigs, along with not being cared for over summer vacations. A new garden took shape earlier this month in a courtyard plot at the heart of the school, where it will be sheltered from predators, watered by timed irrigation over the summer, and can be easily accessible and frequently admired by the entire school. …
