No Distractions

With the advent of texting, tweeting, and multi-media messaging, millions of people have adopted the practice of distracted driving. However, a few Molokai students are taking steps to further educate themselves – and others – about the repercussions of a potentially deadly habit.

Molokai High School students Mason Horner, Kaili Levi, Kanahele Montizor and Brennan Lee-Namakaeha traveled to Oahu two weeks ago to participate in the Tesoro Driving Competition and Allstate Distracted Driving Workshop. The team placed third overall and earned a $1,000 award.

“[We] learned that texting [while driving] is a huge distraction,” Levi said, and the equivalent of drinking four bottles of beer before getting behind the wheel.

While Levi attended the distracted driving workshop, Lee-Namakaeha participated in the competition portion of the weekend – practicing parallel parking, precision driving, reversing between cones, and a freeway test.

, but alcohol is the bigger issue on Molokai.”

Both Levi and Lee-Namakaeha hope these grassroots efforts resonate with the island and inspire people to take preventative measures to ensure safety of all drivers on the road.

“Everyone knows each other here,” Levi added. “One tragedy on the island is big.”

Advancing Farmers

With Larriley Rawlins’ contributing homers in each of last weekend’s games, Molokai High School managed to sweep St. Anthony and snag a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

The Lady Farmers rolled out another mercy rule win – which they accomplished last week against Seabury – on Friday night, defeating the Trojans 13-1, in the first of three games.

Molokai had a close repeat the following morning, outscoring St. Anthony 14-1 in only four innings, and won the second, 11-0, in five.

was crazy,” Coach Stacey Horner said. “I must have had four or five heart attacks.”

Another winner was Kaipoi Kondo, defeating Maui Prep’s Ray Vo 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 on Thursday in the first round of boys’ singles.

“We went in ranked fifth,” Horner said. “So I was very impressed with how they played.”

Montizor and Horner will be attending the State Championships May 5-6.

Volleyball
It was a split weekend for Molokai High School’s boys’ volleyball team, defeating Hana 3-2 on Friday, but then falling short, 3-2, on Saturday at The Barn.

On Friday, Molokai gained a five-set win, defeating the Dragons 25-22, 15-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13.

Kawaiola Kalipi recorded a total of 53 assists and two blocks for the Farmers, while Haaheo Falealii had 22 kills, followed by David Gomes and each adding nine kills.

Strumming Their Way to Molokai

Nine students from Kamehameha School brought cheers and laughs to a Molokai audience last Saturday as they played guitar and sang. An ample audience of about three dozen swayed and sang along to an eclectic mix of favorites like “Wahine Ilikea,” “Take Me Home Country Roads” and even a song by Frank Sinatra. Everyone joined hands in an all-encompassing circle for the program’s finale, “Hawaii Aloha.”

Both a music and a service club, the students of the Kamehameha Guitar Club volunteered at Ali`i Fishpond with Merve Dudoit before their performance at Home Pumehana last Saturday. The group, which includes two Molokai students, raised money to make the trip, and local families donated food and opened their homes for the students to stay.

Keiki Draw for Visitors

For visitors and curious locals alike, the Molokai Visitors Association (MVA) has new unique brochures, sure to highlight what Molokai really is.

The colorful brochures were hand-crafted by Kaunakakai Elementary third graders as a school project. When designing the pamphlets, students discussed Molokai’s past and how it has changed.

The project was brought to Molokai by Alestra Menendez of Kamehameha Schools for the second year in a row. Tiana Miguel, Kaunakakai literacy resource teacher, led the project – teaching writing with a focus on Hawaiian culture and “highlighting our students’ sense of pride.”

Howzit on Molokai

Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona, Jr. has been an advocate for the Read Aloud America Program (RAP) since its inception five years ago. Last week, he stopped by Kualapu`u School’s final RAP of the school – and made a few other stops around Molokai as he prepares for his gubernatorial campaign. The Molokai Dispatch was able to catch up with the busy politician at Kualapu`u School.

Molokai Dispatch (MD): Why come here to Read Aloud America today?
Lt. Gov. Aiona: It’s a couple of things. Of course literacy. The joy of reading. And to me, this a great tool to unify the family. You have the drinks, you have the snacks, it’s fun times with the family. But it’s about bringing the family together.

MD:
Why are these programs so important?
Aiona: When you read the critique, the evaluation, it’s always about “thank you for bringing RAP to our community, you taught us to do things as a family, you’ve really excited or brought interest to our children about reading.”

Baseball Finishes Strong

Molokai High School’s baseball team wrapped up its season last weekend with two wins in its triple-game series against Seabury Hall at Duke Maliu Regional Park – awarding the team second place in the final Division II standings.

The Farmers beat out the Spartans Friday evening by one run, lost by one run the following day, 8-7, and then recaptured the lead in their second Saturday game, winning 18-11.

“It was well played by both teams,” said Coach Steve Trout, a former major league pitcher. “We have respect for what Seabury has done, and they have respect for us.”

In Molokai’s final blowout game on Saturday, the farmers took a 6-0 lead after only one inning, then fell behind 10-7 in the top of the third, only to regain victory shortly thereafter.

“That was a really exciting game,” added Trout. “We showed what we practiced.”

In the last game of the triple header, Molokai's Ehukai Rawlins scored twice and drove in three runs, while Jubilee Tabilangan gained three runs and a ‘runs batted in’, and Shaquille Rapanot scored twice and drove in one run.

is about the same,” Augustiro said. “I’m expecting to see about the same results.”

High School Parents to Serve

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Attention to all parents who currently have a child attending Molokai High School or will have a child attending in 2010-2011.

As many of you are already aware, the Molokai High School Community Council, also known as the SCC Board, is one of the governing bodies that assist the principal in making the decisions that impact Molokai High School's educational plan.  It is required that three parents serve on this board as parent representatives, communicating the wishes and voice of the parent segment of our community.
