Programs through the 21st Century grant are available to all communities on Molokai from the east end to Maunaloa, and Maunaloa has just added a couple new programs for its children to be involved in.

Maunaloa Elementary School has already been providing after-school academic support for children in grades third through sixth. Children are able to attend tutoring support, which gives extra help with homework, and skills support, which is a computer-based learning system for reading and math enrichment. This semester, Maunaloa Elementary School is now able to offer the same after school academic support programs for children in grades kindergarten through second, but the younger children will be able to also participate in crafts during the skills support class.…

Kualapu`u School Receives $2.75M for Improvements

Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced the release of $34.5 million in Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) for education, health services and communications projects statewide. As part of those funds, Kualapu`u School will receive $2,750,000 for construction of a new water line.

Rep. Mele Carroll and Sen. J. Kalani English who represent East Maui, the islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kaho`olawe and Molokini worked together with their colleagues and appropriated $2,750,000 in the budget.

“Kualapu`u Elementary School has needed to improve its infrastructure,” said Rep. Carroll. “The $2,750,000 would cover design and construction for a new water line and/or provisions for fire suppression; ground and site improvements and equipment are a major step in our continued school maintenance initiatives.”…

Making the TeamTwo MHS Lady Farmers named to All-Star Basketball Team

Two of Molokai High School Girls Basketball captains, Brianna Tangonan and Kalyn Kaulia-Makaiwi, were named to The Maui News Maui Interscholastic League Division II All-Star first team for their performance on the court last season. Selections are made by coaches in the league, according to The Maui News.

“To make first team means a lot, because we were a fighting team to the end,” said first-year coach Addie McCreedy. “They should be proud of themselves, even if it wasn’t the season we hoped for. The team is very proud of them.”

The Lady Farmers’ four-year run as MIL D-II champions ended this year when Seabury took the title.…

Biologist Bill Puleloa receives first ever Malama Kuleana Honua Award.

This year’s annual Molokai Earth Day celebration, hosted by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) marked the beginning of a new tradition –the “Malama Kuleana Honua” (Caring Responsibly for Earth) Honorary award. William “Bill” Puleloa, a recently retired aquatic biologist for the state’s Department of Land and Resources, was its first recipient. He was commended at Earth Day for his work with monitoring the conditions of Molokai streams, collaborating with local fishermen and researching the native honu, or green sea turtles.

“Bill has always been a resource and supporter to conserving our resources,” said Ed Misaki, TNC’s Program Director.…

Drug court judge retires after helping hundreds.

Imagine being a young parent in an unhappy, abusive relationship. Feeling hopeless, you turn to drugs and before you know it, you’re facing jail time for crimes you committed under the influence. But thanks to Second Circuit Court Judge Shackley Raffetto, who believes that for many, staying out of prison and getting some help can mean all the difference – you could trade the cell for a classroom.

Raffetto is responsible for bringing a drug court and treatment program to Molokai, and held his last graduation ceremony on the island last week before he retires.…

The final tryout race for Kualapu`u School’s 5K Running Team was held on Saturday, April 14 on the Coffee’s of Hawaii plantation course. Thirty runners completed the course, with the top six runners in each division receiving awards. After the awards, the Kualapu`u School team that will compete in the Honolulu 5K for Kids on April 29 was announced. Team members include Kaina Adolpho, Ikua Deponte, Nainoa Kahale, Rafael Adolpho, Ikena Deponte, and CJ Adolpho for the boys. For the girls, Keaheakekehau Ross, Ayla-Rose Naehu-Ramos, Genevieve Kikukawa, and Noelani Helm were selected. Race organizers would like to thank the Molokai community and all visiting runners who have participated and supported their series of races over the past year.…

Children develop social competence in three main ways: initiating interactions, solving conflicts with others (children and adults), and maintaining ongoing friendships. Children in preschool or daycare are joining social situations, and spending more time with peers at earlier stages in their lives. Parents should then choose a preschool that encourages the kids to socialize and help them build relationships with their classmates.

Recent studies show that the importance of forming friendships ranks second to the forming of family relationships. Friends come in all ages, shapes, colors, nationalities and religions.

Punana Leo O Molokai hosted its 19th annual Ho`omau fundraiser to celebrate Hawaiian language and culture last Saturday at Lanikeha Center.  This year’s celebration was filled with face painting, horseback rides, crafts and vendor booths and performances from talented Molokai youth.

Learn about politics, citizenship, voting, Hawaii’s government and much more this fall in a new class coming to UH Maui College, Molokai. Political Science 110, taught by Larry Tool, will be held Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m.

Our own state of Hawaii is used in this introduction to politics and government. 2012 is an election year. We will have interesting guest speakers who will help us explore questions like why do we need government, how much does out past shape our future, who are our politicians and how do they get, keep and use power and does Hawaii need political change?…
