Earning their Bread and Butter

Eating the food they cooked was the icing on the cake for students who spent their fall break in the kitchen.Twelve students interested to explore culinary arts signed up for the free course called Molokai Culinary Arts Boot Camp Oct. 7 through 11 at the Ho`olehua Lanikeha Center.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through the Rural Development Project, the boot camp featured Chef Lyndon Honda of Maui, who shared skills and techniques of the industry.

“When I was setting up the curriculum, I set [the bar] pretty high because I felt like if we could attain that, it’s great and if we can do more, that’s even better.”…

A Weekend of Farmer Spirit

Careers, crowns, games and glow sticks made for a fun and spirited weekend at Molokai High School’s Green and White Carnival and Career Fair this year.

Hosted by the Friends of Molokai High and Middle Schools and sponsored by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, MHS students and alumni celebrated being Farmers by participating in some friendly competition Friday and Saturday to see which class showed the most green-and-white spirit. After a series of games and activities, reigning champs, Class of 1982, took home the title, adding another notch to their belt.

“Our objective is to show the other classes what spirit is all about,” said Tania Doao, Class of ’82.…

Celebrating Kalo

In the ancient days of Hawaii, each of the islands’ estimated 500,000 people would eat one seven- to nine-pound kalo plant per day, according to Alton Arakaki, a Molokai extension agent with the University of Hawaii College Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR.) Ancient Hawaiians carefully selected more than 300 kalo varieties to ensure food security and successful growth in many environments. Today, only about 70 of those varieties still exist — and without vigilant cultivation, that number may dwindle.

Last weekend, Molokai residents got the opportunity to select among more than 50 kalo varieties to grow in their own gardens, helping to carry on a tradition that can yield health, cultural understanding and economic benefits.…

Schools Harvest for Health

A national program is planting seeds for growing healthier youth and nutritional cafeteria lunches on Molokai one school at a time.

FoodCorps, a nonprofit program newly introduced to the island last month, works to address childhood obesity in underserved areas. FoodCorps partners with the AmeriCorps service network and currently operates in 15 states, According to a Kohala Center press release, an academic institute for environmental science research and education as well as the and host site for Hawaii’s FoodCorps Program. Hawaii, California and New Jersey were added to their 2013-2014 service plan.

Out of 1,000 applicants from around the country, eight youths were selected to serve Hawaii’s public and charter schools, according to Nancy Redfeather, program director of the Hawaii Island School Garden Network (HISGN) and host site supervisor of FoodCorps Hawaii.…

Aka`ula Art Show

Friends, family, community, students and staff of Aka`ula School gathered last Friday evening to celebrate art as the sun set over Kalae`s cool hills. The annual event, held for the past seven years at the home of Bronwyn and Rikki Cooke, featured a lively display of student work as well as pieces donated by Aka`ula staff and board members and local artists — all on sale to support the school.

Dara Lukonen, teacher and head of school, said the show represents the work of about two dozen of the school’s 35 students in grades five through 12. This year’s theme was sand art, guided by art teacher Paul Riel.…

Molokai Youth Take a Stand on Suicide Prevention

HCCI and MCHC News Release

Hawaii’s Caring Communities Initiative (HCCI) is a statewide program focused on engaging youth leaders in suicide prevention awareness activities. HCCI is working with youth in six communities across the state of Hawaii and has also partnered with Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) and Molokai General Hospital (MGH).

The goal of this project is to empower the youth with knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in their community. We are proud to say we have a substantial number of Molokai youth that has been recruited to become advocates for suicide prevention. Fire Demo Teaches Safety

Sirens rang, cars were cut apart in a simulated rescue, a helicopter circled and landed, and flames lept from the Kaunakakai Ball Park last Saturday. The Maui County Fire Department held a live demonstration to teach Molokai families how to prevent and react if fires were to occur in their homes.

Seventeen of Molokai’s firefighters put on their first fire prevention demonstration since 2007 as part of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week celebrated in October. The week commemorates the 1871 Chicago fire, which killed hundreds and destroyed thousands of buildings.

Since then, national fire prevention has been a primary health concern, and after being observed for more than 80 years, Fire Prevention Week is considered to be the longest running public safety program on record, according to NFPA.…

Circus Donates to Molokai Schools

Molokai High School (MHS) and Maunaloa Elementary School received donations from the Modern American Circus during their visit on Molokai Friday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 15.

MHS received $500 and Maunaloa received $1,000 after Molokai Ranch agreed to sponsor the circus, providing land and utilities and requested that the circus donate to two local schools, according to a Molokai Ranch news release.

The circus also provided an opportunity for the MHS football team to help clean up after the shows to raise an additional $500 for MHS athletics. Vice Principal Daniel Espaniola said the school will receive a total of $1,000 after the three-day event.…
