Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

The first 5K in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle School series of five 5K’s went off without a hitch this Saturday with over 40 participants – racers, runners and walkers – taking on the three-mile challenge from Coffees of Hawai`i to Ala Ekahi and back.

Taking first place overall was Molokai High School track standout Akona Adolpho, winning in a time of 20:07.  Second and third places went to fellow MHS teammates: Hunter Manaba with a time of 21:50 and Grayson Aldridge with a time of 22:08.  In the women’s open division, Sue Forbes and Jesse Ford continued their three-year duel with Sue managing to outlast her longtime rival and friend. …

Girls Pin Place at States

Molokai High School wrestlers competed in the HHSAA State Championship this weekend. The girls team placed fifth overall with a score of 91.1, and the boys finished 35th out of 48 schools with a 10.5.

Five girls and one boy placed in the individual competitions. Kailaoe Cabating came out in second in the 105-pund weight class, Rizpah Torres Umi finished third in the 125 class, Desiree Corpuz tooke fourth place in the 113 class, Cendell Manley finished fifth in the 140 and Karley Kaulili placed sixth in the 109-pound weight class. Noah Caparida finished sixth in the boys 140-pound weight class.…

An Evening with the Galliard String Quartet

The Galliard String Quartet, considered Hawaii’s premier string quartet, will perform a free concert March 5 in the Kaunakakai Elementary School Cafeteria. The students from the Molokai String and Brass program, under the direction of Bob Underwood, will open for the Honolulu-based quartet. The Molokai students will also work with the quartet individually in master classes while the musicians are on Molokai.

The Galliard String Quartet performs programs that include the works of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert and Brahms. Music of the masters is the Galliard’s forte, but the group’s repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes, romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music and more.…

Wrestlers Bring Home the Gold

The Molokai High School Wrestlers competed at the MIL championships on Maui this weekend. The girls team finished second overall, and the boys finished fourth overall. There were ten wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament this coming weekend.

Here are the individual awards for the MIL championships:

5k Race Series Raises Funds for Schools

Molokai Middle and Kalapu`u Charter schools news release

Molokai Middle School is joining forces with Kualapu’u Charter School to host five 5K FUN-raising races this spring. Race dates are the following Saturdays: March 2, 9 and 16, and April 6 and 13. All 5K races will begin at 8 a.m. at Coffee’s of Hawaii.

The five races in the series will be used as qualifying races for each school’s team that will compete in the Honolulu 5K for Kids Sunday, April 28. School teams will be chosen based upon each runner’s best three out of five race results. Total combined time in three races will be used to determine selection.…

A Game 30 Years in the Making

 

The baseball field in Maunaloa sat abandoned for 30 years. There were no games, no lessons on teamwork or sportsmanship, no scoreboards and no homeruns. But Saturday morning, as overcast skies gave way to a bright, windy day, the boys and girls of Team Molokai made their way onto the field near Maunaloa Elementary School. For them it was just another ball game, but for the community it was so much more.

Team parent Kalehua Sproat Augustiro said the game gives a boost to an area that’s often outside of the action.

“It brings life to the town of Maunaloa,” Sproat-Augustiro said.…

Applications are now being accepted for Monsanto Hawaii’s two scholarship programs – the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship and the Monsanto Hawaii Agricultural Scholarship.

High school seniors interested in a life sciences degree are invited to apply for the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship. As many as 10 scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in 2013. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors of all high schools in Hawaii who will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a discipline related to the life sciences (including agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science and soil science).…

Taking a stand against meth

Five girls from Ho`omana Hou High School saw first-hand how common meth was on Molokai, so they decided to take a stand. Partnering with the Hawaii Meth Project, they began a campaign to bring education and awareness to a community burdened by the dangerous drug. Ingesting Adderall through nasal administration may result in a range of short-term and long-term side effects, impacting both mental and physical well-being. Keiki Expo will be Big Fun for the Little Ones

The ninth annual Keiki Expo packed a lot of learning and entertainment into one morning at the Mitchell Pauole Center last Saturday.

Education and health was the driving force behind the Expo’s activities, but for the keiki, it was all fun and games. The “Diaper Dash” crawling contest had tots racing for the win, and Kala Juario got things moving with keiki Zumba. There was also a bouncing castle, giveaways and storytelling.

Event organizer Lori-Lei Rawlins-Crivello said the event shows parents of young children what programs on the island can help them and their kieki.

“Once the children get older, everything they do is part of the [school] system,” Rawlins-Crivello said.…

MHS Student Accepted into Harvard

 

Michael Kikukawa’s Ivy League dreams have come true.  With a list of colleges he had yet to apply for, the Molokai High School senior received an acceptance letter to Harvard this past December. The news opened a door for Kikukawa to prestigious school and proved to Molokai students that they too can find pathways to this kind of success.

“Anything worth doing is going to involve a struggle,” he said, noting the challenges he faced in pursuing his goal.

MHS Principal Stan Hao said Kikukawa’s successes exhibit what can be accomplished by setting a goal and working toward it.

“It shows that a great desire can be realized, even in a small rural community like ours,” he said.…
