The Time of Year

By ‘Ohi’aku Ritte Camara Tangonan, Junior

Thanksgiving, the time of year where the house becomes a five-star restaurant and the most ‘onoest aroma stains the air with only the image of the finished product. Beautiful and scrumdiddlyumptious desserts are baked with aloha over small conversations while keiki are running around having fun. New recipes and new dishes are brought to thought every year and tried by family members and ones that have been least touched, well, you could say, we ain’t seeing that dish next year.…

A’o Aku; A’o Mai: What I Learn, I Teach

By Sara Jane Larkin, Teacher

We were very thrilled about the big storm east end last week.  Our writing was focused on what we saw, what we heard and how we felt during the storm.…

Celebrating Farmer Spirit at Homecoming

By Sage Yamashita, Intern Reporter

After three years of Homecoming being absent from the Barn, the competitive build-up between Molokai High’s students has returned. Homecoming is usually thought of as the start of school and sports, a dance, and school spirit. On the other hand, Molokai High brings it to a new level with the version called Green and White.

This year’s theme was Cartoony Tunes. Each class was required to choose a cartoon movie filled with fun musical tunes. The senior class of 2023 chose the film Rio. Class of 2024 went with a classic, Lilo and Stich. Sophomores, class of 2025, took it to the ocean with Surfs Up, and the freshmen selected Beauty and the Beast.…

Molokai High School’s Future Focus

Sunday, November 27th, 2022

By Jack Kiyonaga, Community Reporter

After several years of flux, Molokai High School readies itself for the future.

Recent years have seen dramatic shifts in instructional time, scheduling and educational goals at Molokai High School. These changes, amplified by the pandemic, have been areas of both contention and excitement.

The Academy Model is a new format for MHS whereby students will choose one of three academies to shape their classes.

According to the National Career Academy Coalition, these academies help students become “college and career ready” by offering “real world authentic experience” and “strengthening what [students] learn in the classroom with what [they] may do after graduation.”…

Growing and Cooking with Family

By Jack Kiyonaga, Community Reporter

Now in its fourth year, `Ohana Garden and Grindz teaches kids ages 8 and up about gardening, cooking and sustainability. It provides keiki the opportunity to work with their families to create a meal from dirt to dinner plate.

The `Ohana Garden and Grindz project, recently awarded a USDA Rural Health and Safety Education Grant, grew out of meetings with Molokai homestead families. Families wanted to pass along a love of agriculture as well as educate children in kitchen safety and practice, explained `Ohana Garden and Grindz facilitator Heather Greenwood, an extension agent for the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the principal investigator for this most recent grant. …
