Lions Roar: Vision Screenings

Molokai Lions Club News Release

February was a big month for vision screening on Molokai. On Feb. 3-4, the Molokai Lions Club did their yearly school vision screening. Lion volunteers along with Doctors Karsten Lee and Carlys Higuchi from Maui Optix screened 395 children in four elementary schools and four preschools. Twelve children were found to have a possible problem and the school health aid will refer that finding to the parent.

This service has been going strong for many years and it’s been enhanced in the last several years with the help of the Maui doctors. Your support of the Lions Annual Walk for Sight helps the club defray the air cost for the doctors.…

Winning Values from the Wrestling Mat

Though the Molokai Middle School wrestling program has only competed for two years, young athletes walked away with some big titles by the end of this season’s program. Rather than skill, Coach Benny Venenciano attributes their two, first-place tournament wins to passion and soul.

“When you have the will, the beauty of this sport is the balance of taking care of yourself physically and mentally, and doing your schoolwork,” said Venenciano. “At this developmental age, I wanted wrestling to be that sport for them.”

During the winter season, 19 athletes wrestled after school and about half had no prior wrestling experience, according to Venenciano.…

Boys Basketball Ends Season in Fourth

Entering the boys basketball season, coach Carl Adolpho Jr. called the year a building period. Two weeks ago, the boys ended their season earning fourth place at Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Championships.

“We thought we could do better, but it was a good experience for me as a first-year coach and for the team,” said Adolpho.

After coming close to beating Seabury in the regular season—sometimes, just a few points away from victory — Adolpho said the team was excited to get a chance to play them again in their first match-up of the MIL championship.

However, tournament ended for the Farmers in a 35-58 upset that Thursday.…

Farmers Baseball Takes Tournament


Molokai Baseball swept their first pre-season tournament at Duke Maliu Regional Park last weekend, taking first place with a 3-0 record. The Farmers beat PAC-5 12-2 in five innings Friday, followed by sweeping Kaimuki 11-0, also in five innings. Girls Basketball Finish 4th in State

For girls basketball head coach Lee DeRouin, 14 athletes entered this season with high energy and ambitious goals, determined to represent Molokai at the state level. While they were set back by some injuries along the way, the Lady Farmers left Oahu’s Neal Blaisdell Center two weeks ago considered one of the top teams in Hawaii.

“As a team we were able to make many of our goals this year,” said DeRouin, via email. “Even though we fell short of the state championship, we were able to accomplish a state semi-final game and got to play a consolation game.”

After their 14-1 season record and earning the Maui Interscholastic League Championship (MIL) title, the Farmers traveled to Oahu Wednesday, Feb.…

Kualapu’u 5K Results

On a rain-splashed Saturday that coincided with the opening day of competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics, Kualapu`u School held its first of six fundraisers on its extended Farrington 5K course.  Eighteen participants ran, jogged, walked, and biked 3.8 miles to show their support for healthy lifestyle choices and to help raise money for this year’s Kualapu`u School 5K team.

Applications are now being accepted for Monsanto Hawaii’s two scholarship programs – the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship and the Monsanto Hawaii Agricultural Scholarship.

High school seniors interested in a life sciences degree are invited to apply for the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship. As many as 10 scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in 2014. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors of all high schools in Hawaii who will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a discipline related to the life sciences (including agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science and soil science).…

Soup R Bowl

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) announces the return of the Soup ‘R Bowl on Saturday, March 1.  This is our annual fundraising event to help raise funds for youth scholarships and programming in the visual and performing arts.

There will be a silent auction that will feature our visiting ceramic artists and several of our local artists including music and performing arts. So this year our potters are hard at work creating 500 unique stoneware soup bowls. Stoneware is a type of clay which is fired at extremely high temperature making it durable and oven-safe. Each beautiful bowl is signed by the artist who created it.…

New Science Classrooms Proposed for MHS

For almost 10 years, ninth through 12th graders at Molokai High have had to learn science without lab facilities.  Students must often watch video simulations instead of performing hands-on experiments, according to the Department of Education (DOE). But that may change within two years.  Molokai High School (MHS) is in the early stages of obtaining permits to build two science classrooms, scheduled for completion by the end of 2015, according to the draft Environmental Assessment (EA).

Since the separation of Molokai High and Middle schools in 2004, MHS’s approximately 340 students have conducted science education in two general purpose classrooms that lack the basic lab requirements, stated the EA.…
