Kualapu`u School Receives Verizon Grant

Two weeks ago, Bill Hozey from Verizon Communications visited Kualapu`u School to present a $3,900 grant check from the Verizon Foundation intended to develop the school’s third grade science curriculum.

The grant will be used by the charter school’s math and science curriculum coordinator Sue Forbes to train the school’s third grade teachers in hands-on science instruction in the areas of gardening, health and fitness.

“I hope this engenders a love of science in teachers and students,” said Forbes, who will be designing lessons and tests that align with the Next Generation Science Standards. “We will build a curriculum that involves STEM [science, technology, engineering and math.]…

Mahalo Molokai for all the donations and aloha for the Molokai Keiki o Ke Kai. A special mahalo to Na Kama Kai, who provided 20 plus free boards for our keiki. Youth in Motion will be starting up their Stand Up Paddling season from Aug. 18 through Thanksgiving this year. If anyone is interested in joining Youth in Motion for the 2014/15 year, please come down to their beach area at the harbor on Thursdays Aug. 7 and 14 at 6 p.m. for sign up and learn more about the program for the coming year. Swimming will also be introduced in September and again in 2015.

Youth In Motion is also encouraging adults and youth who are interested in volunteering, planning, coordinating, writing, photography and filming to participate in the program so that they can assist with the website, newsletters, videos, social media, and bring back the festival, “A Celebration of Youth Opportunities,” “Na Opio Hana Pa`a.”…

This past school year as a Food Corp service member at Sust`ainable Molokai, I visited weekly with Kumu Teddy Sotello’s second grade class at Maunaloa Elementary. On a typical class day, I led students outside to their small, designer 4-by-4-foot “tea garden” bed—constructed at the beginning of the year—where we’d harvest a couple of pieces of mint and lemongrass. We often discussed how herbs like mint and lemongrass can be used in different kinds of teas, similar to how raspberry leaf tea is appreciated for its unique flavor and health benefits. I collected the harvest, poured over hot water, and we’d wait for tea to brew.…

College Continues Expansion Plans

Picture this: a higher learning education center with a spacious auditorium, high-tech computer labs, larger classrooms and a grassy campus pavilion right here on Molokai. This long-awaited dream may become a reality for UH Maui College, Molokai now that the college has completed its Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP).

The college worked with PBR Hawaii –an urban planning firm –to draft the LRDP which was started in 2012.  The LRDP was approved and finalized in June 2014. This plan will guide the development of the college to the year 2027. The first measure of development will include expanding the current two-acre site to a five-acre campus that will utilize the land to the west along Kamehameha Hwy.…

Kalaupapa Welcomes Summer Interns

Summer vacation brings images of students lounging on the beach, grabbing cold ice cream and catching up with friends. But a few Molokai students are using their summer to gain valuable career experiences and a greater understanding of the significance of Kalaupapa and its unique cultural resources.

Kalaupapa National Park Service’s (KNPS) Cultural Resource Management Division is hosting six summer interns, three working in partnership with Alu Like, Inc. Summer Youth Employment program and three as volunteers. The interns are assisting the Kalaupapa National Historical Park with a variety of projects from raking leaves and beautifying the settlement to cleaning up patient resident homes and creating informative Facebook posts.…

MHS HOSA Team Earns National Recognition

Six students, one advisor and one chaperone from Molokai High School (MHS) traveled to Orlando, Florida on June 22 to compete in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) national competition. The team of Oceana Madani, Marissa Motas, and Luke Kikukawa earned second in the nation for their PSA presentation on Child Hunger. This achievement places Molokai students in the national spotlight and shows that hard work does pay.

The win was offset by the burden of traveling eighteen hours and crossing four time zones to reach their destination. Molokai competitors face challenges that other islands and states do not in terms of cost and travel time. …

Keiki Make Waves at Last Surf Meet

Keiki surfers took on the waves and competed in fun heats at Waialua Beach last Saturday. They surfed their way through the day with the sun shining, cool winds blowing and light waves crashing to the shoreline, for the last Molokai Keiki O Ke Kai surf meet of the summer.

The meet, made possible through funding provided by Friendly Isle United Fun, was part of the 25th Annual drug and alcohol-free Keiki Surf Meet Series. The event gives aspiring surfers age 13 and younger the opportunity to compete and have fun learning to surf.

If you are interested in diving deeper into the world of surfing, there are numerous opportunities for lessons tailored to young aspiring surfers.…

4-H Ranchers Put Skills to the Test

Judged on their stance, temperament, muscle mass and ability to follow direction, pigs and steer competed with their owners for top ribbon last weekend. The animals were gathered under white tents at the Kaunakakai Ball Park as eager fans filled the stands ready to cheer on keiki as they showed off their prized animals.

For months, youth in the Molokai 4-H Livestock Club, have been raising, grooming, keeping records and showing their animals in preparation for the annual Molokai 4-H Livestock Expo last weekend. The program promotes agriculture and teaches children responsibility and the business aspect of life, said Event Director Rex Kamakana.…
