Students Get a Glimpse of the Future

Thousands of miles away from the quiet streets of The Friendly Isle, Molokai High students braved crowded subways and the fast-paced lifestyle of New York City. The students experienced both the East Coast and post-high school life during a six-day tour of colleges and workplaces.

“It’s so exciting,” said junior Misty Parker at an Oct. 30 community presentation of the students’ trip. “You always have to be on your guard, because there’s just people everywhere.”

High school educator Ric Ornellas, who lived in New York for 40 years, came up with the idea to visit New York over a year ago and helped form the Molokai College Career Tour Club (MCCTC), a group focused on preparing students for higher education and the workforce.…

Farmers Pack Up Rifles for the Season

When Molokai’s history-making air riflery season came to an end, the Farmers were exactly where they wanted to be: at the state championship on Oahu. The MIL-champion Farmers shot their final competition last Tuesday, with the boys’ team coming in fifth out of seven boys’ teams and individual girls’ shooter Hi`ilani Kanuha finishing 50th in a field of 60.

“It was an eye opener and so much fun for the kids,” said girls’ coach Chinky Hubbard, who attended the state competition for the first time as a coach. “… We went over there and just tried to beat our scores that we performed at MILs.”…

Molokai Represented by Four Runners at States

Last year, cross country runner Luke Kikukawa was Molokai’s only representative at the state cross country championships, but this season, he didn’t have to go alone.  He and four other teammates qualified for states, and four total Farmers ran at the event last Saturday.

“It gave me a lot more confidence,” said Kikukawa. “During the lineup I had three people with me instead of just [being] by myself. It was a lot less intimidating.”

Joining Kikukawa were Keaolono Ross, Markis-Grayson Aldridge and Kaina Adolpho. This year’s championship featured 199 girls and 199 boys from across the state. Ross was the top Farmer finisher at 67th place overall.…

‘Lightning Strikes Twice’

Two Molokai High seniors got a quite a surprise two weeks ago. Little did Sarah Jenkins and Luke Kikukawa know that as they were sitting in their respective classes, a top secret mission was underway.

Sneaking through the halls of Molokai High with two giant, four-foot $10,000 checks, MHS Principal Stan Hao, Nordstrom Ala Moana Store Manager Brian Tatsumura, and other representatives and faculty stopped in front of two classrooms. They were preparing to make a big announcement: Jenkins and Kikukawa had each won a hefty check from the Nordstrom Scholarship Program.

“It’s sort of like a SWAT Team conducting maneuvers to take their opponent by stratagem in secret,” said Hao of the surprise operation.…

Students Rock College and Career Readiness

This coming Thursday, Oct. 30, 14 Molokai High School students want to thank their many donors and community members who helped the students make a recent life-changing trip to the East Coast. The students will share their New York City experiences in college and career readiness at the MHS Library at 6 p.m. They will recount surviving rush-hour subways and negotiating crowded NYC sidewalks with thousands of pedestrians.  They will also highlight their visit to Yale University and bonding with current Yale students.

The students will talk and share photos and videos of visits to the Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue, the 9/11 Memorial, Chinatown, the NYC Public Library, Columbia University, Barnard College, Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York University, Central Park, ABC Studios, Barclay Investment Bank, Citibank, Grand Central Station, Little Italy, and the West Village.…

Child & Family Service Celebrates New Office

When Child & Family Service (CFS) first arrived on Molokai in 2008, staff members worked with families in a one-room building in Kualapu`u, according to Nicole Hokoana, CFS’s Director of Maui County Programs. Six years later, CFS has a new, seven-room office on Kaunakakai’s main street, a fresh location for Hawaii’s oldest human service nonprofit.

“We’re all here because we have one thing in common: we love our children,” said Kahu Jimmy Duvauchelle, who came to help bless the new location last Friday. “We wanna give them nothing but the best.”

CFS, which helps families through serious issues that include domestic violence and sexual assault, went from the small building in Kualapu`u to a location next to Hometown Goods on Kaunakakai’s main street.…

Maunaloa and Kilohana Schools Among Best in State

Molokai has one of the smallest populations in the state, but that population is home to two of Hawaii’s best public elementary schools, according to a state-wide school performance program.

Based on scores from the 2013-14 school year, Maunaloa and Kilohana ranked within the top five percent of Hawaii public schools in the DOE’s Strive HI program, which reviews school performance through the four categories of achievement, student growth, readiness and gap rates. On Oct. 16, the Department of Education (DOE) recognized both schools with two $15,000 checks.

“To have two coming from Molokai, it’s a phenomenal accomplishment,” said Jessica Worchel, the DOE’s Special Assistant to the Superintendent.…

Bullying Awareness

Families Against Bullying (FAB) will be having their sign waving on Friday, Oct. 17 on the Molokai Public Library lawn.  We like to invite our community and youth to come to support us in spreading the word about bully awareness.

We ask for all participants to make their own signs and wear blue on that day which represents bullying awareness.  October is recognized as bully awareness/prevention month around the world, where communities come together and advocate about bullying.  Everyone is invited to participate on that day from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  Let’s make a difference as a community for our children.…

Waving a Message

Youth got together to share a message promoting healthy lifestyles last week. A sign waving in conjunction with National Recovery Month helped educate the Molokai community about mental or substance abuse disorders and the treatments available.

Hosted by Alu Like’s Hoala Hou program and the Ho`i Ho`i Leadership Group, the annual sign waving was held this year on Sept. 26. Ho`i Ho`i Leadership Group is comprised of eight middle and high school students who participate in weekly lessons, activities and service projects through Alu Like, according to Jana Sasada, program supervisor.

“Our Ho’i Ho’i Leadership Group plays a big role in organizing, planning and preparing all of our community activities and service projects,” said Sasada.  …

An International Affair

Kaunakakai Elementary hosted their first annual Cultural Night last Friday, complete with belly dancing and a balut eating contest, to showcase the cultural diversity within the community.  Parents and community members with many ethnic backgrounds from Fiji, Micronesia, Philippines, Russia, France, Mexico, Japan, Ireland, Turkey, and of course Hawaii, came together to expose students and their families to some of the cultures that make our community unique.

The goal of the evening was to educate and enrich the students by allowing them to “explore” other countries foods, traditions, and languages without even leaving the island, according to  coordinators of the event, Parent Community Network Center Coordinator Jennifer Whitted and Physical Education teacher U`i Kalani.…
