Upcoming 100K Bike Race in January

Kualapu`u School invites all local cycling enthusiasts to start getting ready for this year’s Molokai Metric events. To make transportation easier, 4 bike car racks can be a great solution for getting your gear to the event safely and securely. Two races are planned this year. In addition to the 100K ride, race organizers are staging an Uphill Prelim on the Kalae Highway. The Uphill Prelim is five miles in length climbing from Holomua Junction to Kalaupapa Lookout. This event opens the Martin Luther King weekend of activities. The Uphill race begins Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.…

Continuing Success for Robotics Teams

Molokai Middle School’s STEM Robotics Team 434 opened their 2015-2016 VEX IQ Robotics year, bringing home first, second and third place finishes in the first two tournaments of the season on Oahu and Maui.

On Sept. 5, Team 434K Kalo Farmers and Team 434M Menehune Farmers traveled to Island Pacific Academy in Kapolei, Oahu for the 2015 aio Aloha VEX IQ Tournament. After the qualifications round, Team Kalo Farmers was ranked sixth while Team Menehune Farmers was ranked eighth. Going into the finals round, the Kalo Farmers were partnered with fifth place Mililani Masters while the Menehune Farmers were partnered with seventh place Castle Knights.…

Though Molokai is a small community, we’re not immune from child abuse. Education is an important step in prevention. Parents, don’t be afraid to talk to your children about staying safe and healthy. Here is an activity to do with your children ages 5 to 10, but it can be discussed at any age.

Talk about grown-ups they trust. Have your child think of several trusted grown-ups, they are comfortable talking to. Along with your child, identify and draw pictures of three grown-ups who will help if they have a problem. It is important to make sure to communicate with these adults about their role as a trusted person.…

Action-Packed Weekend for Farmers

Molokai’s volleyball team traveled to Seabury last Friday with a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, who watched their team put on a strong defensive showing before the Farmers fell to the league leaders.

“Basically our defense was on it,” said Head Coach Mahea Rawlins. “Our back row was digging balls and at least making it playable, being on their toes and ready to dig anything.”

However, Rawlins credited the “well-rounded” Spartans, who beat Molokai 25-17, 25-18, 25-12 on Friday and 25-18, 25-9, 25-17 on Saturday.

After Friday’s loss, Rawlins said they tried to switch things up and place Molokai’s Sehja Pedro across from Seabury’s best outside hitter, which helped in several instances.…

Kulaia: One Community, One Wa`a

Last Friday on the closed main street of Kaunakakai town, children spoke Hawaiian fluidly. Community members pounded poi while shop owners told ancestral stories through their handmade crafts. Hawaiian culture was alive and well at Molokai’s second annual Kulaia, a celebration whose purpose was reconnecting with traditions of the past.

“I like the idea that it’s a historical event that we’re trying to revive in our own Molokai way,” said resident Pulama Lima. “… I think it brings our community together in a way that people look at us as this model of aloha and this model of why we still continue this life of subsistence.”…

Farmers Win 87-14, Stay Undefeated

The Molokai Farmers football team made a long road trip to Hana over the weekend and came out with an impressive 87-14 win. Molokai is now 3-0 in league play and 4-0 overall.

The Farmers’ offense and defense was firing on all cylinders in the first half and they went on to a convincing victory. The second and third string offense and defense all got quality reps during the second half. The halftime score was 60-7.

Farmer Football First to Stop Seabury

Last Saturday, Molokai’s football team did what no other school in the league had done before: defeat Seabury Hall. In three seasons of MIL eight-player football, the Spartans had yet to lose a game. However, on their home field last Saturday, the Farmers topped their undefeated archrivals 62-7.

“I’m just proud of the boys,” said Head Coach Mike Kahale. “We executed, put up some points. We finally got over that hump.”

Molokai dominated the game from the beginning in front of a big crowd, with Seabury only scoring on a long touchdown run late in the second quarter.

The Farmers started the scoring in the first quarter with a short run by senior fullback Ena Victorino from inside the 10-yard-line.…

Winning Weekend for Farmers

Nobody, it seemed, could beat the Farmers last week. Every Molokai team tasted victory as girls’ volleyball won twice on Maui, air riflery shot first place finishes in The Barn and football broke Seabury’s 18-game winning streak at home.

Last Thursday, the boys’ and girls’ air riflery teams competed in their second postal meet of the season, in which schools shoot separately in their home gyms and submit their targets to the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL).

The boys’ air riflery team finished in first place and claimed the top three individual spots. Joshaviah Cabreros had 263 points, Cody Nip shot 260 and Jershon Kaalekahi was close behind with 258.…

Molokai Selected for Middle School Enrichment Program

Molokai Middle School is among 14 middle and intermediate schools around the state selected to participate in the R.E.A.C.H. (Resources for Enrichment, Arts, Culture and Health) Initiative for the 2015-2016 school year.

R.E.A.C.H.’s mission is to ensure all public school students in grades six to eight receive the academic and community-based support they need to stay on track toward high school graduation by engaging them in a broad-base of programs and activities, outside of regular instructional hours, in the areas of academic enrichment, arts and culture, and athletics.

The initiative, spearheaded by Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui in collaboration with state Department of Education (DOE) Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi, provides an organizational framework for public middle and intermediate schools to offer students expanded learning opportunities during after-school hours.…

Students Awarded $16K for Science and Education

Molokai students took top honors at the Maui Economic Development Board’s (MEDB) Ke Alahele Education Fund Benefit Dinner and Auction last month. The event raised $309,000 to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects in Maui County and throughout the state, and recognized students for their accomplishments in the field with the presentation of the Daniel K. Inouye Innovation Award.

The MEDB Ke Alahele Education Fund earmarked $10,000 for this year’s winners, and the Daniel K. Inouye Institute matched the award with an additional $10,000. The first place winner received $10,000, second place $6,000, and third place $4,000.…
