Celebration Through Donation

For 80 years, Molokai Drugs has doled out over-the-counter remedies to thousands of island residents. This year, however, the island’s only pharmacy is tending to the health of a unique customer: Molokai High’s ailing fleet of school buses.

To celebrate their milestone anniversary, the owners of Molokai Drugs donated a new 14-passenger bus to the high school, which spent nearly $15,000 last year in bus repairs alone.

The brand-new vehicle, which will be used on Maui, is a start to replacing a collection of buses that over the years have cost the school thousands of dollars, delayed numerous trips and limited the number of students and equipment that teams can take off island.…

Help keiki to notice the many things around us that we can be thankful for: family and friends, a healthy body, a place to live, food for our table, the beautiful sky and ocean, and so much more. Jordan Boswell, a senior at Molokai High School, comes from a third generation homestead farming family from Ho`olehua. His parents are Ui and Aaron Boswell, of Ho`olehua.

As a student in Ms. Harada’s senior class, he chose a career where money was the motivating factor. He decided on becoming an orthopedic surgeon, and he had begun his journey! As Jordan began his research on the education required and the cost for that education, he knew this was no longer about the money, rather it was about serving others.

“As a child growing up I always gave service, through my scouting activities and through church service projects,” he reflected.…

Services for Those with Disabilities

On Nov. 12, the Molokai Community Children’s Council (CCC) put on a workshop regarding data keeping and the importance of data keeping for individuals with disabilities. The speakers were Verna Waikiki for Hawaii Disability Rights Center and Yolanda Tanielu, Parent Co-Chair of Molokai CCC. Yolanda has received state wide recognition for her program of data keeping based on her child with exceptions needs and spoke at the State Planning Proposal meeting several years ago. Look up ADA attorney near me online if you need help accessing your disability benefits or if you’re experiencing any form of discrimination.

Dawn Mains, principal of Molokai Middle School, was critical to the success of this Department of Education (DOE) driven presentation exemplifying the role of DOE and community agencies bonding together to better serve students and their families.…

Little League Throws First Pitch

The Molokai Little League had their opening ceremonies last Saturday for their T-ball and coach pitch leagues. Games will be played during the week at 4 p.m. and on Saturdays at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. until mid-December.

There are eight teams this year: the Ho’olehua Cubs, Kaunakakai Giants and Kaunakakai Angels have both T-ball and coach pitch teams. The Maunaloa Tigers and Kaunakakai Mets only have only T-ball teams. The League president is Pinky Gaspar and vice president is Briann Starkey.

Molokai Joins in Christmas Donation

This month, Molokai Baptist Church will serve as a Molokai collection site for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual Samaritan’s Purse project is a favorite of many Molokai residents, families, churches and groups who spread joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

$88K for Cultural and Environmental Education

Molokai Middle School, `O Hina I Ka Malama, Ke Kula Waena, Hawaiian Language Immersion Program received a $88,213 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a project titled “Promoting Cultural Based Knowledge and Practices through Environmental Stewardship and Preservation.” The grant’s duration, August 2015 through August 2016, is being lead by Molokai Middle School Hawaiian Language Immersion Program Teacher and Principal Investigator, `Iolani Ku`oha.

“Our goal, through meaningful science-based outdoor experiences for students, is to instill the need for engaging in culture based knowledge that reflects community efforts on Molokai,” said Ku`oha. “In addition, we hope that increased science investigations that are relevant to students will help to increase their achievement on the Hawaii State Science Assessment.”…

In conjunction with the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Kapi`olani Women and Children Hospital, the Molokai Child Abuse Prevention Pathways wants to encourage everyone to be an advocate for respect.

Respect means to show regard or consideration for the following situations.

Sexual Violence is non-discriminatory, it happens to anyone of any age, sexual preference, social/economic class, it does not care who you are. However, friends and family members can have an open discussion about the respectful ways to respond to someone who discloses sexual abuse.

Here are reminders to go by that are respectful:

Believe the victim Remind and encourage the “victim” that it is not his/her fault Encourage the victim that there is help available when they are ready

Kids, always remember if a friend or family member is in serious danger, tell a trusted adult as soon as possible.…

Molokai Holds Hawai’s First Ever Robotics League

On Saturday, Oct. 24, STEM Robotics was proud to host the first Robotics League competition to ever take place in the State of Hawaii right here on Molokai. The Molokai VEX IQ League was hosted at Molokai Middle School with robotics teams from Molokai Middle (MMS), Akaula, Kaunakakai Elementary, and Kilohana Elementary.

Eleven on-island teams from Molokai schools attended the event. Molokai Middle had three teams that included last year’s State Champs Menehune Farmers and Kalo Farmers, with a newly added third team Na`iwa Warriors. Akaula had two teams, an elementary team Voyager 1 and a middle-school team Voyager 2.…

Maui Realtors Send Gifts for Molokai Schools

Students of five Molokai schools are sitting pretty and cool after a cooperative effort spearheaded by the Realtors Wishing Well program. Last month a shipping container full of resort furniture, supplies and new fans arrived at Kaunakakai Harbor thanks to the Realtors Association of Maui Community Foundation and kokua from other Maui residents.

According to Foundation’s founder and director, Sarah Sorenson, the Molokai initiative began in March when she was contacted by Randall Nelson, general contractor and site supervisor for Elements of Hospitality who was overseeing the renovation of the WorldMark Wyndham Resort in Kihei.…
