Little League Honors ‘The Professor’

The Molokai Little League is hosting the District III 9-10 Minors tournament at Kaunakakai Ballpark. At the opening ceremonies last Saturday, a Molokai resident was honored for his 59 years of involvement in Little League as coach, umpire, scorekeeper and PA announcer at the local, district and state levels.

Filemon “David” Nanod was given the Little League’s Volunteer Award for his years of dedication. Known as “The Professor” of Molokai Little League Baseball, the 92-year-old is  also a Molokai National Guard veteran.

Many special people were on hand to celebrate and talk about Nanod, including Senator Kalani English, Representative Lynn DeCoite and Councilwoman Stacy Helm Crivello.…

Youth Show Work of Head, Heart, Hands and Health

 

Showmanship, public speaking, animal husbandry and responsibility are all skills and qualities instilled in youth through participation in Molokai’s annual 4-H Expo. Held last Friday and Saturday at Kaunakakai Ball Park, the two-day event was the culmination of months of animal care and gave young participants the opportunity to showcase their hard work.

From ducks to pigs, goats and steer, youth raised, fed and trained their animals, and younger 4-H-ers had their small animals on display while older participants competed in market and showmanship categories in the ring. They were judged on control over their animal, eye contact with the judge, knowledge of animal care and processing and the size and proportions of their goats, steer or pigs.…

Youth Symphony Comes to Molokai

The classrooms of Kaunakakai Elementary School on Molokai will be filled with the joy of music during the Hawaii Youth Symphony’s string workshop held at the school on Saturday, June 23 through Sunday, June 24. 

“The Hawaii Youth Symphony is thrilled to share more of the opportunities and wonder that music education has to offer with students on Molokai,” said Randy Wong, president of the Hawaii Youth Symphony. “Music is a right, not a privilege, and we look forward to inspiring these enthusiastic young students to further develop their skills and have fun while learning.” 

In partnership with Kaunakakai Elementary School teacher and bassist Bob Underwood, the Hawaii Youth Symphony will teach Molokai students the fundamental techniques of string instruments, general musicianship skills and the opportunity to rehearse as an orchestra. …

Nainoa Kahale Receives Kaimana Award

 

Molokai High student athlete and graduating senior Nainoa Kahale was one of 16 chosen statewide to receive HMSA’s Kaimana Award. The HMSA Kaimana Awards and Scholarship Program honors high school seniors and their schools for excellence in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities and sportsmanship. Each awardee receives up to $5,000 that can be used to pay for college tuition, books, computers, and room and board.

Kahale was a year-round athlete all four years of high school. He was on the volleyball, cross country, football and basketball teams, and served as basketball senior captain. Along with competing, Kahale took AP and honor courses, as well as a college class, all while maintaining a 3.857 GPA.…

Football Summer Camp

 

Three student-athletes from the Molokai High School Football team attended the prestigious GPA Showcase Football camp at the UH campus June 5-6. Clancey Wright Jr., Kaimana Nakayama and Tofi Ah Van all participated and were coach by Rich Miano, Jesse Sapolu and Ma’a Tanuvasa. Athletes learn skills and college coaches run the sessions and clinics.  Athletes also build position specific skills and coaches get to see talent and potentially recruit up and coming athletes. Clancey placed in the top three for Defensive Lineman at the camp.

Molokai Head Coach Mike Kahale said the camp is a good one for our athletes.…

Young Cowboy to Compete Nationally

 

Molokai seventh grader Kahiwa Augustiro will be taking his rodeo skills on the road this summer. Kahiwa is among 10 in the state who earned spots in the 14th annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo, set for June 24-30 in Huron, South Dakota. They earned spots on the Hawaii team with their performances at the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association Junior State Finals, held on May 11-12 at Haleakala Ranch and Kaonoulu Ranch on Maui.

Only the top four in each event can advance to nationals. Kahiwa will be competing in the breakaway roping, chute dogging, team roping, ribbon roping, steer bareback bronc riding and bull riding.…

Schonely Awarded for Sports Reporting

 

The Molokai Dispatch’s sports reporter Rick Schonely was awarded by Molokai High School for his collaboration efforts with the school and highlighting student athlete accomplishments. Schonely was among a handful of community members and organizations honored with the school’s No Ka Heke award at a luncheon last week.

“Molokai High School acknowledges the contributions and collaboration efforts of our community partners in conveying the school’s vision and mission,” reads the award. “This award is given to our community partners who exemplify ‘No Ka Heke’ spirit of being ‘Molokai Mo Better.'”

Schonely writes weekly sports stories in The Molokai Dispatch, films Sports Report videos on social media, and sometimes even accompanies teams to off-island sporting events.…

Celebrating the Class of 2018

 

Nearly half of this year’s Class of 2018 graduated from Molokai High School with college credits under their belt. This and many other achievements were celebrated last Friday evening by the 85 graduating seniors along with their families, friends, teachers, community members and dignitaries.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard joined the celebration, offering words of wisdom in her opening address.

“The details of every step along your future path are actually less important than answering the one very important question, which is, ‘What is your ‘why?’ What is your purpose? What is your motivation?’ she told the seniors. “Understanding your own personal answer to that is critical.”…

Sports Year Wraps Up with Banquet

 

The accomplishments of this year’s Molokai High School student athletes were honored by the Athletic Department at their annual Athletic Recognition Banquet last Wednesday night at the MHS Cafeteria. After a nice roast pork dinner, served by Mikes Catering, all our student athletes and coaches were recognized by Athletic Director Lee DeRouin and his staff. The evening started off with the Parade of Athletes, in which all classes were recognized and athletes were introduced.

In a separate event earlier last week on Maui, eight Molokai student athletes were honored among this year’s Sports Spotlight Student Athletes, a program sponsored by Alexander and Baldwin.…

Keiki Fest with a Cause

 

Molokai’s first Keiki Fest brought a crowd to Mitchell Pauole Center last Saturday for games, food, educational booths and services. It also raised awareness for a special cause. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and organizers of the first annual event — who wore blue in honor of the nationally recognized month — said the festival’s goal is to both celebrate keiki and raise awareness of the cause.

“We’re trying to take away the negative [connotations of prevention] and bring the positive,” said Tylor Tanaka, one of 12 members of the Community Action Team that organized Keiki Fest.

Tanaka said the event drew even more attendance than expected and its success will help them plan for an even bigger event next year.…
