Fall Sports Come to a Close

The past week marked the end of the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) season for Molokai Farmers fall sports. Girls Volleyball, Cross Country and Air Riflery all competed at their MIL Championships on Maui, and some athletes will be headed to the state level. 

The Lady Farmers Volleyball team traveled to the MIL Division II tournament hosted at Maui Preparatory Academy. The quarterfinal game was a match between Maui Prep Pueos and Molokai High Farmers. The first two sets were won by the Pueos, 25-17 and 25-20. The Lady Farmers came back in set three, 18-25. The fourth set was stolen back by the Pueos, 25-15, leaving Molokai to finish their season with a 4-9 record. …

Kilohana Elementary School is a Project Based Learning School and we encourage learners to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, and extend our thinking beyond the classroom. In answering the question, “How can we share our learning with our friends, families and our community?” first graders at Kilohana will share their understanding with our community in the Dispatch. 

Oct. 19 is Unity Day.  We began a focused campaign to prevent bullying and demonstrate kindness to all. In first grade, we have been learning about verbs, which we used in our writing about unity. Our prompt was, “Aloha in action creates unity.”…

Celebrating Seniors and Farmer Pride

Last Saturday, Farmer fans and family parked their cars overlooking the football field at Molokai High School to cheer on Molokai High’s football and cheerleading seniors who have worked their way to the senior game. 

According to Head Football Coach Mike Kahale, in his senior celebration introduction, this year is Farmer Football’s largest group of seniors. These 18 student-athletes took the field for their last home game, challenging against Seabury Spartans in a game that closed with a landslide Molokai win of 57-7. 

Senior Dion Augustiro started the game off strong in the first quarter with a 27 yard touchdown and then a 86 yard touchdown in the third quarter.…

Wrestling Club is Ready to Rumble

A determined group of young Molokai athletes have been invited to take their wrestling skills to a bigger mat. After proving themselves during this summer’s wrestling tournaments on Oahu and Maui, the Molokai Wrestling club has set its sights on upcoming tournaments in Utah and Las Vegas.  

Founded just this past May, the team has grown impressively in size and stature. From its original group of five girls, it has expanded to encompass more than 30 girls and boys ages 5 and up. Led by Coach Justin Luafalemana, the team prides itself on the hard work of its members and supporters. …

Teen Donates Children’s Books to Molokai Head Start Keiki

A West Virginia high school senior reached across the mainland and the Pacific to Kaunakakai to hand 20 Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Head Start children the classic book “If You Give a Mouse A Cookie” on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

The books were given to all 20 students in the Head Start program by Rania Zuri of Morgantown and her Fifty Nifty Head Start book donation project, part of the LiTEArary Society, her nonprofit whose mission is to end book deserts for children in Head Start programs nationwide.

Also, early childhood education plays a pivotal role in shaping a child’s development, making programs like Head Start and daycare centers essential in laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.…
