For Molokai High School (MHS) Junior Shazen Bush, cooking became an interest when a friend needed help at their food truck. Marcus Hubbard starting cooking at home, making meals with his mother. Timika McLaurin also found herself inspired by family members creating meals. Last week, all three students and 10 of their MHS Culinary Club classmates found themselves at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui, shadowing cooks and learning about what a life in the kitchen could really look like.

Eager for Easter

Hundreds of keiki lined the fields at Kaunakakai Elementary School last Sunday morning, ushering in the Easter season. Before them, 8,000 plastic eggs awaited. In a matter of seconds, it was all over. Pouring in from all sides, keiki filled their baskets in pursuit of the golden egg. This egg hunt was hosted by King’s Chapel Molokai. …

Hokulani Children’s Theatre of Molokai proudly offers our first ever community performance!  The “Legend of Mulan” features the efforts of 22 Molokai keiki on Friday, April 14 at  6.p.m and Saturday, April 15 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Home Pumehana Recreational Hall.  

Performances are free — we do not want any child to miss this opportunity for wholesome family entertainment.  For those who are able, donations are gladly accepted to support our scholarship program for interns and future program offerings to develop performing art skills for our island children.  There will be a drink and snack concession available for purchase.…

Anti-Vaping Campaign Youth Contest

The deadline for ‘Imi Pono: The Greatest Challenge, which this year calls on high school and intermediate youth to develop an anti-vaping media campaign, has been extended to April 20.

The prize money for the top three places in the high school and intermediate divisions also have increased. The first place prize in each division has grown to $1,000; second place to $750; and third place to $500.

The contest is open to youth in public, private and home school on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Campaigns must include three components: a slogan, a poster/brochure and a short public service announcement video.…

Molokai Robotics: A Legacy of Learning

Preparing for their regional competition on Oahu, Molokai High School robotics students spent their spring break practicing the delicate art of maneuvering blocks onto three levels using a robot they designed, built and programmed over the past several months. In the competition, they form alliances with teams from around the world, with a dozen other students and their robots all competing to perform the same tasks on a basketball-court-sized competition field. It’s a high-tech, high-pressure activity that costs thousands of dollars just to enter.

In Kilohana School’s first grade class, one of our students had a loss of a family pet and he was grieving. I took the opportunity to talk a little bit about loss and grief with them. At the end of our conversation, I asked them to think of an animal or a person or even an experience where they had grief or loss, to close their eyes until they had a memory in their heart that made them smile when they thought about it. And this beautiful poem is the result, a composite written by all my students and myself. …

MHS Robot Takes the Spotlight

The Molokai High School robotics team has built a masterpiece over the past several months – and they’re gearing up to compete with it this week at 2023 FIRST Robotics Hawaii Regional on Oahu, where they will be facing off against other teams from Hawaii, the continental U.S. as well as China, Japan, Singapore and Indonesia. Between March 23-25, the team will be showcasing their robot’s abilities to complete tasks like moving and placing cones and cubes, as well as the months of work they’ve put into designing, building, programming, practicing and overcoming obstacles with creativity and limited resources.…

Wins For Baseball and Softball

The Molokai Farmers took on rivals Lanai Pinelads in a baseball double-header last weekend in Kaunakakai. 

Friday afternoon’s game saw the Farmers post a 14-4 victory, which ended in the fourth inning due to Maui Interscholastic League’s 10-run rule. 

Led by a strong pitching performance from Solomon Kikukawa-Teriong, which included three scoreless innings, the Farmers took a six-run lead in the first inning and never let up. While the Lanai Pinelads closed the gap to four runs, Molokai was able to put up an additional six runs, securing the win. 

Molokai’s offense was bolstered by strong performances from Hokuau Arce and Miken Loo, both of whom hit triples.…

Kilohana School first graders discussed ‘Auamo Kuleana. “I can carry a burden/responsibilities and still move forward to a goal.” It is a privilege to have this responsibility. It is important to remember that just because a person ‘auamo kuleana well, with a smile, it doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy. Here is what the class shared.

Molokai Robotics Earn Statewide Awards

Hawaii Space Grant Consortium News Release 

Molokai High School was one of 50 Hawaii VEX robotics teams that competed at the Hawaii VEX Robotics Middle and High School State Championships, held on February 19-20 at Kamehameha Schools – Kapālama, sponsored by Hawaiian Electric. Eight of the 50 teams will advance to the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championships.

Though Molokai did not qualify for worlds, a Molokai team captured the Robot Skills second Place Award and Energy Award at the Middle School Championship, and a second Molokai High team took the Sportsmanship Award at the High School Championship. 

Hawaii middle and high school robotics teams will showcase their game strategy, design and teamwork skills for an opportunity to be crowned world champions at the global event to be held April 25 to May 4 in Dallas, Texas.…
